Look, I have no documented proof of what I'm about to write, but if this were indeed true, this owner would have problems getting help period. Again, I've not seen this before. Please tell me the name of the business and so I can avoid going to it. I've only heard of all tips going in a pot and dividing that money at the end of a shift with the servers and bartenders. Period.

    That's the reality, too.

It'd be a step in the right direction if they'd simply pay the employees they abuse, themselves though, but that doesn't happen either. Why people accept this nonsense is beyond me.

but the sad reality is not everyone has that option...a high school graduate unable to pay for further education has very few choices...

that there so many applicants reflects the lack of available jobs, people desperate for work will take the worst jobs...ten years ago when I moved to my current location there were so many jobs here that restaurants closing up because they couldn't find anyone that would work for them...one of my clients owns two donut franchises they had to recruit employees from india because of the labour shortage and gave their employees profit sharing to retrain them...

There are no guarantees to how much, if anything your going to get tipped. It all depends on what the customer wants to leave, if anything. You could bust your butt, be the best waiter or waitress, but if the person you serving decides to to be cheap and give you nothing, oh well, you lose. And legally there is nothing you can do about it either.

In many states the minimum wage tipped jobs is down below $2.50 an hour. Fortunately in Oregon and a few other states tipped jobs have the same minimum wage plus tips on top. There's no legal requirement to tip, but I still don't mind tipping.

Happens rarely and who cares no one is going to sue over 15%. For the amount of people who stiff you the amount who give over the standard 15% more then make up for it.

It's not true. Waiters normally tip out the busboys and in some restaurants where the bartender primarily serves drinks to eating guests, the bartender. Chefs and maitre d's are tipped separately. I've never seen an owner tipped.

I don't know what labour regulations are in place everywhere, my experience is that restaurants do whatever they want and generally copy other establishments so that employees can't find anything better...

when I worked in the business servers wanted nothing to do with pooling their tips...their logic was sound a lazy or slow server could wait one table in two hrs and another would look after 4-6, obviously pooling is sweet deal for the poor server not so much for the good one...in that establishment servers weren't required to pool or share their tips with anyone they got to keep the rewards for their efficiency... the kitchen staff didn't like it but they were bring paid double the minimum wage and got that whether the restaurant was busy or not or whether their food was up to proper standards...

I can't tell you the name of the corporate chain because it's a canadian I'm assuming you're in the US, I don't know if every region has the same rules, provincial labour laws may be different so singling one out wouldn't be fair...

management are not necessarily the owners so they could make a claim for tip sharing as well...and the restaurant where my daughter worked the busboys/girls got nothing, straight minimum wage(another daughter bused tables in the same establishment, and that another story of corporate abuse)...

in some places tips are included in the bill so you don't have a choice, I have no issue with that as long as the service is good...I've only encountered that once here....

server jobs are not usually long term career choices most people get out as fast as they can, if they can...so unionizing it isn't really practical however governments should put in some better basic labour standards that prevent some of the unscrupulous owners from taking advantage of employees...

I think it happens more then we want to admit. Shame on those who stiff when they received excellent service from the wait staff.

I think this whole tipping thign should go away all together and waiters/waitresses and other employees who currently work for tips, actually get paid a reasonable salary upfront and eliminate the need for tips to earn a decent wage. Some countries actually frown upon tipping. The exception to this would be like strip clubs, where the actual job of the stripper is to get you to spend money on them, where as a waitress, or card dealers job is to serve you food, drinks..or deal you cards. The money that changes hands is not meant for them, but the company they work for

I waited tables for 6 years and can count the times I have been stiffed on one hand.

    - - - Updated - - -

Prepare for poor service and poorly paid servers.

    - - - Updated - - -

They just leave to work at another place if the money isn't good. High turnover.

Have any of you guys waited tables before?

I only managed, daughters waited and bussed...I think you got stiffed more times than you can probably remember...I managed for 2 years and I recall quite a few dine&dash incidents (stiffing on a big scale)and if I ask my daughter she's been stiffed a number of times in two-three years she's been waiting tables(I hear the complaints when she comes home), and if not totally stiffed the tips were so small she had to make up for the shortfall out of her other tips or wages to cover the 6% of the gross she had to share...

I'll even tip bad service and food because I know the staff often share tips...maybe they don't deserve anything but I know the fault is not always that of the server or the kitchen staff, so do I punish the server because the food is crap? do I punish the kitchen staff because the service is crap?...I'll tip the minimum, write a really nasty review on the local restaurant review website and never go back again...

Maybe it is the kind of restaraunt she is in. Bars are worse I think then restaraunts. I guess if you counted times i served deinks bartending and didnt get a tip it would add up, but not bar tipping is a little different. Takes a second to make a drink, lots of people go with the $1 per drink rule etc.. did best at family restaraunts and fine dining. I am pretty sure I can remember every dine and dash. I caught 2 in the parking lot. Once a big table of waiters and bartenders no les withou paying full amount. A church group have me a fake $50 with a note about how I shouldn't feel bad Jesus loves me, and then there was and old couple at apple bees that used a coupon. That is about it. Great job for a young kid, teaches work ethic and hard work on your feet, and gives the right amount of impetus to move on to other things but can feed your family should you ever need to fall back. 6% tip out is OK if there is a food runner, expo and busboy. If less then that and a lot of side work move into greener pastures I say.

It's also NOT required by law to pay them minimum wage.

Good point. So mostly it's the bottom of the barrel. It's not a destination job. I'm glad you said this because it puts things in perspective.

Good point. But it also points out the obvious. Know the limitations and if they acted like they were appreciative of the customer then they wouldn't have to worry about tips. Then they wouldn't be acting swagged out and then when the rug gets pulled from up under them they are stuck.

Well you're talking about your experience in Canada, it isn't that way in the US. And the minimum wage isn't in play either. Apples and oranges.

So are you now the spokesperson for waiters and waitresses? Have you done research that validates your point from them?
