So, being able to cash a check, open a bank account, legally board an aircraft or train and vote isn't enough reward to justify someone going through the effort of getting a free ID - something every responsible American has already done?

Other - only if the government provides the IDs free of any fees to every citizen in the country, and brings them to the recipients rather than demanding they jump through any procedural or expense-inuring hoops to procure them. Anything short of that will cheat many Americans of their right to vote.

Preferably we would first expand the suffrage to include felons, folk of ages 16-17, and non-citizens residing in the U.S. so that they could be provided with valid voter ID cards, too.

People who are physically able and financially solvent enough to travel aren't the people without IDs.

If they are going to do it there needs to be a grace period of at least a year and public awareness campaigns done to get the word out. There would need to be some around the clock places open where the IDs can be issued because not everyone can afford to take time off of work in the middle of the day to go get one. Voter IDs must be free. And something would need to be done to accommodate the elderly. The elderly who can’t get around well tend to absentee vote or are driven to voting stations by various organizations. Similar accommodations would need to be made for them to get an ID as a disproportionate number of those without IDs are elderly.

But all of that costs money and I am just not convinced there is enough of this type of voter fraud to justify such expenses. But hey, wasting money on stupid stuff is what we are great at.

The Dem argument is not that it will cripple their constituency but that it will disfranchise millions of voters who don't have ID (for a variety of reasons). Poor people vote Republican, too, after all.

For people who have lived 80 years without ID, those aren't exactly big deals.

They already have a bank account, have had it for decades, you don't need ID to board a train, you just get on, you need a ticket later for the conductor, you can buy that for cash. You can get on an airplane without ID, it's just a longer process.
And they've been voting for 60 years without ID, why do they want it now?

But maybe you feel every American should have identity papers, you know like Nazi Germany, so we'll be free....yeah, that's the ticket, IDs required, for freedom...

As a Democrat I think there should be an ID, a national ID, it would go with your health card for Obama care, social security number all sorts of information and lastly it would be an ID to vote with, online polls open 2 weeks before elections.

WHAT republicans hate this idea? You started it.

Started it by insisting that there is voter fraud when there is none however it would solve the problem that republicans seem to have with voters who don't vote for them.
