Sorry polly, the whole thing is just one big (*)(*)(*)(*)ing lie! They have lied about everything else, and you have been very accurate in this forum in pointing it out. So why didn't you see that Social Security is a lie too? And this betrayal by Obama just shows the truth of something else we have known for a long time, we
re being (*)(*)(*)(*)ed by both the Republicans and the Democrats. Get it? If you work and pay taxes you are going to be (*)(*)(*)(*)ed by the government every minute you live! What we need to do now is to stop working, stop paying taxes and start getting as much free stuff from the government as we can. Everything else is stupid!

So those seniors with ample resources and incomes from other accounts and retirement, who in no way need the SS checks they're getting and spending as "fun money" dining out and going to casinos [you wouldn't believe how many of them do the latter], are going to keep this disposable income while seniors and disabled who actually need it and have no other means are going to take a pay cut??

Means test SS recipients. There's your savings. The program was named Social SECURITY, as in a safety net, not 'Social Retirment Fund" as in a guarantee.

I'm trying to understand what's going on here... Weren't many of the detractors here previously screaming that Obama needs to cut entitlement spending? Wow, Krugman gets it right, again:

    - - - Updated - - -

Same (*)(*)(*)(*) as before, but even better: it's not actually taking any money from Medicare.

You can split fine-hairs all day long, but REALITY is that for almost 80 years this mandatory system takes your money for a retirement benefit (among other things) by law. You have no choice, except to join some cushy teachers' union, or "civil servant" or public employee retirement system (which is also mandatory for everybody employed in those things).

But this new Obamanite Democrat scam will use a manipulation of the CPI algorithms, which few understand, but it kind of boils down to this...

You shouldn't get a certain amount of Social Security money any more because, instead of buying beef, you'll buy pork if it's cheaper! And, if chicken is cheaper than pork you'll buy it! Hey -- and if DOG FOOD is cheaper than chicken, and the government thinks that, maybe, you'll eat it, too, then they can cut your benefit down even further! Using the same logic, they can probably prove that if eating NOTHING is cheaper than DOG FOOD, you'll opt for that -- and then they wouldn't need to pay you anything! You worked and paid into this lousy, ****ing fraudulent system at gunpoint, all your life, and you'll get ****ed out of even the little bit you're supposed to get when you retire!

And you think that this dirty underhanded fraud is something that only a Republican with a heart as hard as flint could dream up, except that it has come straight from President Barack Obama himself! How 'bout it, all you socialist hypocrites -- it this FAIR? Any of you got anything to say about how your wonderful President Friend-of-the-Common-Man is coming out with this blatantly unfair scheme to screw Amercan taxpayers who have paid into SS all their lives?!

The reality is pretty simple, we are all going to have to keep a little less and work a little more to get through these economic times. It is not going to fix itself, and to wait for some special technology breakthrough is folly. Yes it is simple, but it most likely has the greater chance of success. The world is also in a recession, we are going to have help ourselves and complaining about other people is not going to solve it either.

If you want to blame me fine, but it won't fix it.

Social security is NOT "WELFARE"; workers are FORCED to pay into it their ENTIRE LIVES, for our OWN RETIREMENT(S). It is OUR MONEY...not the Nanny Gov's.

I'm not blaming you...that solves nothing. And, the Social Security is fully-funded, exactly as it is, until the year 2032. Hell, most of the Baby Boomers will be dead by then, ending a big draw on the fund. But even if it didn't, and we needed money to meet the obligations, then the government should go get it from the same place it got hundreds of billions of dollars, over and over, to "rescue" all those criminal investment-banker bastards who were "too big to fail"!

We continue these "rescues", and to this day the Federal Reserve System continues to plow FORTY BILLION DOLLARS every month into toxic mortgage-backed securities to make the bankers prosperous. But here's Obama, advocating a big screwing to people who have been forced to pay into SS all their working lives -- while we continue to "rescue" these ********s? Surely there's no genuine Liberal in the country who would approve of that!

Well times are tough, and I'm sorry, but we are all going to have to sacrifice some more. I just don't see what else is there, and this is starting to drag on too long to make me feel comfortable. Yeah, sorry, but I mean everyone, some of us will even have to chip in more. It's not pleasant, but no one has anything else and everyone is pushing it for themselves down the road. If the political hit needs to be taken, it needs to be taken, that is part of the sacrifice.

And yet, whenever someone suggests lifting the payroll tax to make SS solvent till at least 2075, its nothing but naysaying. So which is it? Is SS an entitlement that needs to be cut, or should it be reformed to make it more solvent by asking more from people?

Based on that analysis the voters are to blame for the entire problem because they don't have enough sense to protect their own interests.

As the skeptical friend said to the man who invented the feces-powered helicopter, "This (*)(*)(*)(*) will not fly". Stop pretending that Obama somehow came up with the idea of cutting "earned entitlements" on his own - this has been a republican proposal from day one. You cannot blame Obama proposing this on the democrats. This is a compromise, and this is a further sign that Obama isn't some radical leftist, but a centrist who is terrible at politics. Pollycy, this thread is intentionally dishonest and you need to either pay more attention or lie less.

Obama will cut into entitlements that people have been forced to pay into their whole lives, but will continue to redistribute wealth to bankers, insurance companies, and other big businesses.

It's not shocking though, he's been a corporatist from day one.

If you expect someone to contribute a six or seven figure sum into a 'retirement plan' that will pay him back a very small 5 figure sum wayyy out in the future, you need to call it a tax loud and clear. You need to remove all pretense of insurance or security or retirement plan. No Security, all Social.

Its a shame all those baby boomers aborted their children.....

Why should I? I'm not upset with the current laws, someone else here was complaining. I could care less whether they change them or not.

    What a crock.

Make damn sure you don't give them medical treatment for free, or $1800 tax rebates for nothing, social security, reduced tuition, etc.

In fact, maybe we should have a good hard look at the 14th Amendment...

I'm not sure I love Obama. I tend to toggle between thinking he's doing great all things considered, and then thinking he could have done much better and wasted an historical opportunity, in 2008, with Mother Theresa approval and voters giving him total control of Congress.

But indeed I'll ignore any Dems or Reps who talk about cutting SS, since the blowback from the Boomers and others will be immediate and overwhelming, sending them backpedaling instantly, just as they did when the Paul Ryan budget was considered ... for about a nanosecond, until the GOP ran for cover.

The People still rule the joint, when we have mind to. The Vox Populi trumps all the lobbyist dollars in the world, near instantly at times.
