Last week the wife and I went and voted in an area not far from our home, and that seemed like pleasure. This week I attended jury duty summons and driving to the heart of this huge city of ours, finding the location nestled in the heart of one way only streets before the sun had risen over the horizon, finding an overpriced parking spot, finding the location itself on foot, half stripping for items scanning, and then sitting for the next three hours only to have everyone dismissed without explanation seemed like punishment for having voted, for being a citizen at all.

Once upon a time I was able to talk myself out of thinking along such lines. But now as I sprint towards age sixty, it really does seem like I am being punished for having the audacity for having voted. At least it's looking good for the people I voted for, however. At least I won't have officially wasted my time there as well.

It's really something when you have to stop and wonder what benefits one actually gets from citizenship when it seems that illegals enjoy exactly the same benefits on the whole. I am certain that I am missing the point. I KNOW that I am missing the point. It's just that the older I get the less I care. So . . . meh . . . sorry, but I got nothin'.

Discuss one of the following topics

Charm what is it, who has it, how does one acquire it and what is its longterm practical impact on the life of the charming and the uncharming.

Is color important to you? Does the color of the rooms you sit in or the clothes you wear, alter your mood, Do you like black and white movies and art, as well as you like paintings and movies in color. Would it bother you immensely if you lost your ability to discern and see color?

Describe that last two fistfights/ brawls you were in, what caused them, did you win? what gratification did you get from participating and do you regret not walking away.

Have you ever felt hatred towards another? How did you express it? Does hatred serve a valuable purpose?

That is the best I have right now.

I'll accept that challenge! Charm is when a charismatic person knows all the correct buttons to push and when to push them. While being good looking helps in reality attitude is everything. You can be fugly looking and still possess a devastating amount of charm with the correct attitude. Sometimes I can be charming as hell . . . even though I am not a particularly handsome man.

As coincidence has it I took up painting some time ago and now I am a moderately accomplished painter of landscapes; usually oils on canvas, and I consider color to be a big pain in the rump. I spent most of my life, you see, as a pencil and charcoal on paper sketch artist and I've done some web cartooning. I'm great at dealing with black and white on paper, but give me a palette with a range of colors and mentally I go "Urkl!" But lately my work has been looking damn good, and so I am gradually getting the hang of dealing with color on canvases. Who knows but that some day I might even enjoy dealing with it.

Both of them occurred when I was in my thirties working alone at night as an unarmed watchman in one of the most dangerous parts of a huge city. Both of them dealt with derelicts looking to burgle the place I was patrolling on foot. Neither of them amounted to much. I approached a warehouse that should have been empty of inhabitants and after I unlocked and pulled a door open beneath an overhead light a shape rushed at me from the interior darkness of the space. I recall noting that he had something in his hand that was coming at my chest. I'd been training in martial arts for years by that time and so I instinctively pivoted in place and he missed me with whatever it was, and he ran past me in one direction while I tried to return my heartbeat to normal. Once I had my adrenaline surge shakes under control I found the area around back where he had pried apart some tin siding to enter the warehouse.

The other time was also at night but this time it was during a misting rain. Again I was outside and was walking up a concrete ramp to a loading dock and approaching a warehouse door. The overhead lighting was minimal but there was enough to see by and so I didn't have my heavy duty security-baton style light turned on. But I was holding it in my right hand. I was almost up to the door when I realized that the bundle of rags beside it was not the same bundle of nameless trash that was there the previous night when the bundle surged to its feet and swung a the business end of a broken bottle at me. I blocked the thrust with the flashlight and then punched the side of his face with my left fist hard enough to spin him around; whereupon he staggered off the side of the loading dock with a cry or grunt of dismay and then vanished into the wet night while I stared after his departure in shock and then checked myself over to see if he'd gotten me without my noticing. I was fine, but for the rest of the shift I jumped at every noise I heard.

In both instances I was gratified to have gotten off without any physical harm and was relieved to discover that martial arts training more or less works as advertised most of the time; but I was also quite aware that I still could have been seriously hurt either time. On the other hand I did learn from these events and became better at watching out for myself as time went on.

In my teens I hated bullies with a passion because I was a short and slender fellow in those years, and therefore I was a target. So I compensated for being a target by being the craziest son-of-a-gun imaginable if pushed around. I wanted the bastards to know that I was very likely to try and sink my teeth into their throat. But that was a very long time ago and as I aged I took up martial arts and then did a great deal of weight training and learned to chill. So, no, I can't recall the last time that hatred was a factor in my personal existence. But during my teen years it definitely served the purpose of inspiring me to be as tough as I needed to be to survive growing up as a shorter and more slender than normal male. Aside from that, however, I think that hatred is useless.

    So . . . how'd I do?

I don't know man, but for a couple of decades there was a sign right there on US 54 that looked just like I posted. When you drove over the hill all you could see at first was the capital letters. It only came down when they turned that section into freeway.

Yet oddly enough Der Wustenfuchs hasn't been banned. Can't decide if that's good or bad.
