there is no such thing as permanent price gouging (or temporary price gouging for that matter)

I think you can control access to natural resources, sure. I think that there are sometimes droughts, or flood where the water becomes undrinkable.

We were talking recently in a thread regarding price-gouging during the aftermath of Katrina. The water was undrinkable. Clean water was priced out of the reach of many people who were refugees at that point. That was a great example of price-gouging.

Was it price gouging? Or was it a natural rise in the cost of clean water due to the temporary scarcity? Who controlled the water? And how long did it take before the price of clean water came back down?

Six of one, a half dozen of another.

If it takes more than three days (and it did), that's death by market. Kind of sad and pointless.

I applaud you for trying, but these guys inhabit a different reality. It doesn't matter how much evidence you use, they'll just continuously deny things.

Victory is accomplished in this context by forcing them to rationalize to such an extent that they realize they're doing it. :)

since price gouging doesn't exist, if you're saying price gouging should be illegal, that would be like making a law that unicorns should be real.

Don't buy it if you think the price is too high.

You really think that's a practical option in regards to drinking water. Medicine. Oil.

    Dr. Righteous:

I don't think you even understand what the term "Illiterate " means.

In your case it means you have not the slightest idea what you are talking about.

Natural Monopoly: "An industry in which multiform production is more costly than production by a monopoly" It has nothing to do with Government and everything to do with technology.

The production of weather data by a network of recording stations and the provision of utility services are classic examples because there is simply no price advantage to the consumer of having Two people measuring temperature and rainfall in a town or running multiple sets of power lines to each property.

As for Von Mises, I don't have to read BS, the source documentation for the entire Standard Oil breakup, that contradicts the Von Mises snake oil, including the details of their crimes, are easily available on the net . Google is your friend. Please actually try and Learn something.

Everyone (just about) thinks gasoline is too high, but most people have no choice but to buy it.

Since almost all private transportation is fueled by gasoline...and most places lack public transportation.

So gasoline apparently isn't actually too high. People may wish it were lower, but since it's still beneficial for them to buy at the price it isn't really too high.

But you can make a lot of money -- and a lot of people can die in the interim.

To say that it can't happen, or that it hasn't happened, or that it isn't happening right now -- I think that flies in the face of reality.

No, you can't make a lot of money charging more than the market price. No one will buy your product, or not enough will. You maximize revenue by charging the market price.

The point is that it doesn't matter if a business tries to charge too much for their products, because you don't have to buy their products.

That doesn't apply to drinking water. You do have to have it.

Not in the case of Katrina.

Price gouging is wrong, immoral, and illegal.
