Ah yes Keyes... The guy who lost the Illinois senate elections, ran unsuccessfully for the GOP nomination for president, and despite having ran for a multitude of things has never held elected office.

In the debate vs Obama they are both 'agreeing' on the same thing (outwardly at least), it's just that Keyes logic is rhetoric-laden and convoluted whereas Obama was simply saying (probably very ingeniously) that marriage isn't a civil issue but a religious one - which is completely untrue of course. Keyes seems to think it's fine for two couples who both cannot procreate (the elderly and infertile) to obtain thousands upon thousands of rights whereas a loving same-sex couple should be denied ALL recognition before the law. He is an extremist on the issue who represents a fringe. Hell, even most red states support civil unions.

It's never been a requirement for a heterosexual couple applying for a marriage license that they should be able or willing to procreate. There is no upper age limit and we know it's impossible for a 80- 90 year old couple to concieve a child together. In fact a sterile couple could proclaim openly to registrar that it's impossible for them to pro-create and they'd just shrug and proceed with giving them 1000s of legal rights and protections - the majority of which (hospital visitation, immigration, taxation) have nothing to do with whether or not the are able to procreate together. Keyes said it's "impossible" for a couple consisting of two men or two women to marry based on the procreation thong, but there are heterosexual couples who are identically situated. 1000s of rights for no other reason than their sexuality or genders is wrong and unconstitutional.

It means those left and right, republican and democrat, indepedent and centrist have always rejected his views as being too extreme or out of touch. He has far less validation/credibility than Obama so who is the real loser here?

He's never ran in his home state of New York. He's ran for the Senate in Maryland and Illinois and lost both times by wide margins. Illinois currently has a Republican senator (Mark Kirk), so it's not as if it's impossible for a conservative to win there. Keyes won 27% versus Obama.

Who knows if he'd have won in a red state? He may have struggled in the deep south for obvious reasons... but it was his choice to campaign in traditionally blue states. He failed, and that seems to be the end of the story for him since he's now doing work on behalf of a third-party and hasn't ran for anything since the 2008 Republican presidential primaries.

Yeah, kind of does. Because otherwise he's just a stalking horse that used to be put up by Republicans and not somebody that people actually want to vote for.

Of course it doesn't matter whether Keyes has ever won an election. He probably won't, either, because it is too widely known that he's bat crap crazy.
