Question, which is true, a or b:
    a. You did NOT know to not kill people as a child, so good thing the Bible is around or you might have turned out to be a mass-murderer because you didn't innately know right from wrong!
    OR
    b. You knew killing is wrong as a child, and it's an insult to your intelligence for "god" to have to tell you this. "Just how stupid does he think I am?", is your attitude. "God" (aka Captain Obvious) doesn't think much of our intelligence, so the 10 Commandments were just invented, by men.

    Which is it, guys?

6th Commandment (5th in some interpretations....they can't even get the 10 Commandments right) says "thou shalt not kill". Did you have to be told that, or was it so obvious to you as a child that it's incredibly stupid for it to be in the top 6 of all commands to us?
Just how stupid does "god" think we are, Karma?
"Don't drop an anvil on your foot" would have been about as helpful.

Of course not. This would apply if, if it's true.

Then you had to be told not to kill?

Actually it says do not murder. Different thing and clearly needed in the ancient near east. It redefined a social contract. By the way at the time people were sacrificing their own children so'......

So the 10 Commandments are not relevant for today, is what you're saying. Just like most of the bible.

No, it says "Thou shalt not kill." http://biblehub.com/kjv/exodus/20.htm

Even if it did say "murder" instead of kill, people are not that stupid.

YES, and thank goodness for the Bible, or I'd be a serial killer right now!!!!!!

No, actually, "Thou shalt not take a dump on a sleeping bear's head", would have been equally as helpful to me.

As society crumbles (meaning as society or community turns from God), then that society tends to not value human life. God commands that we value human life and thus "do not commit murder" . 15 & 16 year olds who evidently weren't taught this commandment and who are living in a decayed society see murdering other young men as the norm and part of life. And of course---we have mothers killing their unborn human life.

So--personally I don't think the commandments are "General Revelation" as I believe they are instructing us to do what is right---not what is natural.

The golden rule would be better than most all of the 10 Commandments, but "god" wasn't smart enough to put that in the 10 Commandments because he's not real.
Apparently not coveting “his ox, or his donkey" is more of a priority to the Brainiac who invented the 10 Commandments than the golden rule is. The Bible got it wrong, anybody can see that.

If "god" doesn't understand priorities very well then he's about as real as Zeus is (or bigfoot, or Nessie, etc.)

What, do not steal? I did NOT know that! Wow, I guess I should return all this stolen merchandise since now I know that stealing is wrong. Good thing the Bible is around, whew! But it also approves of slavery, so I guess if I'm going to follow the Bible, and be consistent, then I should get me some of them (Jesus accepted slavery, so it must be ok, right?)

Ok, I just got back from trying to follow the Bible, and apparently Jesus got it all wrong and slavery is NOT OK, as I was arrested for trying to enslave people. Bummer! So which is correct, a or b?
    a. Jesus was right, and slavery is acceptable, so we should change the laws.
    OR
    b. Jesus was wrong (and therefore not divine), and slavery is NOT acceptable, so we should keep our anti-slavery laws (in defiance of Jesus)?

    Which is it?
Can you be as consistent as a Modern Secular Humanist, when it comes to morality, or not?

I never said that....I was explaining why your idea is idiotic

The Bible wasn't written in English....it is two words and they mean Don't Murder.

    Well yes for two reasons
    1. Killing was still an acceptable punishment for some things.
    2. Murder had not been defined for the ancient Israelites.

I am sorry you don't understand. How can I help you.

I quoted the KJV, so you're obviously saying that most Christians (if it's the most used version of all time) follow the wrong translation of the Bible?

If those people were that incredibly stupid, then TODAY why would we believe anything they say that's not scientifically provable?

By the way, I admire the calm demeanor that you tend to exhibit (I myself get a little wound up at times, I'll admit.)

yes that is what I am saying

The Bible says this: לֹא תִרְצָח No Thou No shalt Just NO MURDER...meaning Don't Murder....

It wasn't stupidity......mayhaps you actually go and read a book or something and not just rant.

Sad that they can't even agree on what the TEN COMMANDMENTS SAY! That "god" is the worse communicator of all time. If he cared for us he'd reveal the "correct" 10 commandments at, say, oh, the opening ceremonies of the Olympics, or some other big event, but he won't, because "god" is just a figment of very fertile imaginations. Or "god" doesn't give a dang about us enough to bother doing that, so he's clearly not worth my worship.

Well actually---Do Not Steal and Do Not Covet are very important commandments. People can easily justify stealing (its not fair they have more then me, the store won't miss it, it isn't hurting anyone etc) Coveting is poison and leads into justifying taking things from others. Both coveting and stealing are entirely natural human responses- and people do have to be taught that it is wrong. To do what is right---not what is natural.

Well---it depends on who you are talking about. Criminals who lose all rights---could be considered enslaved. Prisoners of war---can be considered enslaved. I don't see anything wrong with prisoners being made to work---with no pay--as payment to society for their crimes. The chain gangs could be an example of slaves...though we don't call them that of course. But the concept is the same.

As a modern Secular Humanist I believe in humanity's goodness more than the Bible does.
"Follow the laws of the democracy you are in" would, for various reasons, be a better commandment.....because god could have just told them that democracy is best (ok it had to start somewhere I guess) and it would have taken off from there.

Does this superior morality disallow you to admit you were wrong? Oh while not a Christian Jesus kind of covered that " Render unto Caesar..."
Again, take the chip off your shoulder and go read a book.

You make a good point, but the Bible doesn't just approve of slavery for criminals or prisoners of war, now does it? No, the bible is evil incarnate because it approves of slavery for other people than that. Clearly god/Jesus are simply evil (or else they would, today, tell us that the bible got it all wrong and that slavery is evil.) They don't do that for the same reason that Zeus doesn't help us out today (i.e. none of them are real.)

So for non-criminals/POW's, just say, which is true, a or b?
    a. Jesus was right, and slavery is acceptable, so we should change the laws.
    OR
    b. Jesus was wrong (and therefore not divine), and slavery is NOT acceptable, so we should keep our anti-slavery laws (in defiance of Jesus)?

    - - - Updated - - -

Of course I admit when I'm wrong.
Will you admit that Jesus got it wrong when he approved of slavery (you can't because then that makes you smarter and more moral than Jesus and that blows your whole world view.) But I'm here to tell you that you are INDEED better than Jesus. So let's stop believing in invisible zombies and start believing in ourselves.

To be fair, I think children do need to be taught not to kill/murder, if only indirectly via being taught more general principles like not to hurt people. History (and, sadly, contemporary evidence) shows that it's certainly perfectly possible for young people to be brought up believing it's perfectly OK for them to kill people (often a specified group of people). I suspect a child brought up with no external moral teaching wouldn't baulk at killing a stranger if they felt they had reason to do so.
