Former Pink Floyd frontman sparks fury by comparing Israelis to Nazis

Religious leaders react angrily to Roger Waters' latest outspoken attack on treatment of Palestinians

    Saturday 14 December 2013

"Inflammatory remarks by the musician Roger Waters, formerly of(*)Pink Floyd, comparing the modern Israeli state to Nazi Germany have put him at the centre of a furious dispute."

"Performers and religious figures reacted angrily to the veteran rock star's argument that Israeli treatment of the Palestinians can be compared to the atrocities of Nazi Germany."

"The parallels with what went on in the 1930s in Germany are so crushingly obvious," he said in an American online interview last week."

"Waters, 70, a(*)well-known supporter of the Palestinian cause, has frequently defended himself against accusations that he is antisemitic, claiming he has a right to urge fellow artists to boycott Israel."

    http://www.theguardian.com/music/2013/dec/14/pink-floyd-frontman-fury-israel-nazis

What is wrong with Roger Waters speaking Truth about Israel's crimes against humanity in Palestine?

I greatly admire this man for the stand he takes against that Injustice called Occupation in Palestine.

Musicians who use their music to confront Injustices we live in the midst of in this beautiful world we all live together in inspire us all to see how each one of us can make a positive difference in this world.

He has a right to his point of view.

" ...Speaking in New York, he said: ‘I do not know Rabbi Boteach, and am not prepared to get into a slanging match with him. I will say this: I have nothing against Jews or Israelis, and I am not antisemitic.
‘I deplore the policies of the Israeli government in the occupied territories and Gaza. They are immoral, inhuman and illegal. I will continue my non-violent protests as long as the government of Israel continues with these policies.’ .. "

Waters was never the frontman for Pink Floyd, but that's another matter. I do think he has a point.

I've been to Israel and Germany, and have visited the former Nazi concentration camps in Germany, and driven by the ones in Israel. One sight that I will never forget is how the design of the electric fences in the Israeli camps are identical to those in Germany. Eery.

Yes there are many parallels. Both Nazi Germany and Zionist Israel are highly militaristic. Both believed (hard to mix tense) that their people have a divine right that makes them "right" unilaterally. Both are known for military conquest and imperialism. Both are known for extensive propaganda campaigns. Both have bad reputations for human rights violations. The list goes on and on. These are facts, and facts have no agenda; they are what they are.

"The Nazis weren't bad until they killed almost 6 million Jews!"

    Hmm, great logic there.

Almost as ridiculous as "Israel can't be like Nazis! Nazis invaded France, have we invaded France? No! Then we aren't comparable!"

Good for Waters. More people in the public eye need to voice what everyone already knows. Israel is the pariah rogue state of the Middle East, and any sympathy it once deserved long ago passed its 'sell by' date.

There is the problem. At least in the US, the pro-Zionist propaganda is so intense that nobody knows what's really going on there. People think that it's still the end of WWII or something. Most think of Israel a country full of non-threatening people wearing tembel hats, growing grapes and thanking the US in their prayers. It doesn't even register the possibility that the formerly oppressed could now be the oppressors. Utterly clueless.

Which lead to the famous opening question in an interview "So which one is Pink?" lol

And I respect Waters because this is not some rent a cause to boost album sales and exposure. He has been on this kick for a while

I think it would be accurate to compare Israel to the communist states that spread over Europe after WW2.

Various religious, political and ethnic groups killing each other, taking land, dislocating people, putting people in gulags or prision camps.

Discussion of these events in post war Europe are just as censored as those going on in Israel.

    The song said it all.

I found an article at Haaretz last week which was suggesting that maybe the time is nearing, highlighted by Mandela's funeral, remembering his life, that the cards are maybe beginning to reach a tipping point with Israel.

I have to say that I respect Waters actually supporting a cause. Big difference between lashing out with negativity (like he did from "Animals" til long after he quit the band) and giving coherent, positive support. I like the kinder, gentler Roger.

    Utter nonsense.

Most Americans don't know what's going on there because they don't need to know or they don't care - they've got more important matters to focus on closer to home. You're grossly over-stating and exaggerating the influence of pro-Zionist propaganda in this country.

I would add that you're also overlooking the sizable number of people, most notably the ANSWERnik Left, who are openly and reflexively hostile to Israel and are just as simple-minded as the people you described in your post.

Zionists such as Begin were compared to fascists way back in the late 1940s by Jewish scholars such as Einstein and others:

New Palestine Party. Visit of Menachen Begin and Aims of Political Movement Discussed. A letter to The New York Times. Saturday December 4, 1948 by Albert Einstein, Hannah Arendt, Sidney Hook, et.al.

New Palestine Party. Visit of Menachen Begin and Aims of Political Movement Discussed. A letter to The New York Times, published in the "Books" section (Page 12) of Saturday December 4, 1948

by Albert Einstein, Hannah Arendt, Sidney Hook, et.al.

TO THE EDITORS OF NEW YORK TIMES:

Among the most disturbing political phenomena of our times is the emergence in the newly created state of Israel of the "Freedom Party" (Tnuat Haherut), a political party closely akin in its organization, methods, political philosophy and social appeal to the Nazi and Fascist parties. It was formed out of the membership and following of the former Irgun Zvai Leumi, a terrorist, right-wing, chauvinist organization in Palestine.

The current visit of Menachem Begin, leader of this party, to the United States is obviously calculated to give the impression of American support for his party in the coming Israeli elections, and to cement political ties with conservative Zionist elements in the United States. Several Americans of national repute have lent their names to welcome his visit. It is inconceivable that those who oppose fascism throughout the world, if correctly informed as to Mr. Begin's political record and perspectives, could add their names and support to the movement he represents.

Before irreparable damage is done by way of financial contributions, public manifestations in Begin's behalf, and the creation in Palestine of the impression that a large segment of America supports Fascist elements in Israel, the American public must be informed as to the record and objectives of Mr. Begin and his movement.

The public avowals of Begin's party are no guide whatever to its actual character. Today they speak of freedom, democracy and anti-imperialism, whereas until recently they openly preached the doctrine of the Fascist state. It is in its actions that the terrorist party betrays its real character; from its past actions we can judge what it may be expected to do in the future.

    Attack on Arab Village

A shocking example was their behavior in the Arab village of Deir Yassin. This village, off the main roads and surrounded by Jewish lands, had taken no part in the war, and had even fought off Arab bands who wanted to use the village as their base. On April 9 (THE NEW YORK TIMES), terrorist bands attacked this peaceful village, which was not a military objective in the fighting, killed most of its inhabitants (240 men, women, and children) and kept a few of them alive to parade as captives through the streets of Jerusalem. Most of the Jewish community was horrified at the deed, and the Jewish Agency sent a telegram of apology to King Abdullah of Trans-Jordan. But the terrorists, far from being ashamed of their act, were proud of this massacre, publicized it widely, and invited all the foreign correspondents present in the country to view the heaped corpses and the general havoc at Deir Yassin.

The Deir Yassin incident exemplifies the character and actions of the Freedom Party.

Within the Jewish community they have preached an admixture of ultranationalism, religious mysticism, and racial superiority. Like other Fascist parties they have been used to break strikes, and have themselves pressed for the destruction of free trade unions. In their stead they have proposed corporate unions on the Italian Fascist model.

During the last years of sporadic anti-British violence, the IZL and Stern groups inaugurated a reign of terror in the Palestine Jewish community. Teachers were beaten up for speaking against them, adults were shot for not letting their children join them. By gangster methods, beatings, window-smashing, and wide-spread robberies, the terrorists intimidated the population and exacted a heavy tribute.

The people of the Freedom Party have had no part in the constructive achievements in Palestine. They have reclaimed no land, built no settlements, and only detracted from the Jewish defense activity. Their much-publicized immigration endeavors were minute, and devoted mainly to bringing in Fascist compatriots.

    Discrepancies Seen

The discrepancies between the bold claims now being made by Begin and his party, and their record of past performance in Palestine bear the imprint of no ordinary political party. This is the unmistakable stamp of a Fascist party for whom terrorism (against Jews, Arabs, and British alike), and misrepresentation are means, and a "Leader State" is the goal.

In the light of the foregoing considerations, it is imperative that the truth about Mr. Begin and his movement be made known in this country. It is all the more tragic that the top leadership of American Zionism has refused to campaign against Begin's efforts, or even to expose to its own constituents the dangers to Israel from support to Begin.

The undersigned therefore take this means of publicly presenting a few salient facts concerning Begin and his party; and of urging all concerned not to support this latest manifestation of fascism.

Sure seemed like demons to me! And not working in concert with Gilmour & Wright's musical excellence. It was a dream come true when PF sans Waters emerged. I'm happy for him being in a better place though.

Yeah, I prefer post-Waters Floyd too. Gilmour has a better voice.

Still, Waters was great with Dark Side of the Moon.

I did not hear that the Israelis built concentration/death camps for the Palestinians,
neither did I hear that the Palestinians were being chased around executed just because of their race.
and here's one song from Pink Floyd's.

The schism between the faithful and the secularists was the first sign of trouble.

The story of the Jewish people is rife with cautionary tales of the consequences of turning away from God and seeking false idols. The story of modern secular Israel seems to continue that theme.

I don't know what to make of the "Christians" who believe that they can outsmart God and "force the Rapture" by starting a race war in the holy land. That's just plain nuts.
