US President Barack Obama has a stern warning for the country of Syria. In an address made early Monday, the commander-in-chief confirmed that he has not ruled out an offensive strike on Bashar al-Assad and his regime.

Speaking from the White House, President Obama said that if Syria were to deploy chemical or biological weapons, the United States will follow through with its threat of launching an attack.

Responding to a question about America’s current attitudes towards Assad, Obama said that the United States will not tolerate any efforts to allow Syria or any other countries to use weapons of mass destruction.

“We have been very clear to the Assad regime but also to other players on the ground that a red line for us is we start seeing a whole bunch of chemical weapons moving around or being utilized,” the president said. “That would change my equation. . . . We’re monitoring that situation very carefully. We have put together a range of contingency plans.”

“We cannot have a situation in which chemical or biological weapons are falling into the hands of the wrong people,” Mr. Obama added. “We have put together a range of contingency plans. We have communicated in no uncertain terms with every player in the region that that’s a red line for us.”

Obama added to reporters that his warning doesn’t apply only to Syria, either, but that the United States could consider maneuver with or against any other country that is considering chemical warfare.

“It doesn’t just include Syria. It would concern allies in the region, including Israel, and it would concern us,” President Obama said.


“At this point,” Mr. Obama said, “the likelihood of a soft landing seems pretty distant.”

Last month, Syrian Foreign Ministry spokesman Jihad Makdissi told reporters that his country will not use chemical weapons amid a months-long standoff with anti-Assad rebels. He did, however, admit that Syria has access to such warheads and could deploy them upon further developments.

“All of these types of weapons are in storage and under security and the direct supervision of the Syrian armed forces and will never be used unless Syria is exposed to external aggression,” Makdissi said.

It's nothing but tough talk and everyone knows it. The Republicans don't buy it for a second, and at least half the Democrats are anti-war or anti-Israel. Or both.

If Obama does anything, he might as well dig his own political grave, and the Democrats along with it for this cycle. The DNC is probably yelling at him to cheese it, but Obama's at the point where all he listens to is the voice in his head. The one telling him he's god.

EDIT TO ADD: It WILL be hilarious to see the same O-Bots who hated Bush for starting Iraq defending Obama on this one. I should start looking for some good animated laughter gifs now.

I won't support any military action any where on earth under any circumstances by Barack Obama because he is so inexperienced and fickle he will only get more Americans killed. Case in point: Obama's escalation of the war in Afghanistan where Americans die every day for nothing. Screw Obama.

USA uses chemical weapons against innocent civilians all the time, in VietNam, Iraq, Afghanistan, Waco, Libya and Yugoslavia.

Its all for bravado, the Syrians aren't going to use chemical weapons like the US loves to use on unarmed people.

The President might have a point. If Assad gets desperate enough, he might decide that he has nothing to lose from using chemical weapons against local rebel populations. Warning him in advance that such behavior would draw the direct intervention of the United States may make him hold off from such despicable behavior. Of course, if Assad waits until a few days before the election ...

 

It's not just the US, the UK has vowed to back the US in attacking Syria if chemical weapons use is even threatend or they are moved. No link yet since this is breaking. Give it until tomorrow morning, but this was on CBS news on TV tonight.

Its not just talk. The US wants to take Syria so that Israel can take Iran without local retribution. Even now Id be willing to bet that special/expeditionary forces are commencing recces at the borders.

An invasion would be comparatively easy too. Syria are vulnerable, divided and at war. The US has bases in nearby Greece, such as on Kriti, and the British have a major base on Cyprus. US Logistics, if not a few infantry brigades, are still present in Iraq, and Israel can take them from the South. Turkey wants to make an incursion into Kurdish/northern territory anyway, and Jordan is a US ally.

One even wonders: has a psyops initiative been the cause of the civil war in the first place? Divide and conquer being what it is, it would be ideal.

In any case, Obamas ultimatum has no resolution for the Syrian government. So why would he say it otherwise? Dont underestimate how similar this is to Iraq.

As a 26 year old man I barely have any memory of what peace time feels like. Where we aren't fighting multiple countries at once. And that's kinda sad to me.

 

EXACTLY...and soetoro knows it. Russia has watched us piddle around for years in iraq and afghanistan wasting trillions of dollars and tens of thousands of american soldiers lives..(not to mention the injured) and they know the political climate in this country.They also know how morally weak and financially bankrupt we are.

They need only wait until your lot declare war on China, and for those Americans being marginalised by AIPAC Senators and corrupt political systems, corporations and financial institutions, and tell them NO!
