Now some of you know who you are. You know, the type who get mad when people pray at public schools, sue when a kid hands out a pencil that says "Jesus" on it at a public school. Church/State separation extremists, I'm talking to you. I'm asking you to be consistent.

I'm talking about having a religious funeral at a public school. Normally, this would outrage liberals. Of course, the thing is, the funeral we're talking about isn't Judeo-Christian. Therefore, it's likely liberals will avoid this thread in droves rather than be consistent.

Of course, normal Americans like myself have no problem with these poor people having their funeral at the local high school. We normal Americans understand that freedom of religions doesn't mean banning religion.

So... any liberals want to step up to the plate and oppose this funeral?

Or how about we simply cut the crap and get to the point. Most Church/State separation extremists are only militant when it comes to silencing anything Judeo-Christian. We all know that. So how about you extremists just confirm reality by staying away, and spare us the usual lies, shucking and jiving?

Yeah, use of a public facility is not an endorsement of a religion. I would expect that many groups that involve religion, including the Boy Scouts.

Now if that religion was being used as a basis for teaching or there were instructions to pray for that religion in that school while it is in session, the case woud be different.

However, a funeral is not part of the school curriculum.

I particularly liked this part though. It is as if your post contained so much logic that no one would touch it.

Unfortunately, it did not contain such logic.

It's the summer, no student is in school right now. They're not indoctrinating people into Sikihism, they're just using it as a place to gather.

Separation of church and state relates to government acts, not those of private citizens. The funeral proceeding is completely constitutional.

Oh, it contains plenty of logic, as there are plenty of liberals who would go absolutely beserk if a Christian funeral were to take place at this public school.

It's not my fault you're either too dishonest or too ignorant of these matters to know that.

I agree completely, and maintain many liberals would be absolutely NUTS over this if it were a Judeo-Christian event.

You're talking to people that mostly just exist in your imagination. Those are more like conspiracy theories than factual accounts.

It's the purpose of the event that makes the differnce.

So if they are going to avoid this thread in droves, why bother posting it in the first place?

I certainly do not see any in your argument.

Really? So your argument is what you apparently erroneously think people will do and have nothing to do with actual events?

    How's this working for you?

You are wrong, and you call me names. Because you are wrong. Because you are not right. Because you based your argument not on what happened but what you claimed would happen.

Speaking of which, let's revisit your prediction in your OP, which I actually read all the way.

Now you were wrong twice here. One, when you said liberals would stay away. Two, when you said they would not be consistent.

Public schools are the property of the community they are in. Outside of normal school hours they are free to be utilized for any event so long as the local government agrees.

During school hours where children (from many different faiths) are required to attend - religious evangelizing should not be present.

I have never witnessed anyone harassed for closing their eyes and praying to God privately at school. I attended public schools my whole life.

why would liberals care if a christian church in the community wanted to use a school gymnasium for an event that was expected to draw members of the community in such numbers that the gymnasium was the most appropriate community venue? Not during school hours... not a required attendance event. Ace, you are dead wrong on this one.

    History of the Aitken Bible

On January 21, 1781, Robert Aitken presented a "memorial" [petition] to Congress offering to print "a neat Edition of the Holy Scriptures for the use of schools."
This is the text of that memorial:

    To the Honourable The Congress
of the United States of America
    The Memorial of Robert Aitken
of the City of Philadelphia, Printer

    Humbly Sheweth

That in every well regulated Government in Christendom The Sacred Books of the Old and New Testament, commonly called the Holy Bible, are printed and published under the Authority of the Sovereign Powers, in order to prevent the fatal confusion that would arise, and the alarming Injuries the Christian Faith might suffer from the Spurious and erroneous Editions of Divine Revelation. That your Memorialist has no doubt but this work is an Object worthy the attention of the Congress of the United States of America, who will not neglect spiritual security, while they are virtuously contending for temporal blessings. Under this persuasion your Memorialist begs leave to, inform your Honours That he both begun and made considerable progress in a neat Edition of the Holy Scriptures for the use of schools, But being cautious of suffering his copy of the Bible to Issue forth without the sanction of Congress, Humbly prays that your Honours would take this important matter into serious consideration & would be pleased to appoint one Member or Members of your Honourable Body to inspect his work so that the same may be published under the Authority of Congress. And further, your Memorialist prays, that he may be commissioned or otherwise appointed & Authorized to print and vend Editions of, the Sacred Scriptures, in such manner and form as may best suit the wants and demands of the good people of these States, provided the same be in all things perfectly consonant to the Scriptures as heretofore Established and received amongst us.

LOL. Do you have any problem with an Islamic funeral in a public school? If you want religion in school, you must have every religion. Or you want just Christian religion there?

Separation of church/state is simple and logic, it is not doing religious things at the public places that are of everyone and giving freedom to practice anything you want in private or the correct places like churches. But the schools are not the right places to practice religion or if you want equality you must let to practice all religions that students have.

As it has already been said; as long as the funeral is taking place OUTSIDE of school hours, there is no problem. If Christian want to hold funerals in a HS gym AFTER school is out of session, then go for it, I say.

If you don't want separation between church and state, allow ALL religions input with equal voting rights.

I simply use the Lemon Test from USSC Lemon v. Kurtzman. While I can certainly make a counter-argument to my own, I do not feel compelled to do so, as it requires greater rationalization.

clearly... ace wouldn't care if it were a christian funeral, but somehow has a problem with a sikh funeral. MY position is as a liberal christian is that I think both are equally acceptable.

Where I live, on Sundays, there are quite a few new churches that use the public schools for worship as they do not yet have their own building. No one (liberals included) has an issue with this. It is done outside of school time and has nothing to do with the school day. There is nothing wrong with it.
