Trust me, there was no grand strategic vision here for free publicity. A manager at Denny's ain't exactly a Harvard MBA if you catch my drift...

Well, generally it is a good idea to address the topic at hand. IMVHO.

In order to be our servants, they need to be able to do their jobs--which is protecting the public. In order to do that, they use a certain set of tools--just like any other line of work: a plumber shows up with a wrench and a drain snake, and a cop shows up with a gun and handcuffs--those are the tools of the trade. It is not a 'privilege' for them to be armed in public, it is their DUTY. To suggest otherwise, and to suggest that any member of the public is in any danger sitting near a group of armed police is assinine.

Considering what passes for food at Denny's, you might not be far off.

I don't know how it is in Australia, but here in the U.S., a police officer is armed when on duty--period. The gun belt is a part of the uniform, just like the badge and the handcuffs. When an officer is relieved of duty (disciplined) he is told to "turn in his gun and badge." So to tell an on-duty police officer he can't enter an establishment because he is armed is the height of absurdity.

Just do what Rosie O'Donnell does: talk about how bad guns are and then hire your own personal armed bodyguard.

Indeed. Considering Denny's tends towards large populations, the police have ample choices. Around here: IHOP, Mel's Diner and a few mom and pops. It's Denny's losing out on the businness. It's their right but I can imagine a few Denny's around here where the employees can't be happy about this.

Negative advertisement is rarely good. I'll opine, however, that most franchise owners will disregard the Denny's mandate and allow their regular police in with their guns.

Yes. So defend it with your broomstick and curling iron.

No (*)(*)(*)(*). I can see the cops sitting in their cars googling which restaurants they can eat in. Then asking dispatch during a call whether they are allowed to enter the Montoya Buttless Chaps and Frilly Tutu Store.

No they don't. Gun grabbers will talk their way into a bullet or knife-borne sucking chest wound.

Indeed it is - and like a good essay a good thread will meander while points are being made, but never so far as to take the reader's mind off the main idea(s). I admit I meander but I do try to get back on course - eventually.

Is it legal to threaten in US then? Or even on the forum...

Is it legal in US to carry offensive weapons in public? What is the law on that?

It's legal for Police Officers to carry a gun anytime, anywhere including off duty.

Yes, firearms for police officers are a tool of trade. But any business establishment has the right to refuse entry to anyone and if a business establishment refuses entry to police officers because they are carrying their tools of trade then they are perfectly entitled to do so.

Just a couple of other points.

It's usual for detectives to be discreet about displaying weapons or badges. Where it's done openly it sometimes suggests that the "we get police discount" message is being displayed.
And again, if the detectives, or any police officer, are not there on police business then they have no right to demand entry, to remain and to get service.

I have no idea if uniformed police officers are permitted by Denny's in Belleville to eat there. If they are then this may throw some light on this particular incident. If not, then at least the management is being consistent.

I also assume that Denny's is able to deny entry to customers who are armed. If so then that would accord with the rights of individual businesses and is really nothing to get fussed about.

In Australia all on-duty operational police officers are armed. Off duty they do not carry. If an establishment doesn't want an armed police officer on its premises, that officer not being there for official purposes, then they are entitled to ask them to leave.

To the best of my knowledge I can't recall reading or hearing of that happening.

Some years ago in my state there was a fuss about an on duty police officer being seen in a store purchasing socks. He was armed. The issue went to parliament because the then Speaker of the state parliament was involved in fluffing up the issue. For me it was more an issue of shopping on duty rather than being armed but then this was quite some years ago when police openly carrying firearms (on duty) was still a hot issue - now, no-one would raise an eyebrow.

64% of all homicides in Scotland happen in residential dwellings. 63% happened with a sharp object like a knife.

how convenient of you not to mention they were plain clothes detectives....and just how do Deny's employees determine who is detective or just someone who claims to be a detective?...put them in uniform and in a marked car and it becomes a different situation...
