He's neither. Not sure why you think Obama has control over the NSA. He's just along for the ride, until someone else takes his place. The NSA as an entity is more powerful than any president.

Amen to that observation. Obama's been out of control since the day he took the oath.. the first time. Soros is the puppet master. .. Barry is just the front man.

Right, just like Obama has no power over the IRS.

    Silly me.

Do you think he would wind up like JFK if he tried to reign them in?

In order to have a democracy, a nation must have a people's constitution. The United States no longer has a constitution founded by the people, therefore, no democracy. Today's constitution is the personal property of President Obama.

If democracy isnt dead its dieing in a hurry. Any country or any one/group with enough money can take control and act as king making his own laws at will as Obama has shown. Use minor funding cuts to hurt his own people, all to gain more control. Divide and conquer..... the US/ West is losing the cold war. Its not on the doorstep its in your most comfy chair. Its too easily manipulated and corrupted with a brain dead populaces.

Actually, Bush flushed the Constitution some time ago after he wiped his elitist rear end with it. The Patriot Act rules all now. Read it and see for yourself. It trumps the Constitution in every way.

Jimmy carter is clearly as racist as the tea party for railing against the Obama NSA taps and the IRS attacks.

    - - - Updated - - -

I also voted for tea party members like Allen west that voted and fought to repeal it.

Please..Carter is the furthest thing from racist. The TP? Simply the equivalent of the GOP (totally anti-minority).

We are a Republic not a Democracy first off. Secondly the fact that we had the NSA exposed and hopefully are reforming this BS, is a good sign. This is why a smaller government is better. Founding fathers knew this.

We are a society where the few control the many, and serve the richest of the rich. Not a democracy, by any means.

    He's accurate.

Technically, we have a democracy, but it's a rather Orwellian one in many respects.

Granted, we're not the only country that does this. Various European countries are rather loose in their interpretation of the right to privacy and habeas corpus. Getting a wiretap without a warrant is pretty easy in the Netherlands, and getting a warrant doesn't exactly have the same level of oversight as here when looking at the UK or France.

So, there is a lot of room for improvement in reforming both our democracy and the democracies of other nations.

When looking more specifically at electoral issues, however, America does seem to have a bigger problem with lobbyism and questionable vote counting procedures as compared to many of its peers.

We also lack proportional representation to the same extent as most of our peers.

Was not Jimmy Carter President of the USA? He may talk big about moral authority now, but wouldn't he be running the same intelligence programs, in the background, during his run as they currently run now? (Sans tech advancement of course) After all, The USSR still existed in the 1970s and 1980s... The Big, Red Bear was still lurking around. CIA vs KGB, and wasn't there a red scare?

Eh, I might be frisked at the air port, but I can still vote.

Well, I agree with him here. Egypt's conflict, their ability to elect their representatives, is currently mess. I don't think it will work out, because they have a powerful military leaning over their shoulders, but I could be wrong, I can only hope.

Back in the USA, Citizens United was a wholesale giveaway of the American campaign season over to the rich and powerful. I was also really worried there for a while, but after the election It appears that people will vote for who they will regardless, and it doesn't matter how much secret money is pumped into the propaganda system. Thank goodness!

Jimmy Carter shows his age. Facebook and Twitter aren't peacekeeping organizations who need to protect their reputation. They are social media sites. People, of all stripes, go there to talk and share their lives, regardless. People who use the service need to agree to the terms of use (don't be obnoxious). NSA spying is going on anywhere online, now. It doesn't matter where you go. They have ways of getting the information, one way or another, where the major sites cooperate with the law or not.

It is "cruel and unusual," no doubt about that, but we live in interesting times, fighting a terrorist enemy who hides in the shadows. The humanitarians had their chance in the 20th century to prove that their ideology worked and they could lead the way to the future, but they put the terrorist threat on the back burner. Now that we, in the USA, after we had our World Trade Center and Pentagon attacked, we can see that the handhold methods weren't nearly good enough. Now we have to throw everything at the wall to see what sticks, and find a balance between caring for human freedom and dignity and providing protection for the lives of others.

Oh, and Carter was President of the USA. Am I to believe he NEVER did any detentions or wiretapping at all, behind the scenes, especially during the red scare? Who's kidding who?

This is Jimmy Carter being naive, He can't understand a world without America having the default ULTIMATE POWER, and, so, he is not able to absorb the facts. The USA is in decline. There are charts and projections to prove it. We aren't even going to be a superpower by the mid-century mark.

This isn't so much about human rights as it is about our allies, rivals, and enemies who can smell blood in the water and are moving to position themselves to fill the void that will come as the USA looses superpower status.

Of course he did, but was it from a naive sentiment or a guilty conscience?

Wait you were the President once right? Why didn't you just pass out the nuclear codes while you were at it? I mean, the Soviets would have loved them.

Likewise, just like in the Cold War days, we have enemies both foreign and domestic right here, right now. And, the attempts to catalog people's online footprints, as part of the 21st century law enforcement initiative (as found in the Patriot act), so the law can retrace them after a crime.. This system has been revealed to the public.

Tell me, during your run as President, did we also reveal when the CIA was tapping phone lines looking for spies? No? Well.... HYPOCRITE!

Ah, there you go Jimmy Carter, sit back and enjoy the wonders of not having a leak during your Presidency...

I don't know any Obama dead heads but I would be glad to answer. Jimmy Carter has an opinion, and I think his conclusion is wrong.

Is Rush Limbaugh a racist or is he senile?

That’s just not the way it is. Yes, agencies like the NSA have numerous programs in place that a President may not know about. Some of that may be plausible deniability but often times it is just that the government as a whole has more programs going on than any one person, particularly someone as busy as a President, could be briefed on.

However, when the President gives an order to an agency, such as the NSA, regarding a program, they follow the order to the best of their ability. Government agencies, particularly military ones like the NSA, take chain of command pretty seriously.

At least that was the impression I got during my 20 year career in the Intelligence Community.
