Yes, you heard right. Obama supports voter ID, but in Kenya, not here. The Obama administration sent millions of dollars to Kenya to set it up.

I guess what’s good for the goose is not good for the Kenyan? In a strange turn if events, the Obama administration has thrown their support, and some cash, behind voter ID efforts-in Kenya!

The fact sheet, entitled, “U.S. Support for Strengthening Democratic Institutions, Rule of Law, and Human Rights in Sub-Saharan Africa,” touts the $53 million spent to help 500,000 people gain legal identification for voting which is a prerequisite for voting in Kenya. The fact sheet begins:

“Civil society and independent media play a critical role in any vibrant democracy. Across sub-Saharan Africa, the United States supports efforts to ensure civil society organizations and independent media can organize, advocate, and raise awareness with governments and the private sector to improve political processes, transparency, and government performance.”

It is hilarious that the Obama Administration still has the gall to espouse the virtue of a transparent government when they, themselves, are more cagey than the Kremlin.

“In Kenya, the $53 million Yes Youth Can program empowers nearly one million Kenyan youth to use their voices for advocacy in national and local policy-making, while also creating economic opportunities. In advance of Kenya’s March 2013 general elections, Yes Youth Can’s ‘My ID My Life’ campaign helped 500,000 youth obtain National identification cards, a prerequisite to voter registration, and carried out a successful nationwide campaign with Kenyan civic organizations to elicit peace pledges from all presidential aspirants.”

Yes, that’s correct- the Obama Administration is proud of the fact that they have been able to help Africa in their efforts to create democratic elections. It’s a laudable effort.

As far as I understand it, the voter ID requirement is something the Kenyan government set beforehand, and the aid we're giving is to make it easier for Kenyans to obtain the IDs.

That's a little different from saying that having the ID requirement itself is best for voting.

Granted, it is rather close to being a hypocritical sentiment.

Oh, I dislike this administration as much as the next guy, but facilitating democracy under a countries laws just isn't a bad thing. They need id's to vote there... we want people to participate in the democratic process... makes good sense for any administration to make that move.

Now if you find that they were only giving them to specific groups... well then I could pile on... otherwise... nothing to see here.

It makes perfect sense, actually. Obama didn't give the money so that Kenya can set up the system; he gave it to ensure that citizens will be able to obtain an ID. That's what the whole controversy was about here--concerns that some people wouldn't be able to get an ID. According to your article, he's making an effort to ensure that doesn't happen in Kenya, where he doesn't have a say in the laws.

I don't see it as hypocritical, once you get passed the spin. It seems to me it more like, "Hey, maybe we can't stop them from creating voter ID laws, but we can make sure everyone is able to get one."

Seems to make sense to me.

I am all for voter ID if the government provides free and reasonably convenient ID to every eligible American voter.

If we are in the middle of a sequester, where we are laying off policemen, firemen, etc. in our own country, why in the heck are spending $53 million in Kenya??????

Seems we can only afford to give other countries millions to get ID's not Americans.

During dunce-boy's $100 million dollar vacation to Africa, dunce boy mentioned something about $7 billion US from government and $9 billion US from "private sources" going to AFRICA for energy infrastructure? Is this guy insane? He wastes 1 TRILLION DOLLARS on fraud instead of infrastructure in the USA and the USA is going to let Forrest Gump get away with THIS?
