China. Not really news. There are some famous cases of passer bys who helped some road victims but were accussed later to be the perpetrator. Institutional failures lead to a lack of trust.

It's hard to imagine such apathy. I wonder if the fact that the child was actually a girl had anything to do with the indifference of passerby's. From what I understand, it's preferable to have a boy in China. Even if that were the case, it's hard to imagine the lack of compassion or concern.

My undertstanding is that people were afraid of legal implications. There is no trust on others or the institution. There was one famous case in China were a young man helped a Granny who fell. The Granny insisted that it was the young man who knocked her down. The court cannot verify can ruled the man to pay half of the supposed damages to the Granny. There was then a general fear of helping someone you don't know.

I guess that could be the case.

But I don't know. The first truck blatantly ran her over, as did the second truck. It's just hard to imagine people would instinctively fear involvement over the more natural reaction to help a child.

If you ever want to hear a story of passing by a child on the street google pastor Bill Wilson of metro ministries. His mother left him on a corner and the last she said said to him was I cant do this anymore. His story is sad.

Was he run over by two trucks and left in the street to die?

A 2 yr old toddler out in the street by herself, run over by 2 trucks and where were the parents? And all those people strolled by the little girl and showed no concern or tried to help her....... gawd! what a twisted world we live in!

China is a (*)(*)(*)(*)hole just like Saudi Arabia and the rest of those countries who treats their goats & donkeys better than they do their females........

I can understand that fear. But when you find someone lying in the street or wherever, you don't move them b/of the possibility of causing further injuries, but a decent person would call 911 and stay w/that person until help arrived....

I've heard of cases where a good samaritian moved an injured person further away from the accident, for safety's sake, like the possibility of the car exploding only to be sued by the injured person later ......... crap! I'll never understand that mentality. Someone stops to help and they get sued.........

I'm baffled by the idea of this happening in China. This is the sort of thing you'd expect to see in places that do not meet the definition of "developed" by any means. I guess I'm just use to seeing children lying in the dirt dying of starvation as people aimlessly mill about them (because there is nothing they can do), rather than a child laying in the middle of the street in a busy market of an industrialized nation.

That's VERY said - but he wasn't run over by 2 trucks and left to die b/c of the cold, depraved indifference of people.....

You'd think his mother would have had some feelings in her and had contacted CPS about putting him in a children's home and placed for adoption, but some parents just don't care enuf to do it the right way for the kid......

The more the rich pit the poor against each other chasing after an increasingly smaller piece of the leftover econmic pie, the more we are going to see this kind of apathy, worldwide and even in the U.S.

Sad, but not surprising. I see news items for the U.S. that turn my stomach.

So you think poverty or wealth disparity has something to do with it?

Absolutely. Almost every social ill can be traced back to bad economics, imo.

Hmm, I dunno. Granted, China is no Western nation, but it's not Africa either.

Negative choices are influenced by situations such as need and emotions such as despair, anger and fear. Without situations in which people are placed into having needs which they cannot meet, there would be considerably less violence, crime and apathy, imo.

I hear ya, I just have a hard time believing that poverty in this region is extreme enough to explain this level of apathy. Ran over twice and 18 people just walked on by...

In situations like those found in Africa, where children are starving to death, where there are war zones, it's more understandable. There is literally nothing to be done in some cases, because there are no resources, no help.

It's clear that things are not that dire where this occurred.

I don't disagree with you, but even though China is undergoing an upswing in a rising middle class and less poverty, it is still very much a two-tiered society in many ways.

One interesting thing about this specific incident and China is the actual socialization which involves less concern for individuals and individual rights hence lowering the value or regard for individuals as opposed to the United States in which tiny minorities often have outsized levels of power for their population.

Many Asian cultures put society first, people after and sometimes that leads to human rights abuses that would be unimaginable in the States. I'm not sure that it's all bad, though. I think perhaps a healthy medium between society first and mememe would be the best. Perhaps the Scandinavian countries which rate so highly on the happiness and best nations scales have it closer to a healthy balance.

That sounds plausible. Maybe this video demonstrates a sort of conditioned cultural attitude. It still seems like a bit of a stretch though, due to the victim being a child. I guess I'm just assuming that people instinctively react in a protective manner towards children in situations like this.

I'd like to think that too. I used to reasonably expect such a reaction, but perhaps I'm more cynical now with the latest rounds of news stories involving people killing their own children, abandoning their own children, killing other people's children and allowing live-in boyfriends to abuse or kill their children.

These stories are so frequent it's not even news anymore and it is terribly sad.

Unfortunately this kind of behaviour is not restricted to China. It seems to be a rather common form of reaction irrespective of the system people live under:
