700,000 Americans petition the White House to secede from the US

Because of their reasons for wanting to secede which appears to be mainly because they lost an election and can't handle it like adults. I doubt seriously that they even want to secede in the first place. They think they're going to make a stink that will make everybody hate Obama and Liberals the same way they do - just like the petty, juvenile business owners who pretend to be so upset with the election that they're going to lay off their employees and run their own businesses into the ground.

It would be a whole lot simpler for the secessionists to just find themselves a nice red state in the deep south where there are lots of woods and swamps for the RW militias to feel at home in and lots of people who are used to living in abject poverty and won't be a strain on an unfunded government's budget - there being no income tax in RW Utopia.

nope. it don't add up. anyway you want to slice it an individual state can't afford to seceed from the US. they don't have enough money, nor enough resources to accomplish it. Or do you think it would be a totally free ride.

foolish notion by people who have no clue about the complexities and responsibilities that would devolve to the new country and the costs.

It has nothing to do with nanny states.
It has to do with whether the population of this new country would accept going from a first world standard of living to a third world standard of living over night. If they would accept double digit unemployment. Accept ridiculous interest rates if any consumer debt was available. Accept crippling tax burdens required to pay back all the money owed to the federal government.

I think you need to look up the meaning of "secede". When a state secedes from the Union, they separate from it entirely. They don't get to renounce the government and still enjoy being citizens of the U.S. and keep the privileges and protections provided by the government they renounce. A state that secedes is no longer a part of the country - they're on their own.

except you have to pay for your portion of the debt and you'd have to buy all the federal infrastructure and land. You won't have monetary control. Foreign aid is chicken feed in the grand scheme of things. No welfare, no medicare, no medicaid, no unemployment insurance, no workmens comp. I think things would go on mostly as they were before seeing as how the majority of day-to-day governance is handled by state and local authorities anyway.

Police, fire, sanitation, roads, schools, and commerce are locally financed and managed everyday without big nanny Fed involving itself. You place WAY too much faith in those Washington crooks. If anything, they are an impediment to economic growth and development. IF a state did secede, they would probably just write up a treaty with the US government about helping to finance the military, so nothing would change in that regard. You are just inventing problems to muddy the waters.

 

And once again, it's not simply because 'they lost an election'. It's deeper than that... I've already explained it.

What do you think money comes from washington by some miracle? They steal it from the states.

 

Well, you would no longer have to worry about them exerting their political influence over your state, so you would be able to shape your state as you wished without Federal interference from the GOP. The "Republican" and "Democrat" states could write up treaties to maintain general trade and travel rights but would otherwise be at liberty to decide education, healthcare, drug, marriage, abortion, etc. policies within their jurisdiction. The states could also write up a treaty of mutual defense and support, meaning they would continue to finance the US military and benefit from its protection. Would that be so terrible?

 

It's paid for, but that's beside the point...you don't have to hate anyone to say maybe America lost its way with its spying, drone killing, suspension of the 4th amendment, murder of 16 year old US citizens, global policing, etc and think...maybe this relationship has run its course.

Interestingly, if you look at welfare fraud by state, there isn't a single state (that maintains and publishes state wide stats) that reports welfare fraud rate of more than 5%. (google it yourself, its state by state)
