I have noticed over the years that the majority of MacDonalds ads feature a variety of minorities (Black, Hispanic, mixed race, etc). The few Whites that appear are kind of scrungy, knit capped gang looking types. I'd seriously like to know if anyone can explain this particular focus. Personally, I haven't patronized them because of it. Input welcome. Enjoy!
I rarely see any commercials. I have this new invention, remote, and now dvr. And I care less who is used in commercials. It has no impact on what I buy. If I like/want/need something, I'll buy it and in case of a food joint, if the food is good I patronize. In the case of Mcds, there food isn't good IMO. Although, it seems petty to not patronize an establishment because there aren't enough of the type of people you'd like to see.
It may be simply a reflection of America's demographics, which is 60% white, and the UK ads mostly feature white actors with only few minorities. A target market in the UK is 90% white and the ethnic composition of actors appearing in those ads is proportionate to the nation's demographic make-up and this is how advertising and marketing should work.
I didn't mean to come off that way. It's just that their ads give the impression that they don't want my business. And yes, their food isn't all that great. Enjoy!
Well, we live in a society with a media that cries foul if there aren't more minorities on TV than whites. McDonalds probably realized they would be demonized in the media if they didn't way overdo the use of minorities in advertising.
I don't think that is the case at all. I think McD's realizes that a disproportionate number of the people who are going to eat there come from lower income brackets. And minorities are disproportionately represented in those brackets. I'm not saying all people who eat at McD's are poor. But in general people who can afford real food are going to buy real food and McD's will just be a one-off thing when nothing else is open.
I am sorry but are you honestly saying that having the "right" type of people in an ad is MORE important than oh! I don't know let's say - having a crappy product that is contributing to the disease burden of the country……………targeting young kids and promoting a poor diet choice life style………. targeting poorer communities who are likely to be less informed about good diet choices…………..
Stuff like this has been going on in advertising for years now. Ever notice how in commercials with dumb people, the dumb people are always white? It's typically a dumb white guy who can't figure out something simple and a minority comes to save the day.
