Very few people are true "moral absolutists."

I gave an example earlier of how killing is acceptable in some cases. Most people find killing acceptable when done in self-defense. So, for those people, the morality of killing is relative to the situation.

There are very few people that won't even kill in self-defense or defense of another.

Another example is lying. We often lie to be courteous. Most people won't tell a woman she looks fat in a dress even if she actually does, in order to be polite.

So, regardless of religion, most people are, in practice, morally dependent on the situation.

Some interpretations of religion are more strict than others, and some law systems reflect this. However, usually, the more rigid a system is, the less adaptable it is to reality.

If Russia doesn't care what they do behind closed doors, what is the law all about?
But you'll never rid the world of them or their behaviour, heteros keep producing them.

I'll concede that, but when you look at the disastrous consequences of chattel slavery we are dealing with an observable fact.

Of course, that is subjective, too, but I'm inclined to agree with you.

As I pointed out, natural law and rights can lead us to observable fact.

Nevertheless, what intrigues me is your mention of nihilism. I'd be interested to hear you clarify/expand on that thought.

    None whatsoever.

Furthermore, Faulkner pointed out that the harmful consequences were more than physical (the destruction of the South during the Civil War) - there were also harmful moral and psychological consequences that remain with us to this day.

I've heard some Chinese people say the same thing about Communism in their country and how it has negatively impacted them on a moral and psychological level. It's quite fascinating and consistent with what happened to many Southerners in the U.S.

Sharik, I read a Russian Orthodox book about the experiences of Father Arseny in the Gulag by his spiritual children. He was an Orthodox Elder and they considered it amazing that he was able to survive for three decades. He attributed it to the fact that he had taken care of a powerful criminal when he was sick, and so he became the Elders protector. Father Arseny also intervened when the criminals tried to kill others, and at one time he was sent to his own death by the guards because of it. He did survive. Oh a whole, it was not a nice place, and the death rate was very high.

I always found this interesting, because it reflects the cultural differences between 'East & West'. There is no Commandment saying 'Thou Shalt Not Lie'. The Commandment says not to bear false witness. In other words do not say or accuse someone of something which is not true.

    And what of these issues?

My working theory is that the Russians deliberately made living conditions difficult for the visiting athletes so that they'll compete affected by illness and/or insomnia, allowing the Russians easy wins.

And where in the Koran does it say women must wear burkas?

The KGB manned the copy machines in the Soviet Union; there was no way for it to advance in any meaningful way when it came to technological innovations such as the internet. And if the USSR really was the most advanced country ever, where is it now?

So you are accusing the Russian Orthodox Church for lying? Are you going to say then that the priests, monks and bishops were not sent to the Gulag simply for being priests, monks and bishops, and that five thousand churches and monasteries were not destroyed? If that is so, then you are also saying that the pictures of the original Church of Our Saviour, which was demolished by the Soviets are fakes? Come on now, you know better than that? :disbelief:

Perhaps in incompetence, corruption, police brutality and abuse, human rights violations, lies and propaganda, totalitarism, brainwashing, food and goods shortages, travel restrictions and the amount of alcohol consumption per capital...Hmm, Russia is not far behind in all these categories though.

Nazi Germany had labor camps also, or at least that's what they called them.
