Slavery was a pretty good deal for blacks. They got three square meals a day, a place to sleep, hard work that builds character, and a guiding hand to keep them out of trouble.

They should be thankful we didn't ship them back to Africa.

I haven't a racist bone in my body, but even I can admit that this is almost certainly true. If you think that living in an African hut and being forced through necessity to work as hard as they would have had to in order to even subsist, and be in constant danger of being killed by one of dozens of predators able to kill you with one bite, sting, or squeeze,...was any better than American slavery, you're probably not thinking very clearly.

If you had asked a 2nd generation slave, ---who heard stories of how hard it was in Africa, and what dung beetles tasted like, and how it felt to have a leopard's claws rake your back in place of a rare (hopefully) "master's" whip rake your back---if you asked him if he wanted free transportation back to his dad's or grandfather's native village, I'm thinking that he'd probably decline the offer. Maybe I'm wrong.

Why should anyone be proud of passing civil rights for the uncivilized? Because your teachers and the media told you so? Because decadent Sweden gave MLK the Nobel Prize? You worshipful peasants don't have any idea about what was really going on. The majority of the electorate opposed this silly delusion; therefore, they were disenfranchised by it. The ruling class liked that; this was just a set up so the 1% could get away with dispossessing the majority of people economically. A nice test case of the will of the people and this "representative" system flunked.

Where they would have become a lion's lunch. Africa is horrible enough now; it was even worse back then.

It was worse back then because Arabs and europeans were on a mission to wipe out Israel [through slavery and colonializm] so they could take their place. Now we got Europeans and Arabs in Palestine bombing eachother and both pretending to be Israel, exactly like it was predicted in the good book.

Slavery was NEVER about money, never about getting Free labour for 400 years, never about cutting out the Arabs trading.

It was all about stealing a legacy. The only way they could steal a heritage was through slavery, change the names, change the culture of so called African Americans.

Well, since we don't live in a vacuum and time moves forward, you're standing on the shoulders of your father and his father and his father etc.

Things accomplished before you were born affect you.

Among MANY other things slaves built railroads for free. This gave us great infrastructure for it's time and at a VERY low cost, allowing us to build a lot of them. Businesses used these railroads to transport goods on much more inexpensively than horse and buggy. This generated profits. Increased profits led to increased business which led to more investment, which leads to more businesses, etc. etc. ...

And finally after centuries you wind up in today, in your house, in one of the wealthiest countries on earth, complaining about how the super rich are screwing the common man while billions of people outside our nation would give their left leg to have the opportunity to have it as good as you.

Slave labor built America in the early 1800's, so while the thread title seems to bemoan how bad Americans (who weren't slaves) have had it due to slavery, I would say the opposite is more true. It's why there was talk of reparations. The only thing stopping it from happening was by the time we got around to talking about them all the slaves had died, and it didn't get much political traction to give money to their great great great grandchildren, but the fact remains: Without the labor the slaves accomplished we would not be the power we are today. Slave Labor positively affected EVERYONE (that wasn't a slave) from THEN until NOW including YOU.

Calling people of certain ethnicities, "savages" is a very racist statement.

Their ethnicity was coincidental to the level of development of their civilization.

Its not my fault Africa was what it was. And still coincidentally is.

    Idiotic, idiotic, idiotic!--not “idiot”.

Is that the reason I can’t call a dwarf a midget?!?

Is that the reason I can’t go to Starbucks without wearing clothes?

NOW you put the ‘ic’ in? Democrat, democrat, democrat!!

    Fascistic, Fascistic! The “ic” IN!!!

Hmmm. I never thought of that.

That’s an odd way to put it. We would have stumbled over something else. It is a very good observation.

A little gratitude goes a long way.

    -------------

Now, I have not read the good book and I KNOW that is not in it. Give me the page number and book. Please.

Slavery was not a good idea in any case, but I think the problem stems more from the interruption of the ability to form real, stable, communities rather than because of anything blacks are doing. Immigrants generally form enclaves of their own kind, they shop their own stores, they eat at their own restaurants, that kind of thing. So what happens is that the immigrant works for the wider economy and brings that pay to his own community, and thus transfers the wealth to that community. Without that, you essentially are a conduit, sending your paycheck right back out. Work at Kmart, shop at Walmart, and your people don't get any benefit from your work. Work at Kmart and spend your money at Lakisha's Five and Dime, and you grow the black community. But it appears (outsider here) that this doesn't seem to happen with blacks the way it does with most immigrants. Perhaps that's a way forward.
