Seems that comment didn't go over so well to the Defense of Christians crowd.

Did the crowd really feel that Cruz tried to hijack the conference for his own purpose and were therefore upset, OR are Christians finally becoming fed up with Israel?

I think the latter based on the timing of the remark and the crowd turning hostile. You be the judge.

Cruz's parting remark was "I will say this: If you will not stand with Israel and the Jews, then I will not stand with you. Thank you, and God bless you," he said, before walking off the stage." Does that mean that Cruz has decided to not stand with Christians? Do we know who the Cuba via Canada presidential candidate (U.S.) will be standing with tomorrow?

There is a fair amount of antisemitism in American Christianity.

    I don't understand it, either.

I thought he was speaking to a group of ME Christians, not Americans.

    Cruz did it on purpose.

The speech was intended for AIPAC, not "Defense of Christians"....to try to woo the Likud Lobby group to support him in 2016.

BTW, as always if you disagree with Netanyahu...or the Likud Party...or even Likud sycophants like Cruz.....you'll get called an "anti-Semite" by the Right.

I'm thinking even some Israeli Jews who oppose Likud would probably be called "anti-Semitic" by them. :)

It's really pretty easy to understand. Too much 'semitic' influence, particularly when it comes to warring on Arab states in the vicinity of Israel.

I thought it was a group of American Christians who are concerned about the plight of Christians in the ME.

"Self-loathing" at the very least. Those AIPAC/Likud people have just gotten used to bullying their way around America.

There really IS a fair amount of anti-Semitism in American Christianity. It wasn't that long ago that the Jews were the Christian KKK's #2 target, followed by the Papists at #3. It seems that some of the evangelical and fundamentalist Christian groups support the hell out of the 'semites' now, particularly in Texas.

To address his actual statement, how exactly is Israel the greatest ally to Christians?

This is kind of interesting, because up until now I thought American Christians, especially evangelicals, tend to be pro-Israel because of the whole Armageddon wet dream they share. The question is, were they just pissed off at Cruz (and who can blame them) and his canned speech, or is it reflective of a change they want in US policy towards Israel?

I've never heard an answer to that other than "Israel is the only democracy in the Middle East" which is patently untrue. Israel has never fought along side us, never allowed us to station fighting forces there, has spied on us, has given our very top secret military tech to the Chinese and N. Koreans (radars and guidance systems), and agents in the U.S. gave our atomic and hydrogen bomb secrets to the Israelis and Russkies during the early cold war. Ariel Sharon has stated "we own the U.S." After a while, a guy has to think Syria is a better ally.

It's kinda funny, Eisenhower, Kennedy, Johnson and Nixon were all suspicious of the Israelis and their American networks. Somewhere along the line, the campaign money and influence got too big. I think it was about the time of the Reagan election.

As an Atheist, there are several problems I have with Israel:

-Her refusal to sign the Chemical Weapons Resolution
-Her refusal to sign the NPT, which has alot of ironies: 1) Iran is a signatory of the treaty, 2) Israel has long tried to goad us into a war theater in the ME
-The Lavon Affair, the USS Liberty and her perchance for spying on the US
-AIPAC's undemocratic influence in the US

Need I go on? Israel is a Jewish theocracy, far from a US ally it's merely a Saudi Arabia clone. Our real allies have always been the Western Powers.

I think it's turning into a desire for a policy change. Even the evangelicals are feeling chumped.

Not to pick nit, but I think the old Bolshies who have settled in Israel (and the US) are using the Jewish faith. They aren't Jewish except for convenience. Of, course, the rabbis are getting something out of the deal, too.

Neither are the Shinto in Japan. Why isn't Japan the greatest ally Christians have?

Japan would be a rather odd ally of Christianity. They are a Far Eastern nation that shares neither a cultural link to the lands of the Bible, nor do they follow Christianity in any great number of believers (participation is only around 2%). But at least they aren't hunting Christians.

As far as Israel goes, the situation tends to explain itself. There are groups in the middle east who hunt Christians. Israel is not one of these groups, and tends to find itself in opposition to such groups. Therefore, Israel makes a natural ally.

Can you name a single thing Israel has down to help Christians that wasn't self-serving?

Christians in Israel have the legal freedom to practice their religion.

That is true of about 100 countries around the world. Why is Israel any better than them?
