Was he sentenced to jail time merely for smoking a joint? If so I'd appreciate a link to a source.

The statement was made that people are being imprisoned merely for "smoking a joint." I'd like some proof that that's happening.

So now we must make sure nobody gets addicted to anything? That's a pretty tall order. There are sex addicts, gambling addicts, drunks, adrenaline addicts, coffee addicts.....A human being can become addicted to most anything.

Besides addicts can function in society. Just look at the alcoholics...you know, the ones that have a drink at lunch every day or go to the bar on a regular basis. Very few are fall-down drunks but they are addicted.

Same with Heroine, folks can function quite well as long as they have a supply and if it was legal so what? Cocaine is the same it is addictive but who cares when one could go to the local drug store and buy it off the shelf?

I realize these views are highly controversial but, they are meant to be to get folks thinking about the idiocy of our failed war on drugs.

And sometimes society uses bogus scientific statistics to dictate the rules.

Well, to be fair, I started drinking before I started anything else. I guess alcohol was my gateway drug.

Anyway, let me explain why this gateway drug idea is myth, or actually why the trend is caused precisely because pot is illegal. If you're already doing something that can get you in big trouble with the law, why not go on to experiment with more dangerous drugs. I mean, you nothing more to lose, legally speaking.

This whole argument is based solely on statistics, which alone can be very misleading. It has never been proven that there is anything inate within marijuana itself that causes a desire within users to experiment with more dangerous drugs.

And as I said before, we already have a profound problem with alcohol addiction. Why compound that problem by including another behavior altering drug.

As for jail time I know of no jurisdiction that criminalizes the possession of a personal use amount of cannabis. It's routinely handled with a citation resulting in a forfeiture.[/quote]

Pot is illegal because the Right's beloved Big Corporation would not be able to eliminate competition, immorally and unjustly, for cotton/nylon/paper etc. products; people could simply grow marijuana at their own homes and sell it to paper/clothing companies and compete against current paper/clothing Big Corporations.

    (*)(*)(*)(*) you, Corporate America.

It seems extremely odd to me that anyone who supports Ron Paul- a Libertarian- would be advocating Prohibition for marijuana.

The clear evidence is that Prohibition does not prevent drug use or addiction- and the Prohibition against alcohol shows us the results:

    Crime increases
Heavy drug usage actually increases during Prohibition
Deaths due to 'bad' or poisonous drugs increases
    Prison populations increase

Read the "Poisoner's Handbook" for an eye opening view point of the repercussion of Prohibition from the viewpoint of the Medical examiners of New York during the period.

Drug prohibition is a moral palative. It makes people feel like they are helping those others who are too weak to take care of themselves- but the actual numbers show that Prohibition hurts more than it helps.

After Prohibition was repealed alcohol addiction steadily increased to today's record levels.

That's because he isn't a Ron Paul supporter or anything like a libertarian.

And exactly how could that have been measured? How was alcohol addiction being measured in 1935?

I have not heard anything to support your contention, but what I said still remains the same-

During prohibition, deaths due to alcohol rose- binge drinking increased- poisonous alcohol(just like tainted drugs) killed and maimed thousands of Americans- crime increased- criminals became wealthy and powerful.

Read the "Poisoners Handbook" to read the account from the point of view of the Medical Examiners office of the City of New York. The book is actually about the creation of the invention of techniques to detect poisoning, but Prohibition hit NY so hard, he spent more time with the victims of binge alcohol drinking and those poisoned by illegal alcohol than those deliberately poisoned.
