So....let's say there are two Universal Realities and both possibilities I listed above happen in each one....so i one Universe....Japan say....fires a Anti-Ship Missile from an F-15 and the Chinese Ship is cut in half and sinks. In the other Universe a Chinese Ship near the disputed Islands accidentally misreads a Japanese Destroyer's Active Radar as if it was Japan's Destroyer about to launch a Ship to Ship Missile and the Chinese send a message to a Chinese Sub which then sinks the Japanese Ship with a Torpedo. Now....shortly after...within 5 Minutes of either the Chinese or Japanese coming out of a state of shock realize they just sank the others ship. SEAWOLF ATTACK SUB which was attached to the CVN-73 George Washington Nuclear Carrier Group. At least 2 to 4 Los Angeles Class Attack Subs are a part of a U.S. Nimitz Class Carrier Group but there was built and exist 3 SEAWOLF CLASS SUBS one of which is attached to CVN-73 George Washington. So as far as the Chinese Naval Leadership was concerned the orders given to them by the Chinese Communist Party were COMPLETELY INSANE!!! The L.A. Class Subs are PHENOMENAL in capability and could easily destroy the entire Chinese Task Force all by themselves but a SEAWOLF was designed to find, track and attack Soviet BOOMERS...ie....Very Large and Quiet Soviet Nuclear Submarines such as the Typhoon which had a cache of 20 RSM-52 SLBMs, each of which contained up to 10 MIRV Nuclear warheads....meaning each Typhoon had up to 200 Nuclear Warheads.So given this the Chinese knew a single Seawold could also wipe out the Chinese Fleet. China has got very ignorant (similar to how Japan was during ww2) because of the power growth. They bully Taiwan/Tibet/Hong Kong, and always argue about the Islands. I personally think they should be split between these countries... People dont know how to share. Both could build up formidable war machines in just a few years. Japan has been trying the stimulate their economy since the early 90s with little effect. They've built up magnificent infrastructure but theior banks are zombie, carrying decades of bad paper. A military buildup might get a lot of Japanese working again. Also if Japan thinks the US might welsh on previous security commitments - always a possibility with Hussein Obama - that's all the more reason for a military buildup. Overarching everything is the simple fact they hate each others' guts and have done so for centuries.
