Robin Williams committed suicide. It was tragic and he is a great loss to our world.

    RIP Robin.

A U.S. General was killed in Afghanistan by Taliban A-Wholes.

This thread has nothing to do with Robin Williams personally. He was a celebrity. There are many of which that also died over the last few years that were more famous, nearly as famous, or just as famous as the wonderful Mr. Williams. The death of a celebrity while tragic is not a very rare event as we have many of them pass each year.

However, the death of a U.S. General in a combat/action situation is extremely rare. It's so rare that a General has not been killed in combat/action since the early 1970's. That's pretty rare indeed!

So, how did the U.S. Mainstream Media cover the two events? The General's death garnered exceedingly low attention from ABC, NBC, CBS on their nightly news broadcasts. The big print papers NY Times, LA Times, etc... also gave it little attention. CNN and MSNBC mentioned it, but there was not non-stop coverage or anything like it. Robin Williams death was like 9/11 or CNN Malaysian Airline coverage. Non-stop, leading off the news, and wall to wall.

    The Obama declaration:

We've blunted the Taliban's momentum in Afghanistan, and in 2014, our longest war will be over.

The last thing our media wants to do is focus on yet another failure in a long line of enormous international and defense failures by Barack Obama. They also don't want to focus on the latest IRS Attacks on the TEA Party revelations, the NSA spying on citizens, Fast and Furious findings, the Border failures, the Syrian failure to support the Moderates, or the Russian failures, or the ISIS slaughtering of thousands of Christians.

I give you Robin Williams... enjoy the distraction you sheep!

This is how our National "Free Press" works.

How is not leading with a general who was killed, what about a week or so ago, and going with Robin Williams' death, yesterday, have anything to do with killing of the free press? One would think that a "Free Press" should be able to report what news they wish and until I see some kind of docket from a branch of government showing that they couldn't talk about the general and had to report on Williams' death I will just file this thread under partisan bull(*)(*)(*)(*). Trying to make a mountain out of a molehill.

I would venture to say that more people were affected by Williams' death than the General's.

You have to blame the "Keeping Up With the Kardashians" mentality demographic, who are, I assure you, overwhelmingly Obama voters.

We are ALL affected by the General's death in significant ways as Americans. Our security, our sacrifice in Afghanistan, the motivation of our armed forces, etc....

The General's death was a far far far far far more rare occurrence than that of a famous celebrity.

The difference in coverage tells us where the National "Free Press" wants our national focus to be and where it does not want it to be.

    - - - Updated - - -

    I won't argue that.

But, when we look at straight up "News" events, the death of a General is far more newsworthy and attention worthy that the death of a celebrity.

Unless of course it's Elvis, because when he finally dies that will be crazy.

I said nothing in my response about rarity. Yes he is the first general killed in service since Vietnam and celebrities die much more frequently, I was just saying that Williams' death probably had more of an affect on peoples lives than the general's. I honestly do not feel any more or less safe than I did before the death of General Greene. I'm fairly certain he wasn't the linchpin to our armed forces morale or effectiveness, and the fact that last night he wasn't who was talked about will not bring the downfall of the American Empire.

Politicizing Robin Williams death is shameful.

There are some thing that should not be politicized and used as a trash and bash article.

And it still has not been proven that his death was a suicide.

This is a bunch of crap.

Once upon a time, we had a media which was skeptical of government and challenged government. Now we have a media which is an arm of government. They have actually chosen to be on the side of government. Instead of questioning government, they openly demand then justify the increasing of government power.

Robin Williams, Elvis, Whitney Houston, John Belushi, Marilyn Monroe, et al, their tragic lives are to be pitied but the press gives too much coverage to their untimely deaths. The question is why? Because members of the press are infatuated with actors, artists, authors, and the powerful and rich.

Not comprehending the thread and commenting is even more shameful.

This has nothing to do with his death, but the death of a celebrity, any celebrity finding vastly more coverage than the death of a U.S. General in a combat situation.

I made it really clear it was not about Robin Williams, but about distraction.

It sucks that I even had to deal with a Liberal that did not get it. Your post is complete crap.

I'm just thinking out loud, here, but isn't it a shame that most people tweet about Robin Williams' death, but look the other way when they are informed of a general's death or thousands of people being slaughtered in Iraq? Do you see anything wrong with that, sir? Where the tweets for those poor, innocent children begging for their lives? I'm not saying we shouldn't publicize his death; he was a celebrity and made many people laugh, including myself. However, there comes a time when we need to focus on the bigger picture. What say you?

I don't care about last night per se, I care about last week's coverage vs. this weeks coverage. Both were an isolated event of a death of an important figure. One was far far far more rare. Both will effect millions of Americans. The less rare event was given a tidal wave of more attention. That was the point. I don't expect to hear anything about the General this week, I bet we hear more about Robin next week.

    No it isn't.

You should have not used Robin Williams at all.

Your shaming me for shaming the shameful shamers is what's even more shameful

You would be wrong there, aside from making you a little sad and having to watch a different movie, I don't see how Robin William's death effects anything. A general has a lot more impact and importance than a movie actor. OP is just frustrated that so many people don't understand this.

The trend of celebrity worship has exploded over the last 30 years or so to a truly obnoxious degree, and IME parallels the devaluation of basic education and sense of community in this country. People from even my grandparents' generation would be puzzled by the celebrity metaculture we have, that people would actually spend time caring about, reading about, learning about, talking about the lives of actors, singers, dancers as if they were some form of aristocracy in anything other than a very superficial way. At least athletes DO SOMETHING in some directly competitive way. That People Magazine has 45+ million readers is mind-blowing to me. Admittedly, this includes lots of medical offices, but still. Those readers and their demographics are the problem in this country. Without their malleable ignorance polluting the polls, we could likely accomplish meaningful change in this country.

Probably because he was in fact a general in the military...it's kind of par for the course, wouldn't you say? Even if your factoid is correct, it is generally assumed that anyone, regardless of rank, could be killed, especially in a combat zone.

So other than the fact that a US General was killed, one that I never heard of prior to this, what sort of response are you expecting? Or why should it overshadow Robin William's death, who many people do know, and who have been touched by his work. It is a false comparison, and one in which you have failed to explain why attention needs to be diverted? It seems to me this is another one of those threads setup for more warhawking blather. Am I right?

    Then please explain.

BTW, I find it funny for all the concern regarding this "general", that the OP never even bothered to mention his name within the first post.

Let me clarify first, you want me to explain to you why a general is more important than a Hollywood actor?

You never answered his question. Instead you asked another question.... that is dirty.

I linked to a complete link on General Greene... I assumed all informed people knew his name.

I wonder if Liberals consider General Greene's death "workplace violence"?

There is supposed to be per the U.S. Constitution. Instead we have a propaganda arm for a political party paid for by tax payer dollars (See Broadcast Networks).

I can understand why Tram Law is upset about the thread but then there is also no way to point this out without mentioning Robin Williams. Now Lucifer is trolling and trying to pour fuel on the fire, I'm not taking the bait, see you guys in another thread.

So apparently this is another one of those threads for fake patriotism and political posturing.
