We are ALL just as responsible for the slavery of 200 years ago. (Meaning not at all, we're all Americans and all just as responsible for America's past, black or white, as we are all Americans)

why? It was legal back then. Why the hell should slave owners have been punished for following the law just because we find it morally reprehensible? That’s not Justice. That’s just revenge.

we don’t make something illegal and then punish people for having committed an illegal act during a time before it was made illegal. That’s ridiculous.

In point of fact, the slave owners should have been compensated for their property being taken from them and set free.

As for the slaves, all attention and resources needed to integrate them into society should have been provided, including land and money, but only for that aforementioned purpose, not to compensate for any suffering. You go down the victimhood suffering road it’ll never end and doesn’t do them a lick of good in becoming functional members of society.

look at black people now, not a one of em has ever been a slave but that doesn’t keep them from galloping down that road and becoming ever more useless and toxic to this country and themselves while they wait for their freebies.

After WW2 there was a very popular move to pay reparations to Jews who had been stripped of everything...family, property, liberty, self determination, health etc.
In many ways the reparation was a recognition of the state of Israel.
It was giving Jews all the freedoms to develop as a victim of targeted hatred, as they wanted. It tried to restore all those things that had made them even worse than slaves...the objects of calculated extermination. And the hesitation of the rest of the west to offer asylum orher than to children through organisations such as the Red Cross, not through state aid.
Today there is still a programme of reparation but it is confined to those who can prove that their own experience is still damaging their quality of life (sic) . You can find the details by googling Jewish reparations.
This would presumably include those who still suffer permanent health issues. I cant think of many other categories.

IMO is is impossible to offer personal reparations to the families of past slaves. There are few nations that didn't misuse some part of their population at some point.
However I do think that if the abuse was within living experience, the victims should be recognised and compensated.
That anything stolen should be returned.
That memorials to them should be made, for they also suffered as did official soldiers who died for their cause.
That laws be passed to stop further lies told against them.
And that they should always be treated equally and fairly in all respects.

Unfortunately the latter is not always the case.
