I guess if we were going to have a global geography quiz a lot of us might be surprised at what we don't know, but it comes from it not being relevant to us.

BTW - Tasmania is a state of Australia :)

That was tomfoo who had the shower curtain. I suppose all Americans should get one of those, it would probably help.

Right, so what you should know is based on geographic proximity? Not knowing that Paris is the capital of France, is not stupid, because it is far away? But if you didn't know that St George's was the capital of Grenada, that would be really stupid of you because of geographic proximity? That doesn't seem right to me, but if you say so, ok.

Canada is "mostly harmless" so nobody thinks about you. Now I'll wager more people know the capitol of Saudi Arabia or Israel. I'll bet they know the capitol of Germany too.

be interesting to see if you are correct - although I suspect you are referring to the capital of these places.

Our grammatical English is about the same and considering both nations have problems with such syntax, I should point out the possessive punctuation of Canada in reference to it's capitol, would be "Canada's Capital".

    It's punctuation, not grammar.

that's an interesting term - why are people who inform others of their grammatical/spelling mistakes referred to as nazis?

The phrase "spelling nazi" has it's roots on the internet, going back to the precursor of discussion forums called "USENET" or the "Newsgroups".

Now, I'm not concerned about spelling or grammar but the first thing that hit me about this thread was "Canadas". I normally would have passed this by but as the underlying thought here is how dumb many American's are (which I agree with, just look at the GOP/**********s) I just wanted to point out that there are certain traits shared by both nations.

I've been to Canada a few times however and have nothing but good things to say about our Canadian friends.

Honestly this is probably more a problem with Canada than America. Knowing the capital of Canada is not useful knowledge to know. Because it's just not. Canada is a small economy. Not a big tourist destination. No impressive population. No impressive culture. It's just boring all around. They aren't evil. They aren't good. They are just bland. Like pale white paste.

Canada needs a new image. The only people excited about Canada are American 19 year olds who want to drink.

Speaking of spelling here is a good Canada joke for the kids.

How did Canada come up with it's name? They wanted to call it CND but when asked to spell it the founding Canadian said "C eh? N eh? D eh?"

You are wrong about 2 out of 3, so clearly not!! :giggle: Germany is Berlin(though to be fair, Bonn WAS the capital of the FRG and unified Germany for a time) and Jerusalem is the capital of Israel.

PS. I would have assumed you were joking, but Riyadh IS the capital of Suadi Arabia.

How does knowing Canada's capital increase my contributions to society?

I find it queer that so many people feel that in order to be intelligent, useful, resourceful, etc; you need to learn the capitals of other countries/states, or their GDP, primary export, etc. This has no impact on an average citizens daily life. It is useless information. How many Americans have asked you sincerely, or get pissed off that you don't know all 50 states, or their capitals? It's a complete waste of time. It won't enhance your life in the least, so you shrug it off, as most should do.

Europeans have some sort of inferiority complex, so they make mountains out of mole hills to try and belittle Americans. They wonder why we make fun of them so much.

The Senators need a better team btw. They were horrible this year. I'd like to see the Canucks beat the Sharks, since the Sharks beat my Wings :-(

Interesting. I was wondering why I got Israel wrong, and it turns out that there's a huge controversy over which is the actual capital. I didn't know about that either, just always thought it was Tel Aviv. Probably because no Western nations acknowledge Jerusalem as the capital, so I've never heard it referred to as such until just now.

Meh. At least you know I didn't cheat by googling them :p
/still don't know (or care) what the capital of Canada is.
