I planted some grapes, raspberries and currants for my ex some years ago. She left, and I dont tend them anymore except to tuck their vines back into their boxes before I mow. I cut some leftover concrete fiberboard siding into plates to cover their beds to minimize weeds, but other that they're basically 'wild' now. Most of their fruit is left to rot (and presumably re-fertilize them) because its way more than I can eat. I plan to make wine, but I have taken no action as of yet to do so.
It's time for me to put everything indoors. But it's also time for me to get my Christmas tree. I get a little pine tree for my apartment, then I plant it outside in the spring. It's my favorite Christmas tradition.
My beds are tucked in for the winter, but the veggie garden is almost completely enclosed. Just a backscrape with the bobcat, a load or two of gravel, a couple of lower raised beds, and we should be ready to finish the gate. This is the raised beds from two years ago, when we had just started with the new garden.
In the winter mode... enclosed, with mini-green house and some more lower beds. Tomatoes in raised beds can be a bit of a trick when they are indeterminate in height. Seed catalogues will start coming in another month or so.
Everything is closed up for winter. Our gardening season starts soon. Almost time for early spring planting.
About 3 weeks away for us but I have already planted some green onions and radishes that are coming up. Potatoes in the ground under a thick layer of grass clippings so hopefully that'll keep them insulated should it freeze too much or long. Garlic and walking onions already up. Growing horseradish for the first time, but doing it in pots. Plants a couple feet tall and starting to flower some. Moved them on the front porch under roof to protect them from the recent brief dips back into the upper 20's. Have some things started indoors but they aren't ready size to plant out yet which is good. Fruit trees got hit with frost but they had been in bloom about a week so hopefully I will get some peaches and plums off them this year.
Snow in April! - The garden is under snow! For some this may be nothing special, but here it is. Snow on the daffodils and on the camelia japonica. Snow is always something special here. What about the region where you live? Btw: Let's talk about real snow - not about some drugs etc.
What is this "snow" you speak of? A low of about 70 here tonight and the high will be around 90. Southwest Florida.
Early Spring crops are ready for their bed, and the new row cover has been cut to size. The old row cover had more holes then 'cover', but it did last about 5 years. Hummer feeders are up, they should be coming around in the next week or so. I've seen a number of Carpenter Bees, wasps and other warm weather insects already, but we are scheduled for some nippy mornings yet.
I am experimenting with hydrangeas under lights. I hope to see them bloom come spring. I have also started about 4,500 creeping phlox cuttings. It seems to be working. I have set out a lot of creeping phlox and have about 300 to go.
