Don't Europeans know that we allow blacks to enjoy capitalism in the United States? Why a liberal like Oprah is under no obligation to give her millions to the poor, and she hasn't. She doesn't face a 75% income tax as exists in France nor should she. She is free to keep her wealth for herself like the Obamas or Michael Moore. Leftists are not forced to give their wealth to humanity as a whole, and they certainly do not voluntarily in these free United States of America.
The more I hear about this the more I think it WAS a misunderstanding and Winfrey blew it out of proportion.
meh, the clerk prob meant the bag was overpriced. everyone knows women of every color hate being overcharged. i can't imagine a clerk in a store patronized by Tina Turner was thinking that a black American woman got to Switzerland by a Greyhound bus.
I'm amazed the clerk didn't know who Oprah Winfrey was. She should at least be reprimanded for not having a good knowledge of wealthy female celebrities, given it was a very upscale shop.
Not so. A black guy who was a painter, went by himself to an expensive restaurant in DC downtown. His name (lets call him) was Charlie.I knew this guy when he did some work in my area. He had a great personality, always giving change to anyone who asked him for a buck or two. One day coming out from the liquor store a woman asked him for change and he looked at his wallet and noticed that he only had a five dollars bill, no loose single dollar bills... no other change in his packets... I saw him with pain in his face giving her his last five bucks... but he did it. This is one of the kind guys that are hard to find as buddies. The waiter in that restaurant was very polite and took him to a nice table. He went to this restaurant because his girlfriend broke up with him, and he didn't want to go home back to his wife and children... yes, he also was a cheater... that was his private life... right? Well, instead of crying and getting drunk, he decided to have a great meal celebrating his loss. He asked for a good wine and some french dish with veal poured with some extravagant seasoning. Everything was fine until a white dude and his wife came to the same restaurant. This white guy saw him and when he was seated near Charlie, this guy whispered something to the waiter. The waiter came to Charlie and with extreme courtesy asked him to seat at another table. Charlie played the game. He let the waiter to take him to a table in a corner, far away from the white dude, and he was served over there. The wine came, the foor arrived, and Charlie let the waiter to open the bottle... After that, Charlie standing up said that he didn't want the food anymore and left the restaurant. Sure, there is no rasicm in the US... right... By the way, I heard that there is a town in the South, I think the name of this town is Maurice or Mauricio... is a town owned by a family, when you enter to this town you must present yourself to the owner and tell your intentions over there... passing by... how many days... etc. In this small town, the front entrance of the tavern is for everybody, well, almost everybody...because blacks wanting to have a drink must do it in another room which entrance is the back door... All of these happened around 10 years ago or more... My hope is that things have changed for better...

It might have been a misunderstanding---retreiving a bag from under a security screen might seem complicated no matter who was asking to see it. But I would have taken it badly and I thought Oprah dealt with it classy. So many celebs act like children in tantrums nowdays. But honestly---if asylum seekers are such a problem to the society there---I don't understand why they simply stop taking them in!
Mostly assumptions, here. So 'charlie' assumed he was being racially targeted in DC? In a restaurant frequented by congresspersons, lobbyists, & the ruling elite? Many of whom are black? That waiter wouldn't have honored any such request, but would have asked the white couple to leave immediately. It is more likely that he stank from drinking & carousing around.. or maybe he was blubbering over his dom perignon over the breakup, & the couple didn't want to witness that. This is circumstantial evidence at best, & it is very prejudicial to assume racism for single problem that happens in life. 10 years ago? 2003, in washington dc? Things have not changed that much. It is still a progressive bastion of political correctness. I highly doubt that there was any racism here at all. It makes a cool story for the race baiters, though.. got to keep an illusion of rabid racism active all the time.

The Leftists in Europe are faced with the vexing problem of secular humanist socialism not working very well in the real world. In SHS theory, the Europeans should be able to let large numbers of third world immigrants into the country and everything will go swimmingly because we are just one big, happy human race after all with common cultures and universal human values..........
The Swiss shop clerk could barely speak English and she simply could not describe how much the bag was worth to Oprah Winfrey in English. The $38,000 Tom Ford bag may be too expensive for anyone and it looks like a cheap black bag that only costs few hundred dollars. Oprah should not expect she would be treated like a royalty anywhere she goes and the shop clerk was doing her best to help an American tourist.
I'm thinking the purse was just for display, PR and media attention...they never expected anyone to buy it. It was in some kind of security display, it might not even have been possible for employees to get it out. And yes, I thiink there was a language issue. I'm thinking when the poor saleperson was saying "It's tto expensive" what she meant was "It's only for display, it's not for sale, it too expensive for anyone to really buy".
A few rich liberals giving all their wealth to the poor wouldn't begin to make a dent in the problem. What WOULD help is the restoration of the levels of progressive taxation in effect during our country's most prosperous days.

Agreed about being blown out of proportion. It could easily have been more about what Winfry was wearing rather than the color of her skin. If she went into the shop asking to look at a $38,000 purse while wearing a sweatsuit and flip-flops, the clerk may have thought Winfry couldn't afford such a purse.
This reminds me of something I heard recently. There is this wealthy businessman who donates millions of dollars to the university my brother works at but this guy wears plain clothes, isn't exactly clean shaved and you would not pick him as someone who has wealth by his mannerisms. He also only has a high school education, maybe not even that if I remember correctly. Anyway he got escorted from the university grounds by security on his way to see the VC because they thought he was a vagrant or something. He had a laugh about it and the VC made sure the security knew who he was was in the future.
