The 1000 troops are a real defense BUT, the Argies deployed 12,000 the last time. 4 aircraft are a joke...there are hundreds on the other side. 1 destroyer is just enough to get out of the way. A sub WOULD be a factor but there is not one there.

What your forget is the geography....the area is VERY big and the troops and aircraft very few.

The Argies can have it. It is of no use to Britain.

If you sank the islands, there would be no more dispute.

That is the way it is supposed to be.

No one in the UK is forced to join the military you know and hasn't in a couple of generations.

    If we want them.

    International treaties?

Mere words on a piece of paper.

All that ultimately matters if force of arms.

    As has been said

"Diplomacy is the art of saying 'nice doggie'...until you can find a rock".

The Isle of Skye's inhabitants have declared they want to be under the rule of France.

    http://www.nato.int/terrorism/five.htm

Both the UK and the USA are members of NATO, and allies in that sense. Surely an attack on a British Overseas Territory would necessitate US participation in the defence of that territory? Otherwise what were we Brits doing in Afghanistan?

What has happened to good ole pacification ha ha? As an ex PsyOps army (101st non airborne, I blew out my knee on first static jump!) guy I think the British are dropping the ball of their possession called the Falklands. If the British become too weak to hold on to the islands it will revert to the strongest strong man or nation or rebel group. In these days of world opinion and UN influence we are forgetting why that war and military might defines reality. All this stuff is cyclic. It goes like this; People get restless and too comfortable, which gives them time to talk and plot. Then as tensions continue to rise for whatever reason real or imagined, someone or a nation commits an atrocity or trigger event that causes war. The strongest wins and usually redraws the borders. As long as the victor is strong the borders usually remains (think Korea). Or east and west Germany, a more complicated situation but it still fits, if the USSR did not weaken east Germany would still be a nation. Now the Falklands, if they become strong and pissed off enough the test will began anew~

As I have claimed most wars never really end, they are simply holding patterns oftentimes with across the border sorties. For example the crusades which is all about the west (read as Christendom) vs the rest of the world, has never ended and never will until Armageddon...

Are you sure it wasn't your head that got blown off --rofl
But listen here you fifth rate sky diver , we Brits don't take much notice of Argentinians , particularly a desperate woman variety who is short of votes .
The last time our fighting guys turned up , the Argies splattered their trousers and couldn't get their hands in the air fast enough .
You watch them play football ? Football is a great insight into national character ( laugh as much as you like ) and they are a cunning bunch of cry babies who would stamp on you but never look you in the eyes .
One SAS platoon will take care of those amateurs .

Whats a sky driver? I suppose its nothing like a solider of fortune or some kind of compliment eh? You should man up and admit that the citizen ship of England have been pacified by their own government, bending over and handing their firearms to the *cof* authorities. So I lost a LOT of respect for you guys when there was nary a fight just a roll over and take it attitude! Then I was surprised when the Brits lost a modern guided missile cruiser or what ever it was by a Exocet missile. So how you guys handled the last rebellion it (but not too much), embarrassed me as a veteran and our country as an ally of England.

I have more respect that you know for your soldiers its your armed forces leaders that are suspect. So get your long guns pistols and balls back then we can talk about what as sky driver is eh? Ha ha I hope you again dont take my criticism's of your leaders and the gun thing too seriously, well not too seriously!

We had very few guns to 'hand over' when the firearms ban came into force. Unlike America Britain has never had mass gun ownership, has never needed or wanted mass gun ownership and has never subscribed to the obscene gun-fetish culture so beloved of Americans-who call themselves 'civilized'.

Furthermore with a gun crime rate over 40 times that of Britain, I'd be embarrassed to even mention guns if I were you. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gun_politics_in_the_United_Kingdom

Oh dear ! what a pessimist you are .

The British military was outnumbered last time. Every British soldier is better than a thousand Argies as has been clearly illustrated in 1982.

I've no idea what your battle experience is , but I'm more inclined to take note of some one more knowledgeable , like :

Admiral Woodward, 79, who led a task force of two aircraft carriers, a dozen frigates and destroyers and four submarines – among a total of 100 vessels in 1982 – along with 25,000 servicemen.

Admiral Woodward warned last year that the Government’s defence cuts meant we would not have sufficient military might to defend the islands – although he now believes the situation has been remedied by reinforcements, including sending the Type 45 destroyer HMS Dauntless.

‘It seems to me that the present defence posture down there is now adequate,’ he said.

It would be nice if we could get to discuss something without this spotty third-former chest-beating.

That is because everyone here is so rich because of our tory government that only those who are bored and want to die need join the forces. Grow UP!

Obviously, the people there and their sheep.
    England - GO HOME !
Argentina - respect them and their states rights.... Actually in order for man to own land , he must take/steal it from another !
So, of course, its the 3000 and their decision.
    This must be respected.

Yes the rivalry, and some would argue hatred, between these countries is such that truth is often replaced by myth from both sides. I've been to Sao Paulo, Rio and Buenos Aires and I know where I would prefer to live - and its not Brazil.

And none of this matters one iota.
If the Falklanders determine that they wish to be Argentines, then so be it..
    This must be respected.
