Scientists are beginning to report what we have known all along: American food kills. The US is a brutal killer, and the greedy rich in America squeel with pleasure every time they can cost undercut a market with an ever-more-depraved product.

    http://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2013/03/19/sugary-drinks-deaths-research/2001191/

Americans account for about 25,000 obesity-related deaths blamed on over-consumption of sweetened beverages.

Too many sweet drinks to blame for 1 in 100 deaths of obese people globally
Mexico leads the 35 largest nations in deaths tied to surgary drinks; USA is 3rd
78% of these deaths were in low- and middle-income countries
Researchers reported Tuesday that they have linked 180,000 obesity-related deaths worldwide to sugary drinks, including about 25,000 adult Americans.

Overall, 1 in 100 deaths of obese people globally can be blamed on too many sweetened beverages, according to a study presented at an American Heart Association scientific conference in New Orleans. Mexico leads the 35 largest nations in deaths attributable to over-consumption of sugary drinks, with the United States third. Japan, which has one of the lowest per-capita consumptions of sugary drinks, had the fewest sugar-related deaths.

Using data collected as part of the World Health Organization's 2010 Global Burden of Diseases Study, the researchers determined that 78% of these deaths were in low- and middle-income countries.

Of the deaths in 2010 linked to drinking sugar-sweetened soft drinks, fruit juice or sports beverages, 132 000 were from diabetes, 44 000 from cardiovascular disease and 6,000 from cancer.

The most diabetes deaths (38,000) occurred in the Latin America/Caribbean region, with East/Central Eurasia reporting the largest numbers of cardiovascular deaths (11,000) related to over-consumption of sugar-sweetened drinks.

The finding that three quarters of the deaths were from diabetes "suggests that limiting sugary-beverage intake is an important step in reducing diabetes deaths," co-author Gitanjali Singh, a postdoctoral research fellow at the Harvard School of Public Health, said in an interview.

Average consumption varied widely — from less than one 8-ounce drink a day among elderly Chinese women to more than five 8-ounce drinks every day among younger Cuban men.

"Because we were focused on deaths due to chronic diseases, our study focused on adults. Future research should assess the amount of sugary beverage consumption in children across the world and how this affects their current and future health," Singh said.

In a statement, the American Beverage Association, the trade group for the non-alcoholic beverage industry, dismissed the findings as "more about sensationalism than science."

"This abstract, which is not peer-reviewed nor published in a way where its methodology can be fully evaluated, is more about sensationalism than science. It does not show that consuming sugar-sweetened beverages causes chronic diseases such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease or cancer – the real causes of death among the studied subjects. The researchers make a huge leap when they take beverage intake calculations from around the globe and allege that those beverages are the cause of deaths which the authors themselves acknowledge are due to chronic disease."
The Harvard School of Public Health has a fact sheet on "sugary drink supersizing and the obesity epidemic."

Two out of three adults and one out of three children in the United States are overweight or obese, and the nation spends an estimated $190 billion a year treating obesity-related health conditions. Rising consumption of sugary drinks has been a major contributor to the obesity epidemic. A typical 20-ounce soda contains 15 to 18 teaspoons of sugar and upwards of 240 calories. A 64-ounce fountain cola drink could have up to 700 calories. People who drink this "liquid candy" do not feel as full as if they had eaten the same calories from solid food and do not compensate by eating less.
The American Heart Association recommends that based on a 2,000-calories-a-week diet, adults should not consume more than 450 calories from sugar-sweetened beverages.

Monday, Mississippi's Republican governor signed into a law legislation that prohibits cities and counties from restricting or banning the size of soft drinks, or from requiring that restaurants post calorie counts or other nutritional information. Mississippi is the most obese state in the nation.

"It is simply not the role of government to micro-regulate citizens' dietary decisions," Gov. Phil Bryant said in a statement. "The responsibility for one's personal health depends on individual choices about a proper diet and appropriate exercise."

The action came a week after a New York state judge struck down Mayor Michael Bloomberg's attempt to limit most sugary drinks to 16 ounces.

Bloomberg called the Mississippi legislation "ridiculous."

    I know, I know!

Let's pass a law against selling soft drinks bigger than 16 ounces.

I still think it's funny that a Russian is complaining about US death rates when people in the US live a full decade longer than people in Russia, on average.

It's better than "Let's do nothing about the problem... in fact, let's attack the people trying to do something about the problem", which is what your lot's connie conservatives are doing.

Convenient that this "study" would come out right on the heels of bloombergs ban soft drinks initiative.

Ten bucks says this "study" was funded by Bloomberg himself. LOL

    Not buying it.

Just don't drink 8 American fiz pop's per day as your sole source of water. EVERY person who does so grows to develop health problems.

If you AGREE that that is the case, you MUST re-think your position.

I drink on average one soda pop a day. Sometimes two. Those people who drink nothing but soda and nothing else are just stupid and irresponsible. I shouldn't have my option to drink a soda, whether a 16 oz. or not, taken away because a few people are ignorant and careless.

That is ridiculous... If every American corporate food product disappeared from the face of the earth the world would be a better place. That is just a fact.

You are close to understanding that US corporate food products have negative food value. They are novelty items that are not intended in any way to serve as food, and yet they are marketed as food, and what's worse, people eat them.

Does a person have the right to consciously decide to live a shorter life by consuming substances that said person enjoys? Can a person decide to willingly trade off a few years of their life to eat and drink unhealthily? I think that we have a problem on our hands in regards to he American diet and that we have to do something about it. Do set caloric restrictions on fast food, do we teach nutrition to K-12 students, do we make people watch an education video in order to buy cheeseburgers, or do we have a sugar police? I myself want to see measures in place to prevent obesity, but I also do not want to take away a persons liberty.

Wow 286 calories a day, that's pretty strict.

Where in this story does it say these are all American drinks? Its certainly doesn't say it's all from soda pop, e.g. "fruit juice" and "sports drinks"

Maybe Chernobyl Farms brand chicken can take over the market share. Might be a good idea.

It's not ridiculous. Leon Trotsky met with Wall St bankers and arranged a deal for them to finance the October Revolution. Throughout the entire Soviet Union's existence, your country was propped up by food sent by greedy US corporations that were subsidized by the US government (controlled by greedy Wall St bankers). The greediest, richest bastards in the entire world profited for 70 years off your government murdering tens of millions of people while bankrupting itself to finance the unsustainable, failed ideology of socialism.

So are you trying to say that the US continues to be involved in everyone's life? That we're truly the policemen of the world? Or that our politicians are helping the greediest people in the world become even richer?

    Sounds right to me

Yeah, this guy is a joke. Marshal is just a waste of time, except it's occasionally fun to see what the village idiot is rambling about. I love how he jumps to "American food kills" when Americans make up 1/8th of the people the study is talking about, which isn't actually about food but obesity. Of those who died, most drank sugary drinks - but most also didn't workout 2 hours daily. by Marshall's standard, "not working out 2hrs daily kills 180,000!"

No, it's not. Your idea is to limit freedom to extend people's lives by a few years. We're not Russian. We like freedom, and the majority of us already make the choices you and other Comrades want to force on us.

And why connie conservative? That's just stupid and redundant. It'd be like me calling you a Commie Communist.

Which would mean that countries around the world would starve, especially densely populated Asian countries, and even Russia would suffer food shortages. And according to you, it's a fact that starvation and foot shortages would make the world a better place.

Wheres the part where they attribute it to "American food". Fascinating to watch your ideology actually alter your perception of reality.

I can eat whatever I want. And you don't know for sure that I'll get diabetes.

If we're going to ban soda then we need to ban candy bars, doritos. Literally everything except Vegetables and Fruits. Prohibition doesn't work pal.

Maybe I'll be the next Al Capone. Smuggling Ho ho's and Pepsi.

Eat or drink too much of anything and it can lead to health issues, OBVIOUS to anyone with two brain cells to rub together. I need to get me a nice fat grant to point out that people do studies to point out the obvious, oh wait.................

    Prohibition doesn't work.

If it did, then alcohol would still be illegal, and pot would be unobtainable.

Natural selection works, and has for millions of years.

So, let the over-consumers of sugar do their thing and improve the gene pool.
