Ummmm ........ he just accumulated the majority of votes from the folks in Oz, nonsense about "parliamentary" BS not withstanding.

He would appear to have his arse covered just fine on climate nonsense !

The folks down under are wising up to the stupidity of "climate change". They just said so en masse.

It was a massive issue. Labor did a 360 on the issue twice and it was one of the key reasons for both leadership changes from Rudd to Gillard who went to an election with the promise she wouldn't pass it then back from Gillard to Rudd with the promise it would be disbanded.

    • Social Security is not a conservative policy.
    • IRS is not a conservative policy.
    • Progressive tax system is not a conservative policy.
    • EPA is not a conservative policy.
    • Unemployment insurance is not a conservative policy.
    • Food stamps is not a conservative policy.
    • Welfare is not a conservative policy.
    • Disability insurance is not a conservative policy.
    • Public school system is not a conservative policy.
    • Bailouts is not a conservative policy.
    • ObamaCare is not a conservative policy.
It looks like the only policies that have been damaging America in the last 100 years has been left-wing >>>MOD EDIT: INSULT<<< policies.

Sigh! But THIS election it was not mentioned much. There was far more focus on "boat people" and a sagging economy

Well at least you admit the economy was sagging under the Labor party.

I disagree. It was mentioned plenty in my electorate and for me the carbon tax and other economic policy debacles under Labor were much larger issue than the boat people distraction Labor tried to win votes on with their almost comically strong stance and desperation on the issue. I do agree labor believed this to be a massive issue, I simply don't agree it actually was. Most people cared more about job killing policies like the carbon tax in my view and the carbon tax and the sagging economy are entropically tied together. The following poster is from our left wing party...

I thought the silliness of a carbon tax was one of the big reasons why Labor fell?

I have read that increased utilities prices did cause the tax to be unpopular. The actual Australians would be able to answer that better than me. A vast majority still believe in human caused climate change. To my knowledge all of the major political parties do not deny it. I believe that man is changing the climate as well, I just do not think we can do much about it without a serious reduction in the human population.

Id suggest most Australians look at climate change not so much as how to stop it or reverse it, but can we help slow it down, and what are going to be left to deal with. There is paleo evidence that a feature of Australian climate is extreme fluctuations, droughts that last 100 years. 3 hundred year floods in the same town in 5 years. So even if the worlds climate remained stable, Australia would still be screwed lol

I think you're right. The Liberal Party was started out of the collapse of another conservative party in Australia. I think it took the name "Liberal" from the economic ideas of the classical economists and had a sort of mild laissez-faire attitude towards the economy. At the time, or I think perhaps just before, of its creation there was a lot of pressure for nationalisation of industries and certainly during the Great Depression there was a lot of discussion about nationalising various industries. Labor tried it under Chifley (going from memory here, could be mistaken) with the banks and that was a debacle. During the 30s there was also a huge problem in Labor with a fellow called Jack Lang who was a very interesting politician. Anyway, yes, I think the Liberal Party was built on liberal economics and social conservatism. It may be instructive to realise that the Liberal Party has never won government at the federal level by itself, it has always had to be in coalition with a rural agrarian socialist party various called the Country Party and then the National Party. Neither the Liberal Party nor the National Party is capable of gaining government outside of coalition. The only single party in recent years that has done so is Labor - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Australian_federal_elections

In even the most far-flung provinces of the Roman Empire they kept an eye on what was happening in Rome.

It isn't sagging, the economy is very strong here, it's News Corp and the Coalition which uses the term "sagging" - Bower used the quotation marks to indicate that it's essentially a bull(*)(*)(*)(*) line.

There are a number of reasons Labor lost. I think the first is the turmoil over the leadership. As they say here "disunity is death". Rudd was drafted as a populist candidate for the leadership position, some of the pundits say he got the job because Labor was sick and tired of his whingeing. He lead a really good campaign which saw the Coalition tossed and Howard, the sitting PM, lose his seat. Howard was perceived as a liar and paid the price for it. Rudd was a hopeless PM. He was sacked by his own party room because he was unbearable. Gillard got the job. She had some very crappy advice about how to present herself as PM and then there was the blue over the carbon price and alleged promises. I guarantee the average Australian doesn't know what it is and how it works, but they know propaganda when they swallow it and it was handed out in globs by the right wing media (which is about 95% in Australia).

Rudd white-anted Gillard from the backbench and kept it up even when in Cabinet. He was brought back by a few spineless bastards who thought he could save the government by his own appeal to the bogan classes. Look at his concession speech last night, he won his seat, the loss wasn't the tsunami being predicted, his ego was saved, he was happy for himself. That's who he is. He should quit parliament for the good of the Labor Party. So the Labor Party and in particular Rudd lost the election despite our economy being in excellent shape and the fantastically good policy work carried out by a minority government.

Now we have the Coalition. We shall see what happens.

Sorry theres no way we'd be democrats. You'd call our conservatives a national threat, extremists/ terrorists ect...... like you do the teaparty.

Now we dont mind supplying a healthy safety net that is true, but it must be affordable. A huge part of the campaigning was are economic responsibility, deficits and the balancing of budgets..... Democrats, really?

Abbott will spread the independent schools system, breaking central control over the public system and allows for more choice. Some schools might be more set up towards marine biology ect. Closer to the Charter Schools Obama is suing? He had in the past indicated making allocating more money per student in private schools making them more affordable to more people - not a voucher but much more freedom of choice for average people.

Borders: Previously conservatives stopped the boats. It is a big issue here we dont want to be flooded by third world welfare sponges. Labor messed with the policies and started them up again, Labor want to let in around 70% refugees as well. We demand secure borders, control over who lives here and we sure hate the leftists trying white guilt us for boat people drowning.

We hate political correctness, Paul Murray had a great little segment on this the other night. Leftists trying to hang Abbott for saying a candidate had sex appeal backfired. Murray discussed how most of us hate the PC jokes about race/ colour ect, most of it friendly jest, real hate should be called out. But PC has been backfiring on the left. I dont know how big that is, but he's the political radio show host and mentioned it on his Sky News show as part of the lefts demise.

Abbott in his acceptance speech said he understood the govts role to not intrude. He reduced tax on companies. Carbon tax, well didnt want a new tax full stopped it was forced on us and Labor/ Greens have now paid for that lie.

True he introducing a full paid maternity leave scheme, but that is a levy applied to the largest companies which is exactly the same the tax reduction they receive (they get 1.5% discount and get 1.5% levy added). Im pretty people can see this really only benefits women that work as a work place entitlement, addresses some child related earning differentials and makes life easier for families. Get our birth rates up the less immigrants we need, the less demographic change. A hardly giving to those that dont contribute, exactly the opposite in fact- its like the anti Marxist policy. Democrats would be screaming racism, more white women work, they get paid more - its racist! We dont even think that way here.

Abortion is a non issue here, the only main difference i can see it guns and thats because of our very different history. I doubt very many Aussies at all would be democrats - you just couldnt demonize us the way you do American whites, a US democrat party would be laughed out of the country.

I will believe it when Australians get their light bulbs and guns back. In the meantime, I'm a little suspicious about how "conservative" these conservatives actually are. My guess is they are no different than Labour, except they'll pander to big business interests. Hopefully that's not the case.

Just to clarify, the Liberal Party in Australia (the conservatives who got elected) aren't actually conservative by your standards. They support state-run healthcare, relatively high tax, and a more centralized form of government.

Still, it's better than the Labor party being elected. The real success story is that actually decent parties (Palmer United, Liberal Democrats, etc) hold the balance of power in the Senate.

The Liberal Party = conservative. Makes things confusing.

If there's one thing this election has taught me, it's that people to some degree don't care about any of the stuff you listed. By and large there's a group of dedicated party loyalists, then the broader public who vote based on the personalities of the leaders.

People dislike the carbon tax not because it's bad policy (ask anyone what's actually in it) - but because it's a representation of everything that's wrong with Labor.

Guess the progressives should have been focusing on the core issue that actually mattered, instead of ticking everyone off with their nanny-state regulations and mandates. Honestly, how do you expect people to feel liberated when the government is telling the common people what they can and cannot buy?!? And if you have no idea what I'm talking about, you are more ignorant than I thought, and you have no idea what your Party has actually been doing.

Believe me, if Labour had only focused on the "1 percent", and that's all they had been doing, they would not have lost. Instead they had to go on various totalitarian diversions.

I have read and heard different but I am sure you know more than me about your party.(I assume congradulations if I am correct) I will have to correct you on one thing some call the teaparty that not me. Economics is not a issue I feel it has to be my way or the highway, if the teaparty allows the libertarians to control social policy I can accept most of their views on economics even if they are right of myself on that issue. My interest is in running the old guard from the party. I can accept a fiscally conservative socially liberal party. Would not be perfect but better than my choices at the moment.
That sounds fair I have no issue with those stances. LOL, sorry did not mean to offend. The information I have seen did sound more democrat than republican. Our right is not fond of safety nets. Well maybe for big companies but not the little guy.

Again sounds good our public education is a joke even though it is the most expensive in the world.

This was the one issue where you did seem to be in line with most republicans. Born and lived most of my life in a sanctuary city(where federal immigration law is not enforced) I was a minority by a considerable amount. I would like to see fair immigration reform here. It will never happen the democrats want votes the republicans want cheap labor.

I try to be polite however I have a sense of humor so appreciate honesty if done tactfully. As I said I have been a minority most of my life(yes I am white) I have moved back to my redneck roots. I am not a racist but it does get old that only rednecks are fair game to stereotype and insult. If I am to insult or make crude jokes I would rather do it in person rather than on a forum. Again I have no issue with this.

Those taxes in my opinion hurt people of lower income the most. So again I have no issue.

I have no issue with that some republicans might however. They would have to answer that.

Abortion to me is not a issue but to most republicans it is. Personally I feel any women who decides to kill her healthy potential offspring would not be a good mother anyway and would simple create a burden on society. So when not medically required I find it disturbing, I would
not support banning it. Y'all have a far different demographic than we so the democrats exploit that even though they were the party that fought to keep slaves and even deny civil rights. Some have a short memory in the US.

My apologies for saying you were like a democrat. You are also far different than republicans. If you can get them to pass a right to bear arms, end the war on drugs,
and get rid of those snakes that kill you in a few steps, would not be a bad place to live. Your party and me on economics do not sound that much different from your description. You do not seem like either party here. My libertarian beliefs would likely
not fit in as but no party is perfect. Again sorry if I offended you calling you a dirty word but calling y'all republicans would not be much better IMO. Not in it's current form anyway. Hope to change that shortly however. I have no problems with your economic views.
