Faithful America, a large online community of Christians, has launched an effort to publicly denounce former Republican vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin after she mocked one of the religions most important rituals by comparing it to waterboarding.

Speaking at the National Rifle Association (NRA) convention last week, Palin had explained how things would be different if she were president.

They obviously have information on plots to carry out jihad, Palin said of terrorists. Oh, but you cant offend them, cant make them feel uncomfortable, not even a smidgen. Well, if I were in charge, they would know that waterboarding is how we baptize terrorists.

By Tuesday, Faithful America had already reached its goal of 15,000 signatures on a petition condemning Palin for the remarks.

This is what weve come to in America: A former candidate for vice-president can equate torture and Holy Baptism, and one of the nations most powerful political lobbies erupts into cheers and applause, Faithful America noted. As usual, Palins remarks are already making international headlines, once again portraying Christianity as a religion of hatred and violence.

The petition states: For Christians, torture is not a joke or a political punchline, but a ghastly reminder of the suffering of Jesus upon the cross. By equating it with Holy Baptism the act by which we are united with Christ in his death and resurrection Sarah Palin is blasphemously twisting our faith into a weapon of hatred and violence. No media outlet should cover her remarks without reporting on how sincere Christians of all theological and political persuasions are appalled.

My Take:

While I'm not religious, even I can see why Christians may be upset over Palin's remarks. Using Religion as a political tool is bad enough, but many Christians consider their religion to be a peaceful. Palin is acting as a moral entrepreneur, pretending to know what real Christians want and, supposedly, real Christians want to torture others. Faithful America was one of the groups that was not amused by Palin's remarks, saying that they were appalled by her use of Christianity as a weapon of hatred an violence.

Palin must make hateful, grandiose remarks to cater her to her base (the more vicious she is, the more they cheer), but she can't step too far without offending moderate, sensible people (Christian or not). She must perform a difficult balancing act in order to get her paycheck, and this balancing act is becoming increasingly tedious. Since FOX dropped her, she has intensified the inflammatory rhetoric, and I believe her vengeful, hateful words will haunt her in the future.

What bothers me is how the people they're holding are assumed guilty and possessing of the information they want, and of course Palin's acceptance of waterboarding and of torture in general by anyone in this country.

The whole affair is disgusting, no matter what stupidity Palin wants to utter about it.

Faithful America is a faith-based organization that leans left.

Whether or not they are political or not doesn't change the fact that Palin's comments were vengeful and inconsistent with international law.

Liberal Christians criticizing and denouncing Evangelical Christians is nothing new. While I'm not offended by her comment, I do think it was in poor taste and judgement.
