You need to go to a good school of economics.

GDP per hours worked is an excellent measure of a nation's productivity.

Socialist countries have too many unreasonable employee benefits like an early retirement age, excessive unemployment benefits and very long paid vacations. These giveaways drive their worker productivity way down and cause their balance of trade deficits with other countries to skyrocket.

    you are funny!

This information is way out of date.

Ireland has corrected this problem by going to a market based economy and doing away with their unworkable socialist economy.

"Government finances began to show signs of trouble in mid-2008. Government deficits increased, many businesses closed and unemployment increased. The Irish Stock index (ISEQ) fell. Many immigrant workers left."

I think that the biggest Greek problem is that the communists there have very strong support and respect of people. It's probably because of their role in the Greek civil war. That's why they chose the governments they chose and that's why they now protest.

If they do not draw a line, a point beyond which member nations cannot spend beyond their means, then competent nations will work for them forever.

Perhaps, but what can you expect from a paper Union? Did you think such garbage could really last? I'm actually very curious on this point.

If the line they wanna draw includes no regard for the long term health of the Euro as a unit of currency, then punishing member states in said currency unit to the point of general strikes shutting down the entire country is the way to go?

Personally I think fiscal health of entire planet is more important than teaching the Greeks a lesson.

Oh yeah that and money is only as real as a concept. As long as people believe there is worth in the little pieces of paper will the little pieces of paper have value.

If the Greeks still had their own currency there would be many options afforded their government to handle this crisis, since they don't they are beholden to whatever the EU decides, hence the passing of the legislation that caused said riots.

One of my best friends in China was a frenchman, and he told me how f'd up the Quebec people where with their deisre for purity of language and such. I'm thinking if you ever waste the time to get to know me, I'm not as shallow as you may desire me to be.

I have to laugh at some of you people, whats happening in Greece is pretty basic and nothing to do with socialism. They have been living beyond their means, just like the US. A lower standard of living is now required.

    They have oil

The argument is still not good, because the poorest countries in this world are the most capitalist ones with very small health care and education sectors.

Prepare yourself to move once more -- unless the paper Union known as the USA survives the current crisis.

I know, right? They should just privatize everything and their problems will be over.

Of course, not the point though if we are arguing economic mismanagement. We are told by others that socialist policies are the problem. I know people who earn twice what I do and are always on the bones of their arse while others earn less than half and live a good lifestyle. Countries arent much different, the basic economic principle is the same. The US is a prime example of a country that has huge wealth and resources yet is going down the gurgler because of decades of economic mismanagement.
