RE: Marriage in general. Well... I think a lot of it has to do with your core values. Christians believe that marriage is a God sanctioned commitment and that it is the cornerstone of the family unit. If this is not your belief on marriage then I can see why it wouldn't make sense to you.

As far as gay marriage goes and the gay agenda in general. I think a lot of what is going on is that folks are trying to change the culture in America and we are splitting into two (with a rather large grey area in the centre) factions. Those who want America to be more progressive and those who believe that America was founded upon certain principles that still hold true today and that made us (with all due respect to our friend in the UK) the greatest nation in the history of mankind. I fall in the latter category, sounds like you might fall a little closer to the former. But... doesn't mean we can't still have civil discussions about it and respect each other's opinions, right? ;)

 Uh yeah... there might be one or two threads already relating to marriage/gay marriage. My position on marriage in general is I think it's a good thing (18 years worth in my case). I don't personally condone or agree the homosexual lifestyle or agenda, but they should be free to do as they choose as long as it doesn't encroach upon my freedoms. They will be the ones to answer for their actions just as I will for mine.

I think where the big sticking point comes in (at least here in the U.S.) is government sanctioned gay marriage. That gets into a whole can of worms because here, married couples have different tax treatment, legal status, the ability to adopt children, etc. and there are a plethora of social, financial, and moral issues around that. Nasty little subject here in the U.S. You may have seen in the headlines that the state of Maine (a pretty liberal state) voted down a provision just last night.

Ah... now THAT'S a sign of true wisdom. Good on you! Truth is an elusive thing these days isn't it my friend? I hear you, sometimes it's hard to cut through all the spin and get to the truth. Perhaps what you were thinking IS true, but you owe it to yourself to make sure before you allow it to enter your belief system. What I have done is, without regard for party positions on the issues, thought about what my core beliefs are. Then I try my best to pick the candidate that is most aligned with my belief system. You'll never get the perfect fit, but you have to at least try.

What ever you do, don't let the media make that decision for you... Make sense?

Well... what exactly don't you like about David Cameron? Is it something about him or something about the CP?

Ahh... but do you like Winston Churchill and Maggie Thatcher? You don't vote for the person, you vote for the ideals... ;)

Yeah you have to be careful about Wiki too. They seem to be pretty good about keeping stuff cleaned up, but you should probably verify anything that really matters to you with multiple sources. Are you Tory or Labour?

Saw you stopped by the blog. Thanks for checking in my friend.

I would recommend starting with the subjects you know the most about (e.g. I don't post a lot about European politics because I don't follow them very close unless they happen to intersect with the U.S., but I know a bit about finance, so I post on a lot of financial issues, etc.) Then other topics that you find interesting but don't know a lot about, just subscribe to the threads and as things come up you're not sure you understand Wiki them or ask a friend who knows more about them. Just remember - not everything stated on this site as fact is. Always ask someone for their source and check the source out to see if it's credible. Rule of thumb, the only blog you can trust is mine (just kidding!)

Ah, no worries. Stick around we'll get to know ya anyway. You're in good company at Smarties! Let me know when you decide to venture out into the political side. I'd be interested to hear your thoughts on some of the issues.

RE: Puppy pic. Thanks. Her name's Stormy. We recently lost our black lab Tess (she ran away and we haven't been able to find her). I was so heartbroken because Tess used to sit with me on the back porch and help me post to the PF, so I talked the wifey into getting another one. We got her at a local animal shelter...

Ha! That's a loaded question. There are some folks out there who wish I would try more often, but basically there is an inverse correlation between the intelligence of their argument and my patience with them. When I lose patience I get kinda stinky...

Hi Myth - thanks for the friend request! Welcome to the PF. Always happy to be associated with our good friends and allies from across the pond (although some more than others). P.S. Don't believe all the stories about how mean I am - I can be really nice if I try.
