Well, nobody is forced to be in Florida or anywhere else. My living room is slightly more than 6,300 feet above sea level. We do have problems in Colorado, but none of them involve hurricanes. search recall marker
Yup, and you've gotta make sure all your power equipment is ready to roll before the storm hits. The aftermath of a storm is not the time to find out your chainsaw doesn't want to run because you didn't stay on top of its maintenance.
We own a generator, but it's not because we live by the water, but your point will be well taken by those in FL. who don't have one ready to help. They are a godsend. S. CA. has periodic power outages during very hot weather, like we're having today. High of 98. Heat wave breaking today, but I digress, and even during fire weather where there is an abundance of hot, dry winds, they'll turn the power off on us. The power companies don't want to get blamed or sued for their lines breaking and sparking a fire. Lovely place to live, but it is trying at times.
Wow... 98-degrees at nearly the tip-end of September! There was a point when a prime-contractor I was working for came very close to transferring me to San Diego (which I really welcomed), but, all in all, I'm glad I stayed in Colorado. We have problems up here, mostly related to drought and the danger of wildfires, plus smoke from fires in Arizona, New Mexico, California, etc. when the wind blows that stuff in here, but it's better up here at altitude than in many areas. I might mention, that in the area from about Pueblo, Colorado on up to Cheyenne, Wyoming, we haven't had a "hard, snowy winter" since the beginning of the 21st-century... but, man, it is DRY!
Well... if I had spent thousands on a generator, I'd be very damned careful to SITE the thing somewhere that it would not be submerged in flooding. And, I suppose the corollary to that is, I wouldn't buy a home anywhere that was in any kind of a FLOOD PLAIN in the first place!
There are very few places to live where you don’t have to deal with any natural earth processes that mess up our lives.
Couldn’t resist going political as boatloads of millionaires just lost their home. The suffering will be massive. Way to show your colors.
Huh? We help everyone during times of disaster, wouldn’t it be nice if they helped us? Kuwait and the Saudis benefitted from us, so did Pakistan. China, if you can believe it, gets plenty of our money, just ask Fauci. We defend Europe and the pacific rim jobs, too. And how much do we give to central and South America? Yes, they can help and they have no problem taking ours.
Did you see where Joy Reid compared the people evacuating Florida to illegals? How about the people blaming this on global warming? And already DeSantis is being blasted by the liberal media. What we’re you saying about true colors?
If you lose your house, do you expect the single mother of two, working two jobs, to bail you out? OMFG… foreign aid HELPS us.
The GW people are idiots. Evacuation is super smart if you have to hide from the surge, and is completely unrelated to your status in the US. DeSantis is doing fine on this. His commercials against democrats during election season half been about 50% true. It’s ELECTION season. Everyone uses everything to campaign. If this hurricane happens next year, it gets way less attention and resources. History backs this up. It’s not party specific.
OMFG….You’re answering a question I didn’t ask. Should countries we supported over the years give us some help now that they’re successful? Look at the countries I listed, look at how much of our blood and money went to them and then look to see if they can afford to help. They can and why shouldn’t they?
Ima pretty sure that if you asked for help, you'd get it, including from Down Here. 'Ol @FatBack has gone off the air. Hope he is well.
Being able to walk out my backyard and stroll the beach is worth the once in a lifetime hurricane concern.
There is absolutely no cell service at the moment for him, and probably won't be for some time. Pictures look bad. Hoping he is OK as well, but we probably will not hear from him for days, in any case.
Facts are Facts, the United States is always at the front of the line to help other countries and give them $ BILLIONS of US Tax dollars, but when it comes time for them to return the favor, they're surprisingly absent. They're usually the ones who bite the hand that feeds it.
6300 feet? Dang! That's almost half way up Pikes Peak. That lack of oxygen would take some getting used to for those of us who spend most of our lives under 1000 feet. I'd love to go to Pikes Peak again.
