    Alright. Here is the dilemma.

The gun budget is full and looking to be spent on a pistol. However, there are several pistols vying for my heart.

The first is a Beretta 92FS. Indestructible. Timeless. A classic. Ammo is not too expensive. Fast. Lots of accessories.

The second is a S&W .44 Mag with a 4" barrel. Used. Ammo is pricey. This was a custom job with an unfluted barrel, but it is a (*)(*)(*)(*)ing hand cannon that is timeless and will stop a charging buffalo.

Next would be a 1911 .45. Again, timeless. A design that has lasted 100 years, literally.

    Thoughts?

Hands down, the 911... for me.

Obviously, the 44 mag is more powerful, but are you buying it to stop charging buffalo? LOL

    Good luck with your decision.

Interesting, considering you alluded to Americans loving guns, as a negative thing, in one of the Aussie threads. ;)

Question is, what are you buying it for. If it is for self defense then the 45 without a doubt. As it was ment to stop a person in their tracks. But if it is to be taken into the woods then the 44 mag. That will stop a grizzly.

The 92FS is the civilian version of the U.S. military's M9, and despite many in the ranks who like to bash it I thought it was an adequate pistol. A little on the heavy side for a 9mm. If it was me shopping for a new pistol I would get the 1911 and for sure avoid the 44 magnum hand cannon
with it's violent recoil. I've put hundreds of rounds through an M9, and despite the haters, never found it to be unreliable, it's just there are better 9mm pistols out there. Go for the .45 acp.

Who makes the 1911 you're thinking about buying?

Depends on what you want it for.

I would go for the 1911. I am actually in the market for one, I'm looking at this one.

The .44 Mag is fun to shoot, but it is a hand cannon, as you said.

The Beretta 92FS is a beautiful gun, and probably the best choice for concealed carry, but not a lot of stopping power.

    What he said -

If you're looking at it for self-defense, consider this - Gabrielle Giffords survived a 9mm headshot.

If you don't already have a WW2 era 1911A1 get one ( Like an 1944 Ithaca) otherwise take your money & get a few other COLLECTABLE 9mm Pistols ( S & W Model 59 the older the better, ( Early first Gen Glock 17 with serial number less than 1500 ...

What would it be used for? Hmmmm. Mostly for a sidearm for hog hunting, where you need to stop something real quick.

The 9mm mostly because I think they are one of the coolest pistols ever made. The .45 because it is a classic, though not particularly one of my favorite. The 44 because it is just cool.

Go with the original maker, Colt. It may cost a bit more but it is well worth it.

I owned a Colt .45 in the satin nickle finish years ago. I sold it. I could kick myself. :(

The 1911 for sure. I've never thought too highly of Beretta (handguns), don't know many others who do either... especially servicemen. The S.W. is probably the most accurate of the trio, but capacity is obviously a problem.

I thought you had a specific use in mind. But it looks like you are just wanting to add a gun to your collection. Nothing wrong with that.

You might try eeny, meeny, miny, moe.

I think it is going to be the..... 44.

Private ownership that predates the current registration process so i do not have to muck about with that. It is useless except to scare the crap out of anyone within a mile of it going off, but will not jam and can drop a wounded and angry hog with no problem.

Can't talk you out of it huh? I shot a friend's short barrel .357 and after 3 loaders I was done. Very violent recoil takes the joy out of shooting for fun. Go with a longer barrel and double up on the hearing protection; plugs and head phone style protectors over that. You'll thank me later.
    Keep those wrists straight.

Yeah, I know. it is useless, but (*)(*)(*)(*), it is cool.

Trust me, my wrists are balls of muscle.

I like Model 29's, but don't like the short barrel (I have one, with a 6" barrel)...of those three, I'll take the 1911. My wife has a Beretta 92, I'm not impressed with it.

    An M&P 45? Same thickness as a 1911, but a 10rd. magazine, 14rd. mags available too.

As the moment I have 951rds. through my pistol, zero cleaning, zero failures.

Not a single stoppage, stovepipe, or anything.

    My M&P45 is awesome.

Yeah, I am rethinking it now. I am not known for my making snap decisions. The 45 is nice, but as a boar sidearm? not sure. The 44 would drop a charging rhino and not jam. The 92fs is pretty much out at this point, though it may make a reentry.

Early on, I suggested the .45 hands down (personal protection). But after reading your intended purpose, I would have to go with the .44 mag.

Again, good luck with your decision, and good hunting.

The Beretta is an oversize, heavy and outdated pistol shooting a borderline calibre..
The 44 is as you say expensive to shoot.
The 1911 is indeed timeless and for a good reason, he has proven itself on the battlefield and off for 100 years. Its design has been steadily improved and literally thousand of people and companies offer ways to customize this weapon. It fires a proven man-stopper and is a fine choice. Later on you can even add a shorter barrel and slide and produce a much lighter carry weapon. You can even add a 22 conversion and shoot it as cheaply as it is possible to do, far cheaper than any center-fire.
