In my opinion, we should insist on a more well informed electorate than public policies that deny and disparage individual liberty by appealing to ignorance.

That's what I'd do if I were a statist, I don't like seeing large women, or god forbid having them hit on me.

Edit: Have to add I'd never be for such a law and would oppose it just as I oppose this one and many, many others.

Isn't mayor Bloomberg a bit "oversized" himself? Maybe we should find out what he pigs out on and ban it!!!! :)

There's a huge difference between the two issues.

When I sit in the corner of a restaurant and smoke a cigar, the entire room smells like cigar smoke, and you get the privilege of breathing the air I'm polluting with my cigar smoke. Therefore, telling me that I can't smoke inside protects you from breathing the air I've polluted. Direct cause and effect.

Now, where's the direct cause and effect of me drinking a 44-ounce soda? How does my sitting in a booth at McDonald's and drinking a large soda directly harm you?

Consider the "wipers on - lights on" headlight laws. Those aren't meant to help you see in the rain, they're meant so that the rest of the motorists can see you when it rains.

Laws that protect the rest of society from harm caused by an individual are good. Laws that protect the individual from the consequences of his/her own actions are an infringment on personal liberty.

It is my fervent belief that you have the God-given right to life, liberty, the pursuit of happiness, and to act in as stupid a manner as you see fit - so long as you don't directly harm the rest of us.

The Granite State has what I consider to be the best seat belt laws in the United States.

If a person is under the age of eighteen and riding in a motor vehicle in New Hampshire, they must be buckled up, or else in an approved child seat.

Once you turn eighteen, the state presumes that you know what you're doing, you know the consequences of not wearing a seat belt, and that if you choose not do, c'est la vie! They've better things to spend their police budget on than protect you from your stupidity.

Hence the New Hampshire state motto - Live Free Or Die!

I think the fat lil turd can't resist those super size items and wants to ban them due to his own shortcomings and lack of will power. I believe he's the kind of guy who will guzzle the big soda's to wash down the fries and pizza while at the same time blaming those who made it for being fat.

I go with work from time to time, the last time we all ate salads as the main meals were just huge and undigestable.

Does the government regulate what food manufacturers put in the stuff you eat so you don't injest toxic chemicals? Yes.
Does the government regulate what you can throw in your rivers so your food doesn't poison you? Yes.
Are people too stupid to understand they're killing themselves with fat and sugar? Yes.

Why would you want to overburden your already creaking healthcare system to accommodate clueless fat idiots who don't have the personal responsibility to regulate themselves, and are costing you money in the process?

Ah, so you want the liberty to inflict your smoke on others, who also have the freedom and the right not to have to inhale it with their food or drink. See, outside there's thing natural phenomenon called 'wind'...
You may have heard of it-it disperses stuff like smoke.

Ah, but obesity is indirectly harming not only you, but the rest of America's population to the tune of $140 billion in fixing their health. http://voices.washingtonpost.com/checkup/2009/07/how_much_does_obesity_cost.html

No one is forcing them to go to places that allow smoking.

Not what I want, just the reality of the situation. Fat people and smokers cost less. It's their choice to smoke or over eat, and that's how it should be.

Yep, they die earlier. I'm not really seeing the issue. You choose to smoke or over eat you die earlier. It's a known consequence of that choice. In any case the point is that fat people and smokers cost us less in healthcare. I'm tired of seeing the whole "they cost us more and need to be socially responsible" because they don't cost us more. If anything we should be taxing organic food higher because people who eat organic food tend not to be health conscious, thus cost us more money over time.

By the same token no one is forcing anyone to buy super size soda's. Unless someone is spraying soda into other peoples mouths there's really no comparison.

They do cost most more because they die earlier. Is this what you want? Sounds like it to me.
