A cop is a civilian. They are not members of the military.

You have watched too much TV. Cops get instruction in defensive tactics. It does not make them a black belt or MMA pro. Here's something that liberals don't often think about. Police are not supposed to be assaulted. They are not expected to take a bullet, stabbing, or deadly beating. They don't get paid to fight; they get paid to win every time for a career. Think about that. There will be an investigation. If the officer was alone and simply went out of the station to see what was going on with just his sidearm, then he can not be expected to fight a bath salt zombie by himself.

Exactly, so the lynch mob mentality is wrong.

Police are trained to shoot the center mass of a body and only when deadly force is called for. If the officer had tried a trick shot as you suggest and hit a bystander, would you be happy with that decision? Also, if you read what I posted, you should have seen that a shot to the chest did not stop this person right away. If the officer had shot him in the arm, the man may very well have continued his assault and disarmed the officer.

I'll admit that maybe my first reaction was a bit angry. And all the facts should be considered. There are situations like this where gun use would be needed. But the story given does not sound like that situation. Guns should be used as a last resort. It does not sound like the officer attempted to call for backup at all. Which is strange because the attack happened AT the police station. There should have been several cops within shouting distance.

The right over the last 30 years has turned this into a police state. A police state where local cops are dressing like paramilitary and using their weapons quicker simply because a citizen obey their 'commands'.

It MAY be wrong. Or it could be exactly right.

Hitting someone standing right in front of you in the leg, and advancing, as you suggest, is hardly a "trick" shot. And I wonder how many bystanders are standing
around the side of a police station in the middle of the night.

What if the officer shot him multiple times in the legs or arms? How about shooting him in the chest after other methods had been tried?

Run away? What sort of precedent would that set? What message does that send? Hey, you might be dangerous, but, we'll just come back later... That's brilliant, because the moment they retreat, as you wish, and an innocent person is killed you'd be the first person whining about the cops retreating and allowing an innocent person to die... Sorry, if a cop has gun on you and you don't comply, you get what you ask for...

You are, as usual, completely wrong.

Cops are expected to know how to properly respond to force. The proper response to non-deadly, unarmed force is NEVER deadly force, period. If that means being involved in a hand to hand altercation, so be it. Police are held to a higher standard than civilians because they are PROFESSIONALS, trained to defuse conflict and handle situations exactly like this. There are literally books full of statutes and court cases that explain this concept.

To put it more bluntly; this officer has no place on any force, and anyone that thinks otherwise is a moron.

Basically. you're saying an armed officer should risk defeat, possible death and the probability of putting his firearm in the hands of a maniac who that officer believes can beat him in hand to hand combat.
Turns out that officer was probably right as the dead man was a wrestler.

Sorry pal, Rooster Cogburn isn't every lawman on the streets of America.

The cop was looking at a fast moving target, about to attack him.
You don't mess about, you make sure he's going down. Centre mass is the right shot.

What about shooting him in the ass as he runs? It's round like a target. Then there is billy clubs, tasers, pepper spray, stray cats...all of these can be used against them.

why wasn't backup called? The altercation happened at a police station. You'd think several officers would have been available on a moment's notice.

You and I have no clue as to the time scale or other important details.
Given the man was naked and violent, it's possible there was no time to get help.

Also, given the undisputed circumstances, I can understand the cop shooting.

Want the full humanity of a civil society?

    Act like a human being.

I know I will never be shot outside a police station while naked. It's not that hard.

That's why have an investigation. That's all that I'm saying.

At a college campus? Quite a few.

If a shot in the chest didn't stop him, why would a leg hit do the trick? I don't understand.

How do you know this response wasn't proper? Because you read a news article? LOL!!

The legal standard is force that could cause death or great bodily harm. No one has to suffer the threat of death OR GBH. You haven't a clue.

You have absolutely no concept of the standard of disparity of force. None. Zero. Nada. In your fantasy world, a 5' 2" female police officer would have to allow herself to be beaten to death by a 6' 7" 370 escaped convict, if he were unarmed rather than use her firearm. Your reasoning is laughable.

I have to laugh at your pronouncement towards the officer sight unseen. You have no real idea what happened exactly, yet you have judged a person. The lynch mob mentality at PF is breathtaking.

In a civilized, reasoned society like ours, we have an investigation before guilt is attached and heads roll. I prefer our system to your primitive one.

He has no idea what he is babbling on about. That much is clear. A homemaker who went to a CCW class is more knowledgeable than he is.

The facts as reported don't seem to justify killing this kid. There is a video of the whole incident. I can't help but think that, if the video justified the cop's actions, it would have been released.

    We'll see.

I don't think that the news article is that conclusive. First, the naked person is described as a muscular man. That is not a "kid" anymore than a muscular Marine is a "kid". The behavior of the person indicates a person likely under the influence of a drug or of a serious mental illness. Most people and especially "professional", "trained" police officers know that these people need as many as 8 police officers to handle. So, I think there is a lot more going on here than a "kid" acting unusually.

I find it ironic that the PF progressives put so much stock in training and professional status in hand to hand combat skills, but would likely reject a professional opinion by the officer that the officer's life was in danger because of knowledge of drug abusing suspects and their dangers.

This would be useful. I agree.

I don't know if you went to college. The campus police and their offices were the last place we wanted to be.

A hit in the chest did do the trick. Three or four slugs in the legs would do the same, and this dumb kid would still be alive, for what that's worth.

I'm not being quarrelsome for the heck of it. I just don't understand why a shot to the chest is the only remedy here.

I'm on the fence with this one.

It's fair to question why non-lethal force was not first used (mace, taser, baton), or why the officer was unable to call for backup.

On the other hand, as Indofred mentioned, this story might have had quite a different ending had the young man managed to obtain the officer's sidearm.

Another article claims that the young man was indeed a wrestler, but only 5'7" and 135lbs.
