Just curious...this issue comes up in threads on here all the time. So I'd like to get some actual opinions from straight people regarding their own control over their desires.

Do you believe that you personally could change what you are sexually attracted too merely by choosing to do so? Or do you think it is something Biologically or genetically inherent that you could not change even if you wanted to?

Since homosexuals in some areas of the world (most areas unfortunately) are so hated and discriminated against, why would one choose to be that way? Plus I know that science is coming closer to finding proof that homosexuality is not a choice. I doubt anyone who thinks it is can find any evidence of this that isn't in the form of religious preaching or mindless banter.

I have heard anti-homo people argue that it is because they want attention. Even negative attention.

Like I said, mindless banter and absolutely no empirical evidence, just stupid beliefs that are formed from ignorance.

I made this poll because a lot of straight people seem to think its a choice. Except that when asked if they could choose it for themselves, they say no. Just seems a little inconsistent to me.

It would depend on the person but I think generally most people are born either homosexual, heterosexual, or bisexual.

For the purposes of this poll, I wanted to limit it to the person responding only. That removes any ambiguity or need for proofs. You know your own body and mind better than anyone else does.

I have no idea what an identity trajectory is. So I am unable to answer that question.

Okay. When you were 5, did you have that moment when you "felt different from other boys" like it is common to hear gay people talk about? Did you wake up at 13 one day and realize that one of your friends was really hot? Did you decide to go to a gay bar with friends as a joke when you turned 21 and realized that you liked it? What have you noticed looking back on your life?

It didnt start with me till right before puberty, and I assume it was a "phase" that would pass. I finally accepted it around 18 or 19.

BTW - I set the poll to show who voted for what so that gays would not vote in it. So nobody can claim that the results are skewed.

Do you have indisputable evidence to the contrary?
Perhaps straight people argue against what is not how nature intended?
Just as we shouldn't act upon every instinct and urge, perhaps all of us should exercise a bit more self restraint.
Also, if I am not interested in every male that comes my way, does that mean I am attracted to females, just because I have more in common, and feel more comfortable, with my own gender?

I'm not mocking the thread, but I don't feel this is a relevant question.

If people want to be gay, whether it's an experimental phase or for attention-seeking, etc., I don't have a problem with that and feel that it is an individual's right. Although in the bigoted world we live in, I can't imagine someone wanting that associated oppression for themself if it wasn't their authentic orientation.

I also don't feel "natural" is limited to genes. If nurture influences our sexuality, that also is natural as it occurs in nature. Nurture also is difficult to change, but I don't see homosexuality as something that someone should desire to change.

I'm glad you didn't ask who played doctor behind the garage. Might bring up all kinds of psychological issues. :omg:

To the contrary of what? All the poll is asking for is an opinion. Therefore, evidence is irrelevant. Indisputable or otherwise.

Then why are they not actually saying that instead?

For what purpose? You do not restrain yourself in every aspect of your life...lots of men shave even though that is clearly unnatural for example. Lots of people have sex for reasons other than procreation.

It might. In order to find out we would need to catalog all the people you ARE sexually attracted to.

If you are a woman and they are all male, then it is reasonable to assume you are straight. If they are all female, then you are probably a bit lezzy. It isnt as difficult to find out as as it might seem.

Lots of straight people in other threads have made it a relevant question. They are claiming it is a choice. So I thought this would be a good way to find out for sure.

Thats what the poll is asking...if it is something you are capable of getting just because you want it.

So far the answer seems to be no (9 to zero as of this writing). Although I cant help but notice that you havnt voted. Unsure are you?

The poll is not asking you if you have a problem with it. Or whether or not you think its a right.

It doesnt have to be. It could be biological instead of genetic. Or a combination of both.

You wanted an opinion, but you don't really want it, but an affirmation.
You should therefor rather ask other homosexuals.:sun:

I have now voted. I didn't not because I'm unsure but because I do feel I could change if I wanted or if I fell in love with a woman. That doesn't mean that I believe people aren't born gay though. Plus, I like lesbian porn

I don't get why so many people think sexuality is binary (you're either gay or straight) rather than a spectrum. Practically nothing else in biology is binary. Why would this be?

It might be that the distribution isn't even, so that most people are clustered at either end of the spectrum (99% straight at one end, 99% gay at the other). But it seems clear that there are a fair number of folks in the middle -- people who prefer one sex but aren't exclusive, or people who honestly don't care about gender.

When you consider that some "straight" men and gay women prefer boyish-looking women, (and some gay men and straight women prefer "girly" men), it seems pretty obvious that sexuality is at least a little fluid.

So your sexual orientation may not be easy to change, but for some people that orientation may be more broadly defined.

    An affirmation of what?

Homosexuals have an incentive to say it is not a choice, even if they dont really believe it. Heteros dont. Thats why I am not asking Homos right now.

what about heteros who are homophobes, wouldn't their incentive be to choose that yes it is a choice

If they are hetero and homophobic, then it is reasonable to assume they probably dont think it is a choice. Right?

All the poll requires is a little honesty.
