Name one good thing religion has accomplished

For one thing, Islam brought the Arabs out of their state of jahiliyya. They went from tribes in perennial warfare to founding the greatest civilizations this world has ever witnessed.

 

Uhmmm...maybe, maybe not. We don't really have good records on how contented most of the peasants were or weren't and the evidence can be contradictory. However, the indications from feudal polities that we do have good records for show far more revolt than we seem to think was common. Up in the thousands in Tokugawa Japan and several hundreds in Tsarist Russia in just the 19th century.

The Romans had about the same gap or greater as existed in medieval times, but they used Bread and Circuses, not God and Fear, and it may have worked a lot better.

Religion helped take money from Really Stupid people (TV evangelists, church collection plates , believing contributing 10% of your income to the church gets you into heaven , etc.)

Religion...… has proven to all of us...… that we can take good information and twist around in such a way that it justifies our worst behavior and thought patterns.

many will speak concerning what man can see. But what about what man can't see. It ISN'T about religion, because MANY don't teach ALL TRUTH. Also “religions” were made up by imperfect humans. What we should focus on is the good that came from the Creator of our universe. First!, he ,(Jehovah God Exo. 6:3), sent his son to teach us about his Father's words. So that we might gain the truth and live ,(John 12:49,50 For I have not spoken of myself; but the Father which sent me, he gave me a commandment, what I should say, and what I should speak. And I know that his commandment is life everlasting: whatsoever I speak therefore, even as the Father said unto me, so I speak). He also sent him to die so that we may live ,(John 3:16,17).

ALL governments promise peace among mankind, haven happen yet, and WON'T happen. Yet Jehovah God and Jesus tell us, soon they would rid the world ,(as they did before), of ANY who causes sadness. Satan and his weak-butt followers, who's attacking MANY ,(Rev.12:12 Therefore rejoice, ye heavens, and ye that dwell in them. Woe to the inhabiters of the earth and of the sea! for the devil is come down unto you, having great wrath, because he knoweth that he hath but a short time). And humans who chose to live a life of sin and debauchery,(Luke 17:26-30). false religion has ALWAYS told their followers to fight for their country. Jesus nor Jehovah God NEVER dictated that action. Because they knew this world ,(as it is), belongs to satan.... for now!

For those who truly follow Jesus, (Luke 9:23), staying out of the world ,(John 17:16 They are not of the world, even as I am not of the world), And doing his Father's WILL ,(Matt. 7:21). They don't focus on the negative things of satans world, but on the world in which to come ,(Matt. 6:10 Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven). A new government that'll be better than this one ,(Dan. 2:44 And in the days of these kings shall the God of heaven set up a kingdom, which shall never be destroyed: and the kingdom shall not be left to other people, but it shall break in pieces and consume all these kingdoms, and it shall stand for ever). ONLY then will true peace come about. peace

 

If you are looking for universal accomplishments there are none... but if you are looking for limited accomplishments there are many. For example The Salvation Army and its tireless work to help the downtrodden.

 

Religion got rid of Pagan worship, temples, priests, and prayer books,... including the removal of al the Myths.

Myths were detailed descriptions about the 12 major godheads.
They described how all these gods were related to one another.

Today, religion means YHVH, or the concept of Judaism in some way described in the holy books of the Jews.

 

You forget that Religion today expects the return of the great teacher who has everyone well aware of the Bible promises for an End Times and an explanation of what the scriptures mean.

Christians call him Jesus, the Jews say messiah, and the muslims called his name Mahdi.
That day will see this great classroom set up and awaiting that teacher.

Right now Muslims have about the WORST civilizations on the entire planet, so clearly Allah is a failure, or at least he's a liar who actually hates Muslims. Belief in a false imminent "end times" on earth keeps people from protecting our planet properly ("why protect it when it's all going to disappear after Jesus returns?")......yet another way that religion is destroying our lives/planet.

Let me correct that for you: those who never lost touch with reality can't truly understand those that have lost touch with reality.

 

I too used to believe in a magic man, who brought presents, but then I turned 5 years old and started to learn how the world really works.

as in all human endeavors religion is flawed. there is no proof that the institution of religion would have prevented any of the human advances we see today. I could start a thread prove that it is just a likely that they would have thrived even more. For every book written for religion how many were banned by religion? For every artist contracted by religion how many were banned? For every scientist (see today's debate on evolution) how many et cetera? 3000 gods followed in this world today and your's is the one truth? How is that helping man move foreword. What if we just used common sense and scientific method to come to conclusion instead of stone throwing and crucifixion? It is the secular man that has moved us foreword in every sense, attaching a deity to success or failure is lazy and irresponsible.

 

I kind of agree, except there is a group Evangelicals that I heard of that actually believes in ecological responsibility. Their reasoning is that since the planet is God's creation, it must be respected. As archaic as their creationism thinking might be, at least they will be one less group trashing the place....
