I once had this kind of talk with a liberal, let's call her Jane:

Me: Favoring status for certain minority groups does not make sense. African American reimbursement is punishing the mass for the crime of the few. A lot of Asians did not even have any slaves even if you trace them 3 generations back.

Jane: But America as a whole, benefited from slavery, without black slaves in the south, America wouldn't have exported that many cottons to Britain and amassed that much wealth.

Me: Despite tons of logical flaws in your argument, are you actually suggesting slavery is good for the economy?

Jane: In a way, yes, it was left there for everyone to see. And that is that.

Me: So, why don't we bring back slavery then? It's good for the economy isn't it?

Slavery is back....it's called working for an employer who can pay you anything it wants with no benefits . And since most employers are exactly the same there is no "quit and get a better job".
And, of course, posters will jump in here and claim there are great jobs out there that people who are willing to work can get and profit by it....but those jobs will become rarer and rarer as employers realize they can screw over their employees anyway they want because they can. There's lots of Americans willing to work for LIVABLE wages and decent working conditions.

Corporations ARE bringing back slavery. They import some from places like China. And Ron Paul thinks that Americans should compete with them to see who will work cheaper. They've even improved on it. Now they don't have to provide housing or health care. Is it good for the economy? The Dow is reaching new heights isn't it?

Were not there yet, since we can all sit around on welfare if we wanted. Once the system cant afford that there will be people willing to work for slave labor rates to survive. Basically become a third world country, with that theres no need for the 'old world slavery'. It would be cheaper to pay someone $2/hour than it would be to feed them, shelter them ect.

Few Americans want to be on Welfare and I have the history of this country to back me up.

People will be, and are now, FORCED to work for slave wages because it benefits the wealthy.

We need the biggest class of Americans, the middle class, to have good paying jobs with benefits so those people can put their money back into the economy which spurs the economy. If everyone is so poor and desperate that they can barely afford the necessities (IF they can) then who puts money into the economy?

Why do you think Henry Ford paid his workers so well? It wasn't because he was a nice guy....he knew that if he paid them enough they could afford to buy a Ford. They could afford other things, too, like a new house, home repairs like paying a plumber, buying more groceries. So the construction worker, plumber and the grocer could afford to but a Ford.

Henry didn't want to depend on the Wealthy to support him, he wanted to sell lots of cars...and he did....and then there were more jobs ....

Slavery was bad for the economy, slaves cannot buy things because they don't earn money - thus the wealth is wasted on things the slave owners wanted. And industrialized economy cannot run on slavery.

Thank you for speaking my heart.

Industrialized nations grow by catering the new demands from middle class of a healthy size.

But good luck trying to make liberals like Jane understand that.

Try to elaborate your definition of "Slavery".

Getting paid handsomely without having to go to work spells nobility, not freedom.

And why is Greece failing so miserably?

Our current SLAVE LABOR in the form of the working poor is much cheaper than the other kind of slavery where you have to pay for slaves, shipping, middlemen, three meals a day, snacks, guards around the clock, healthcare, housing, clothing, entertainment, chains, shackles, etc. Do the math!

Dude, for the last time...... start your own company if you don't want to work for somebody else. Otherwise, get over it. It's not that bad.

There is no need to bring it back. A system akin to slavery still exists through which the privileged can get unearned wealth. At first you may not see the human face on it like with chattel slavery and its effects are a little "diluted", shall I say, in western countries, but it becomes pretty obvious once you understand it and the human face becomes all too apparent. The individual victims of it may not suffer as much as a victim of chattel slavery, but it's an injustice nonetheless, is far more widespread, and in extreme cases it's hard to tell the difference between it and chattel slavery. I'm talking about the system of landowner privilege.

Maybe this will give you an idea:

I'm talking about classical slavery, not wage slavery.

They're not all too different. The less bargaining power wage earners have left the more it resembles "classical" slavery. Once wage earners have no bargaining power left they are forced into subsistence wages, which is essentially just enough for them to survive so they can continue to produce wealth and hand it over to their parasitic privileged masters.

There is a limit to how low wages will be allowed to drop - the capitalists need us to have enough money to buy back the products we produce.

Slavery is when you don't own the product of your labour and you have no say over it's value, where it will be sold , how it will be used and by who.

    What is this about?

Greece failing? you don't make any sense .

    Thank you for your reply.

Please name the system, existed or not, that allows you to own the product of your labor, and you have the say of its value, and it shall never be sold, and only you can use it.

May I suggest you read some Adam Smith, who explained quite eloquently why carpenters, blacksmith and needle makers make each others' life much, much easier, not harder.

Don't play dumb. I know where you are getting. Don't try to evade.

The GDP of China, a developing country, is a staggering 9% for the last decade or so.

    The GDP of Greece, a whopping -4% for 2010, -2% for 2009.

But I'm not naive enough to rely on the power of truth and evidence when debating a typical European left.

System? every self employed owns the product of his labour in form of material property or fair compensation ... you see where i am getting?

Adam Smith has very little to do with this "dire economic situation"

Seriously i don't understand probably because i am not an English language native but if by chance this is a reference to welfare as a communist i am against charity , you don't work-you don't eat , no exceptions.

I am not typical LOL you know too little about European politics probably.

Greece was created in 1832 and it had 1/6 of the land and 1/10 of the population it has now , since then we have got bankrupted 5 times, fought several wars and lost like half of them , faced famines and occupations and millions of refugees and political strife yet the country has grown in size and significance so where is the fail?
If we skip the country part and come to Greeks as a nation he have faced many disasters in the last 4000 years yet we are still here alive and kicking so do not worry about us worry about yourself.
