That would all depend on which definition of statism you adhere to. In my mind, it makes them right-wing authoritarian statists. Where the left are economic statists.
True, but it's easy to get confused in the political shades of grey. We inevitably get lost in the miasma of political pandering where no true definition can be applied since neither party truly stands for anything aside from what serves to benefit them. In the end, I think both sides wind up on the broad scale of statism at one point or the other. One could argue that anything aside from true anarchy is statist in a way. Even miniarchists are statists to a degree. We just have the benefit of our statist views being such that the state serves to limit the power of the state. Thereby minimizing corruption and power.
Most republicans I've talked to won't vote for RP due to his foreign policy. They firmly believe we should be policing the globe and are afraid of everything from Islam taking over the world to China taking over the world. They want to maintain the empire of military bases the US has and are firmly opposed to RP's objectives in this regard. Hope this helps.
Pro tip people who support the idea of state's rights over an individuals freedoms is a statist. Gay marriage and abortion should not be state issues they should be personal. That would be the mantra of a non or anti statist.
