When my Dad moved up from down South to Ohio, he also had a hard time getting a job. Southerners still were not to well liked up North. After weeks of trying, he got this one interview and told them if you just give me a chance to work the job and learn it, I'll work a month for nothing. They were so impressed with that, they hired him on the spot.

My compsci.degree helped me out greatly. I made good money just as a grunt coder then started a decent business that is still going strong -- well enough that I handed over management and went back to school in a different field. If you don't find a job in an IT company, scan Craigslist or Freelancer for IT gigs,

I know it sucks, it feels like this stranger has spent 30 seconds to read brief resume, and then dismissed you, given you the thumbs down, judged you and found you wanting.

But that's just the way it is now. You got to keep sending resumes, keep going to job interviews, you only need one to work, and that's the last one, for a while anyways. I just went through one of the longest periods of looking for work ever, and I was feeling like I was being dismissed for being too old, and what can you do about that? But I kept going and finally someone said "can you start next week".
Sweet job too, super bennies, nice pay rate, interesting work.
You never know why you don't get the job, but the important thing to remember is you only need one.
If you go on a hundred interviews and get one job, you are employed, making money, and looking for the next job.
Which is easier, because people like hiring people who already have a job.

BTW, hiring managers are usually clueless, they will pass by 7 or 8 people capable of doing an excellent job and hire a complete jerk who turns into a disaster.
It's a crapshoot, just hang in there and sooner or later, someone will offer you a job.

I was never happier than when I got out of the corporate grind and went independent.

Americans don't know what to believe and it's as simple as that. And the reason for that is because the political system has developed into a celebrity popularity contest, with nobody really knowing all that much about policy.

A politician's skill is in finding a counterargument or criticism to any suggestion presented by the opposition. The problem is that criticism does not have to be valid or defendable, but simply believed by a lot of people. Therefore, politicians have naturally developed into skilled and intricate liars. Nowhere is that more apparent than in the United States.

Ice water is being served in hell. Quantumhead said something with which I agree.

This must be the end of the world.

In that case you should tread carefully. It's a slippery slope, my friend. One moment you're begrudgingly agreeing with me; the next you're starting a cult in my name and worshipping a statue in your back yard. I've seen it before. Be sure to keep your wits about you.

Old people know they are soon to merge with the infinite, consequently they tend to mellow and pray for forgiveness for all the evil thoughts and things they did when they were young.

Never ask a conservative for advice on how to get a job because the vast majority of them don't know as they never really had to. They had "connections" or an uncle in the business or some other thing, and quite a few just followed a line of advice from their fathers, who said. "Son, here's a million dollars, don't lose it."

In any case, they wouldn't tell you if they did. One of a conservative's main pleasures in life is schadenfruede (sp) a German word which means "the pleasure you derive from the misfortune of others". All they're going to do is tell you that your inability to find a job just shows what a defective person you are, which is discouraging in itself and makes you feel worse, which makes them feel better. Conservatives, in other words, are ****** jerks. Don't EVER talk over your problems of any kind with one. If they're relatives or friends you probably know this already, but never forget that, while they may have many other sterling and appealing qualities, sympathy and empathy are in VERY short supply among conservatives

Notice I say conservatives, not old people. Not all conservatives are old and not all liberals are young

There is, unfortunately, no way to get a job that will work all the time for every person. Lacking connections, relatives or riches you have nothing to rely on but persistence and luck.

It is very possible that your jobless state might be an advantage as you are studying computer science. Keep up with the latest developments in your field and be aware of whichever ones might enable you to make money. You are almost certainly as intelligent as Mark Zuckerberg and probably more educated than Bill Gates. The only thing separating you from them is circumstance, and the one thing you probably have MORE of than them is time.

Can you write? You could do worse than to try and emulate the success of Amanda Hocking. I say this because you said you are studying computer science. It's my opinion that the next crop of Internet millionaires are going to be self-published authors and just about all of them agree that a good deal of their success has come not from their literary talents as much as their advertising skill in various social media which you are probably very highly proficient in, or could become so in short order. (If you should try this route, however, remember one thing above all, money should flow TO the writer, anyone who asks YOU for money in any way should be the subject of VERY careful scrutiny on your part.)

Your family has given you more than enough good advice to get you on your way. No doubt that these are hard times. But you still have to have faith. And don't buy into the malarky coming from the communists about a living wage. That's just a ridiculous fairytale. I mean, you can't harvest a five acre crop(living wage) of tomatoes from one easy bush. Taking it from someone else ( living wage) is plain old thievery. That's how communism and the crap coming from the left works. Imperfections and shortcomings aside, your'e lucky to have the family you do.

Do you drive and have access to an automobile? Are you willing to work in a field you are not trained in? If so...try Home Health Care or Nursing Homes. They are always looking for employees and they will train you. It's how I got started then went to school and got my RN degree! The medical field will ALWAYS need workers so try your local hospital or nursing home. One plus with Home Health Care is that they pay you mileage and (as far as I know) your mileage check isn't taxed. There is always plenty of potential for overtime work too! :) Good Luck.

Andro. If you follow this advice, you might as well set up camp in dad's basement. You're gonna be there for a while.

One thing that many unemployed are facing now is age discrimination. If you are over 45 and unemployed, the odds of finding new employment are pretty poor, no matter how well trained, or educated you are. Here is a good article on the subject

Until you get the degree & education to go with it, your out. Some options,

1.Shut up and get the degree.
2.Join the military, either airforce or navy and finish getting degree.
3.Hunt for overseas jobs where American work went.
    4.Start a business

Best advantage is military because you get the degree with pay & medical benefits, and you get a retirement and other bennys when you leave. They pay bonuses to retain you, so keep your contracts short.

Both of my sons worked pretty much full time while they were in college, the younger one also got a nice chunk of change from the GI bill.

You're 21 years old, still living off Mommie and Daddy, and complaining that Mommie and Daddy want you grow up and get a job? Nothing quite like Mom's home cooking, Huh.

You obviously didn't read the OP, otherwise you would know that I have no problem getting a job. The OP is about the difficulties of finding a job.

Don't gimme this 'we' crap. I've been fighting that BS since High school. I threw out the first flat tax proposal that I'm aware of in 1968 and discovered what I was up against when an English professor acquaintance of mine couldn't get his head wrapped around the idea that 10% of a hundred thousand was more than 10% of 10,000. Not all of us boomers went along with this crap. And a lot of it was set in place by the generation before ours. And the generqation right after ours keeps voting for damn fools like Obama. And then wondering where all the good jobs have gone.
