Amazing, simply amazing the man won't talk to these leaders face-to-face.

Except Reid, of course. Barack met with Harry at least twice last week... no doubt to plot their strategy. Can't let any good crisis go to waste, ya know? Prob called from the golf course. Most golfers frown on using cell phones on the greens, but when you're POTUS, guess you can do whatever you (*)(*)(*)(*) well please.

Obama calls Boehner, Reid amid tax cut standoff
    The Associated Press
    12/21/2011 09:54:34 AM PST

WASHINGTON—The White House says President Barack Obama has called House Speaker John Boehner and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid to urge a resolution to the payroll tax cut standoff.

Spokesman Jay Carney says Obama urged Boehner to bring the House back into session to pass a two-month extension of the cuts previously approved by the Senate. Carney says Obama reiterated that he is committed to then working on a full-year extension of the cuts.

Carney would not say how Boehner responded to Obama's request.

Carney says unless the House passes the two-month extension, taxes will increase on 160 million people after the first of the year.

I really can't comprehend how anyone can on one hand vehemently fight even a 1.4% increase of the wealthiest earners taxes, but on the other hand questions the siginificance of taxing an additional 5% of someones wages living in poverty. Truly baffling.

This topic is about the payroll tax cut... NOT taxing the wealthy. Poor people don't pay taxes... 5% of nothing is nothing. (not to mention it's 2%, not 5%... which is still nothing)

Social Security can be sustained through long-term reform. It does not warrant an increase in payroll taxes.

Frankly, both sides agree that an extension of these tax cuts is necessary. What they disagree on is how to pay for them. Democrats want to pay for it with a tax increase in a different area. Republicans want to pay for it with spending cuts.

Mine was a general statement, iJoeTime. The amt of the payroll tax cut is 2%. Try to see the whole forest without getting hung up on little leaves.

("Avg cost per taxpayer if the cuts are not extended... $1,000" -- divided by 52 weeks = $19.23/wk)

Which is basically my point. We've got to start cutting back someplace. What makes a 2010 2% payroll tax cut so critical? Will the extra twenty bucks a week save somebody from having their mortgage foreclosed on?

The extension of these tax cuts is of significant importance in an election year. Consider the major voter bases in the upcoming elections.

One of these groups is the elderly. Poor elderly Americans rely on Social Security, but they also get out to the polls. Both Democrats and Republicans need the elderly vote, and that means appealing to them by ensuring they pay the least amount for their services.

I agree we have to start somewhere also Mouth. The difference is I don't think you should start by hitting the poorest people first in an already difficult economy.

I agree. Institute long-term social security reform. Do not increase the tax burden on the poorest Americans in the short-term.

However, a two month extension isn't good enough. We need a one year extension.

Lets not get the panties in a bind. The media seems to want to manipulat you into focusing on the politician and using scare tactics on the public to get their support. If you look at the end result not the first action, you will see how this plays out.

And the national debt is just that, no big deal. And no need to get all hissy because, if you look for the information on your own state you will see that the "debt" issue is everywere and it is closer to home in your State vs the Federal Gubment. Unless of course you are dependent on the Federal Gubment Cheese.

In other words your State debt is and will impact you more than the federal one.

So relax, go out and spend some money on yourself, have a nice meal, get a manicure and tret yourself well. The national debt and tax issue is not a big one to get worked up about.

    LOL

Not sure why 'poorest Americans' keeps coming up... the poorest Americans don't pay payroll taxes. Nor do the elderly... who just got a 3.6% COL increase on SS.

Obama's payroll tax cut actually hurt the lowest-paid folks from its inception since it took away the $400 Making Work Pay deduction.

The best defense is a good offense. Since Obama can't run on his record, he campaigns for the millionaire tax increase while decrying the SS tax cut. Does that make any sense to any sensible person? If it doesn't then remember who and why they are making a big hoopla about it!!!

Senate Dems were attempting to pass the buck again, so there could be another fight in 2 more months, we did this last year on the budget and deficit. When is enough enough. The Senate should do their job then this wouldn't have been a mess

Maybe that is what sheep do, Actually I happen to think that ON MY OWN! It is called critical thinking for those who have never encountered it.

Obama is spinning so much in his campaigning, he really has the sheeple confused. Last year he signed the tax cuts while being held hostage (in his words), then complained about it. Then campaigning this year has complained about those pesky short term bills, then campaigned for his million tax hike, now wants tax cuts again! I do realize this could be very confusing to those sheeple who are awaiting his directive on their marching orders. However since the TEA party members were elected to actually change the policies instead of becoming them we aren't that confused, that is what they were elected for.

It isn't the TEA party's fault because the Senate Dems can't pass a budget for 2 years, that falls on Reid/Obamas problem. For those watch the media for their current news tend to follow just what they hear.

Fine, let's revise this. Lower and middle class citizens will see a 2 percentage point increase on their payroll taxes. As a proponent of low tax rates, I believe that no American should pay more in taxes.

I'm sick of this last-minute panic stuff. Did you see Bill Clinton on O'Reilly last night? Geesh, even though he wasn't my fav when he was in office, he looks like a world-class leader when compared to Barack Obama. Can't figure out if Obama doesn't know how to lead... or doesn't care to learn. Either way, he's a zero.

If they were to actually do their jobs they totally revamp the entire tax code. This amending of a 40 + yr tax code, 8000 + pages is getting really antiquated. There should be a total reform of tax code to what I believe should be a simpler form for everyone. The first congress that ever does that will get a good thumbs up, so far everyone seems to just put a bandaid on an old wound.

I agree. But doubt very seriously the 2010 payroll tax cut had much impact on the average American's financial well-being. I know it didn't help me... I barely noticed it. :bored:

Now, if they wanted to continue taking our money thru the year and send us a $1000 payroll tax rebate check, that might make a glitch on the radar screen. Otherwise, it's about as close to nothing as they can get.

The key for America to be successfull it for Americans to be independent of the government. You need to pat yourself on the head.
