The EU is modelled on the US system? How's that? In the EU, some folks in Brussels set the policies and rules for folks in France, Germany and the rest. In the USA, only Americans set policies and rules. The "models'" are decidedly different.
That is how it was designed to be. Its an economic union, nothing else. Open borders (literally) within the union makes movement of people and goods much easier and trade is free. It also created the world’s largest single market area. A citizen of any member country can work in any other member country without permits. As for Poland, they need EU far more than EU needs them. As a matter of fact, one big reason for Brexit was the massive number of Poles who moved to UK for better quality of life. Its not modeled on the US system. Every EU member has their own Constitutions, militaries, languages and budgets. US is modeled after the Swiss system. Since most EU members use the Euro, they are not able to print their money, which is actually a good thing.
No it wouldn't be similar to the states. The EU are dictators. The people don't vote for them. I hope they fall apart. Basically it's Germany up to is old tricks
...to be frank the average Brit would vote for anyone or anything that gave them more money which was what the leave folks were saying....didn't work out but hey...it was a good yarn at the time! The EU revolves around the French making up policy on the run and expecting the Belgians to agree with them, the Italians to moan about it and the Germans to pay for it...to be honest it's time that the EU disappears....it's like every organisation, the more members it has, the more arguments it can stir up, the more futile and impotent it becomes. Which I suppose was why I voted to get out...the Secretariat had reached the point of uselessness....
The EU is very similar to the US system. The countries operate like a US state. Members of the EU parliament are voted in by the countries they represent in much the same way that US states vote to have their representatives in US government. Each EU country can set their own laws in much the same way that US States have their own individual laws. Yes, EU countries cannot print their own money which is the same as any US state cannot print their own money. Open EU borders just like open US state borders. Practically everyone in the EU speaks English as a second language. There are talks of an EU military. Each US states also have their own written constitution. Each US state has a budget. Some US states rely on aid from central government in much the same way that some EU countries relied on low interest loans such as when Greece went effectively bankrupt but rescued by the EU
Which means that if you live in the UK, folks other than Brits are making your policies and rules. Not everyone in Brussels was elected by British citizens.
EU is not a federation and does not have a Constitution, and hence not modeled after the US. EU does not have a federal budget, or federal taxes, or military. Its not a country. Period.
we all have an MEP (Member of the European Parliament) we vote for them every 4 years I think it is?? Nobody votes though...turnout is practically zero...I couldn't tell you who our local MEP is or which party he's from..in fact I'd hazard that 99% of Brits don't have a clue who their MEP is! Anyway all these anonymous MEPs disappear off Brussels and boy do they make crapton of money doing...well....not very much. So you have all these MEPs....basically a loose confederation of squabbling children dashing around making themselves look useful. Anyway... its the squabbling children that then vote for the secretariate...I mean can you imagine the amount of money this all costs just for the administration....what it means is that in the UK for example we have layer upon layer of useless administration...we have parish council....town/city/unitary council...county council...regional government then national government and then European government....
..it's kind of based on the Kantian theory of Cosmpolitanism....you know common laws...common trade....no borders (don't look too closely at that!!)...common ideals.....all that sort of stuff....
Brits would eagerly welcome being re-admitted, but the example of brexit insures that no other member wants to leave. Britons who want to rejoin EU at highest levels since 2016 In hindsight, do you think Britain was right or wrong to vote to leave the European Union?(January 2020 to February 2024) https://www.statista.com/statistics/987347/brexit-opinion-poll/
sort of....it's like when you join the club you're expected to follow the club rules....French don't...they do what the hell they like...German does what it wants as it pays for everyone else....Italy does what's told as it needs the money and that's pretty much how it works...if you don't follow the rules then you get hauled in front of the European Court and get slapped on the wrist or fined...the French tend to get fined but never pay....I mean France is bankrupt anyway so how can they pay!! That's the reason for the EU by the way...the French farming system was so madly bazaar and whacky and inefficient and the French pension and social security system equally mad and equally unaffordable so they needed someone else to pay for it...the Germans where on a massive guilt trip for causing so much mayhem in Europe that they basically would have agreed to anything...thus the EU...France being bankrolled by Germans....
well...us Brits can want what we want.....it isn't going to happen...that donkey has hobbled off down the paddock and gasped it's final breath....
Nope. They talked about it, but the idea was defeated since it didn't make sense. EU is not a country. They have Treaty of Lisbon, which is not a Constitution aka "supreme law of the land".
The Treaties of the European Union are a set of international treaties between the European Union (EU) member states which sets out the EU's constitutional basis. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Treaties_of_the_European_Union
maybe....but I have a feeling that the EU is in for a hard time...thing is the Secretariate has never been stress tested...you have Orban making a complete c**t of himself...Italy trying to dig up the remains of Mussolini....and Germany getting itself in all sorts of a mess over Ukraine and France..well...France is France.......will it go far right....will it implode? Lot's of stressy times coming for the EU and to be frank....well do they actually have the talent to navigate the waters? There's so many conflicting interests within that confederation of disparate states...what will there be for the young better ejukat'ed Brits to get to grips with....
The EU have two headquarters, one in Brussels and one in Strasbourg, and once a month they move everything from one location to the other at a cost of 114 million euros a year. Add to this that they have over 79,000 people on the payroll. There's EU bureaucracy and waste for you. https://euemployment.eu/european-commission-employee-number/
aye...and that doesn't even scratch the surface....we had a Welsh husband and wife team - one finished up a commissioner the other just an MEP...they were just 3rd rate Welsh politicians....Neil Kinnock was a failed PM contender for the Labour party back in the 1980s I think it was...? anyway his nickname was the Welsh windbag, him and his wife Glenys Kinnock became millionaires out of their time in the EU...
I agree. So much money wasted. My main moan though is that Farage continued taking out £300,000 a year including perks and other "expenses" even after Brexit and he refused to attend anyway and probably will draw a pension from the EU. The Kinnocks were almost as bad. The idea behind the EU is fine, the high salaries and siphoning away of money is the problem
