Pacifistic? The Senate is not filibuster proof. Republican Senators either A) have to work with Democrats or B) finish what the Democrats started and abolish the filibuster. Option B screws the minority party, and no one can be so naive as to think the Senate won't switch parties again in the future. I don't feel warm and fuzzy reaching out the olive branch. You confuse me with a liberal, and besmirch your own reputation by doing so. I reach out the olive branch because that's what politics is, or at least it is supposed to be. In addition to the Senate rules, and however distasteful it is, any bill has to be signed off by Obama. If he says "no" then Congress has to put together a 2/3rd coalition to override, and there's no nuclear option for that. We've seen what happens when the majority party shoves bad legislation down the minority party's throat. You're not going to break the Democrats politically, that's a pipe dream. You can hurt them this election year or the next, but they'll learn, they'll regroup, they'll take another tack. You want to try shoving legislation down their throat, they'll use it as fuel just like Republicans did against Democrats. 2016 is not that far away, and I'd rather not have the Republicans (*)(*)(*)(*) the 2016 Presidency away as you seem keen to do. 2016 WILL be judged by what Congress does in the next 2 years. - - - Updated - - - Yep, that was my point.
What happens now is very important. Amnesty didn't work in the Republicans favor and much more importantly conservatives favor when Reagan did it and doing the same thing but expecting different results is the definition of insanity. If Republicans help move forward the Obama agenda and run someone like McAmnesty or Romney in 2016 this victory will be squandered and will only help move forward the liberal agenda.
Every government screws over some part of their populace. Its simply unavoidable unless all the people are automatons who have the exact same thoughts. I fail to see you point.
Welfare goes up. More and more help for the poor. Obama rich friends get richer. This is the middle class striking back.
Right, I can't imagine a single reason why Republicans would not grant amnesty to tens of millions of illegal aliens who have children who are 75% likely to vote Democrat. How does it feel slicing your own throat?
if the republicans go the amnesty route its all over. they can do immigration reform and make it really hard to get in though. they need to get the boarders under control ASAP and start deporting.
Just for kicks, I'm watching MSNBC - and it's amazing how they're focusing on ONLY the tight races and the ones the Dems are winning at least as of now. They're really drinking the Kool-Aid over there.
Well I'm a Democrat-aligned Brit, but I'd like to congratulate Republicans tonight. They played their respective campaigns well and tapped into a valid public distrust and dissatisfaction with the status quo. We must never forget that whatever the result, the true winner is democracy. I do wish GOPers had been so humble when Obama won the presidency in 08 and 12 though... In truth, this is only a short lived victory. The reality will still be gridlock. Obama will not sign any legislation that undermines his agenda and Republicans will not have the votes to avoid filibusters or override the president. I think if anything, the public will be more likely to vote for the Democratic 2016 presidential candidate to avoid the prospect of Repub control... but given the number of GOP senate seats up for election in 2016 tonight's result is likely to only be a temporary victory. I believe that a Hillary sweep in 2016 will bring about a Dem House, Senate and WH.
Yes it will, and the country will continue seeing Republicans as the "Democrat light" party, and switch right back. Good luck with that whole amnesty thing. It worked out great last time.
LOL....Hillary is a disaster for dems. She couldnt even handle a cabinet position under this administration.
Pretty awesome night. Still 3 states to go: Louisiana, Alaska and Virginia. I'm hoping for at least 1 out of 3
They can suspend the rules and go back to a 51 vote passes in the Senate if need be. Reid used the nuclear option as it is referred to get political appointments cleared. Hillary will not run. On the off chance she does, she won't even get the nomination. This does probably mean that the House will flip back to the democrats in 2016, but not likely the Senate or WH.
As time goes on, Republicans accept and adopt more and more liberal ideas. They believe that if they act more like liberal Democrats, voters who would normally vote liberal Democrat will suddenly start supporting them. It's insanity.
