Why are so many moderators quitting? I'm worried something bad is about to happen, like a radical change in the forum's rules that will clamp down on free speech.

I've been on other forums, and most of them I've been banned because they do not allow free speech and I refused to bow to their fascistic restrictions.

But I've been on this forum for years and I've never had a problem except for an occasional warning or infraction.

But now I'm worried that's about to change.

Please tell me nothing bad is about to happen to this forum.

We're all waiting on bated breath for the royal decree. You'll have to remain patient.

I don't know, but chances are because they got tired of doing it. I'm sure going to miss them though. Those were the mods when I first signed on, and you don't forget stuff like that.

It is rather strange that three of them have left in one week.

    Seriously......so what?

Look- I am hoping that the moderators are just done. Or maybe they are fed up- certainly I have been tempted to walk away from this board for certain reasons.

But what is the worse case?

If I don't like these boards, I will just stop coming here. Not as if I will lose my car or job over changes here.

Certainly I am not going to start telling everyone the sky is falling.

It's not a big deal to have mods of a fast-paced board get burned out from doing it over a long period of time. And turn-over is a good thing. Fresh perspectives are needed in some instances. And if the board ends up being something you no longer like, there are thousands of other boards out there to participate in and are struggling for members to get things hopping. LOL

Moderation is a taxing position, and eventually begins to become unpleasant to everyone. Between the time commitment, stress induced by critique, eyestrain of excessive and continuous reading, and frustration....it gets to you over the years. The longest stint on any forum I subjected myself to was 7 yrs....and decided it was time, but it was a great experience. I suggest we all take the words of those who left to heart, as it is clear they simply wanted the rest.

It is very unlikely this forum is headed in any direction other than improvement, as it seems structured in a way that is self preserving of the freedoms we all enjoy here. Wish the leaving staff well, and focus on helping to keep this going. We all have ownership here...and responsibility.

Look at the bright side. Some of these former mods were the best posters on the forum. If they get back to posting, the forum will be greatly improved.

The mods when I came in were Sporklord, truebrit, Senaxflatulus and JP5. I think Munko and raytri got to be mods shortly after I got here. People come and go but minds never change. ;)

They're not obligated to, nor is any private entity. Anymore than a Catholic Church is obligated to perform a gay wedding.

Free speech does not apply to private entities, and was never intended to.

    That's a pretty silly comparison.

I can't imagine how anyone can bear to do the job, and I think we should all thank the mods for doing it so extremely well.

I hear there's a new hardass, free speech hating, stalinist in charge around here now. Maybe that's why.

Free speech (1st Amendment) does not apply to private businesses. Overly restrictive rules are no fun, but you aren't 'entitled' to say whatever you want. I'm just clarifying that because I find it silly and anti-business to claim that the 1st Amendment has something to do with private businesses.

I don't post on forums that I feel are too restrictive. What I do run into occasion on forums are rouge mods who unilaterally delete/ban members simply because they saw something they don't like, but coming to a forum and then whining about the posted rules themselves is pretty juvenile.

I don't think he was implying there was a 1st Amendment situation happening here. Obviously a site owner can decide what speech he wants to allow on his own site. However, the problem is that for years PF was promoted as a site where, as long as the rules are followed, the spirit of free speech is encouraged. That's certainly been my experience throughout the majority of my time here, and I apparently joined at a time where they were more strict than they used to be.

Over the past month there has been a dramatic and noticeable shift in policy. Apparently there are new rules being worked on that should be revealed any day now. Having so many mods quit in such a short period of time is very suspicious.

I agree on that - I do have a problem (with sites in general) with rouge mods simply deleting content or banning posters on a whim simply because they saw something they don't like. Or when the rules are too vague to the point that you don't know when you're crossing the line, then log in one day and wind up with a ban.

My point was just that private sites' rules don't really have to abide by 'free speech', maybe I misinterpreted what he said - I'm not a fan of extremely one-way biased or censorship-heavy sites myself, so I tend to avoid those.

I won't name the mod but in a PM I was basically told that there's a "serious crackdown" happening. Not sure of the details but I heard a rumor that the site lost a sponsor(s) due to some of the more inflammatory postings here, that might be the cause of it.

There's a couple sites I've visited where they have a private "dungeon" forum not visible to non-members where the rules are much less strictly enforced (usually the only rules are like "no porn, no threats, no commercial spam/viruses" - that's it) - maybe the mod team would consider creating something like that.

The Hole...or Dungeon, does seem to help members blow off steam.......and is rather entertaining on it's own.

Not a bad Idea.....I would even consider becoming the "Dungeon Master" if they decide to incorporate it.

There was a thread about changes coming to the forum a few weeks ago. It has crossed my mind that might be the reason for mod's resigning.

Have you seen any Amazon.com ads lately? They used to display the ads in between thread posts - I haven't seen any. I suspect that some of the postings my have caused them to lose a sponsor, so they're tightening the reins here.
