There are no earth shaking events in Ottowa. Even your elections are boring. Why should anybody but you be expected to remember the name of your capital?
I knew Canada's capital years ago. Its where Alanis Morissette was born, and that's how I first came to know it, and that is why I have remembered it. I would probably have difficulty with America's capital, though. I think its Washington. (Well, its where the White House is) I might be wrong!
Not a concentration camp for a start. It's a detention camp. Anything else you'd like to know, just ask.
It's Washington Mak, District of Columbia. If you're ever on the east coast it's a must to visit, absolutely fascinating city. You need to be a bit wary though. Unlike Ottawa or Canberra it has a major crime problem and some of the residential districts are almost slums. They sit cheek by jowl with upmarket districts which is always a bit strange to an Australian, but it does save the crooks a long walk for targets. I'd say someone would need about a week in DC to see most of the tourist things, well worth the trip.
It is the type of thing an educated child knows as a matter of course .Part of junior education . The fact that little goes on in terms of world significance , doesn't prevent me knowing that the capital of Mongolia is Ulan Bator or Port Louis for Mauritius . If you don't know how your planet is put together , there is little chance of global awareness in any fuller sense . And that is a common alleged failing attributed to Americans -- that the vast majority are insular and globally illiterate .
Well this is embarrassing, I would have said Toronto. Graduated from HS in the early 70's and I don't remember anything about Canada being taught in World History, but then I was a science geek. Every thing I know about Canada I learned from picking up Canadian tourist chicks in the bars of Honolulu, and I don't think the mods would not like me discussing my findings here . I do have a very favorable view of Canadians though LOL
Its a bit like the capital of Australia. I would say over 50% would say Sydney as opposed to Canberra. Similar with State Capitols in the the US. I recall somebody who thought that Des Moines was the capital of Sudan.
They weren't a Bill Bryson fan, then. "I come from Des Moines. Well, somebody had to!" http://www.amazon.com/The-Lost-Continent-Travels-Small-Town/dp/0060920084
bill bryson knows his geography. and sees america clearly. which is unusual for an american. still marvelling over the canada thing, meantime. asked a handy 9 year old, here on the other side of the planet, and got "toronto ... no, wait, ottawa". what the hell is going on in that country? cant be blamed schools alone. why arent parents picking up the slack? do they not know their kids are falling down? or do they know but dont care?
I get this all the time, people believing Sydney is the capital of Australia,,, and not only from Americans. This is what happens when you establish a capital city in the middle of a sheep paddock and not in an already established city The choice to establish Canberra almost dead centre between Sydney and Melbourne (the two major cities at time of Federation) is an interesting one.
A two year old thread based on a BS poll? LOL Who gives a rats arse about this info in thd first place? I don't recall ever having heard the story of how having this info burned into memory saved anyones life or advancing any society. How to unclog a sink is more useful info than such nonsense as what berg is where committed to memory. Thats what maps are for!
You are absolutely right, and, heartless conservative that I am, I really do like Canada, or at least I think I do. I'm certainly unaware of any reason why we shouldn't like Canada. I've never been there, and only know what I've been told by friends who have visited it. It seems largely to be a nice, fairly wholesome place, especially in the western half of the country -- perhaps much like the United States was before we started turning into a gigantic pile of festering **** about 12 years ago.... I don't see any real hope for us now, and I hope the Canadians manage to escape what happened to us. Oh, by the way, yet another important American city in good old liberal California went belly-up today -- Stockton.
There's really no reason to know about geography, capitals or anything else these days. We have Google. If you want to go to a capital or somewhere -- that's the pilot's job. How do you pronounce the capital of Kentucky? Looieville? Louisville? Luaville? What is the eastern most state of the United States?
