Funny quote, as none of the current wave of illegals will ever see it. Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty are not anywhere near Mexico and our Southern border. That quote, if aimed at anyone , is aimed at legal immigrants who used to come in that way. Not the "brown lettuce pickers" who (*)(*)(*)(*) on our laws and skitter over, and under the border fences.

 

Indeed. I always laugh when that Emma Lazarus poem is invoked in the context of illegal immigration at our Southern border.
Nobody jumped off the ships that brought immigrants to Ellis Island for screening and processing and swam ashore illegally knowing that Uncle Scam
would make their children citizens, pay for their education, medication, food, college tuition, etc. AND work full time to legalize their presence here despite blatantly peeing all over our laws.

I live in Mexico. I know many Mexican people. They are my neighbors and my friends. We speak about this often. No one that I know here knows anyone who has left for the US for any reason other than making more money there than they can here. And when the construction jobs in particular started opening back up here, many Mexicans came back to Mexico because they could make more money HERE than they could there. AND... the health care is worlds better here than there as well.

wasn't in congress. Go figure. Do I really give a flying fig about a 26 year old woman 'civilian' who gushes at a private event over a politician??

Ironically you are talking to Mexicans in Mexico
and using them as examples of people who would not move to the US when there are literally hundreds of thousands of Mexicans who already have.

As long as the lure of free money and services exists as an option for at least some of these illegals it's absurd to claim it's not an inducement.
When the Mexican social safety net (if there is one at all) matches the American model let me know. Until then your anecdotal evidence doesn't really convince.

convincing you of anything is nowhere near my bucket list. I know Mexicans who have gone to the US and I know those who have gone and come back. Economics and employment potential always drive the problem.... not some pie in the sky dream of a social safety net.

The only 'sense of urgency' I get from Ms. Paltrow is to 'consciously decouple' my TV from the station she's appearing on.
