Now we're not trying to minimize slavery, but we had nothing to do with it. In fact our ancestors, several, fought to end it. Great-great-great-grandparents lost a son to the war. Slavery is obviously counter to the Declaration of Independence, etc, but they had to deal with the reality that actually existed at the time, not some utopia that did not.

The boxer Muhammad Ali, upon returning from a prize match in Zaire, was asked, "What did you think of Africa," and he replied, "I'm sure glad my granddaddy got on that boat!"

In your case, we're not so sure. You'd probably prefer that you lived in Africa where they don't have good roads or sanitation and carry jugs of water home on their heads to cook with. No internet or iphones. Episodes of ebola run rampant through there and kills thousands and thousands of people, due to the lack of facilities and medical supplies and know-how. We guess our question would be, what's stopping you?

Have you actually ever been to a city in Africa? There are internet cafes in Africa and people have internet in their homes. There are iphones galore. There are shopping centers, modern housing complexes and there is investment in infrastructure. There are nice restaurants, museums, posh hotels, beaches and resorts. I don't think I ever saw anyone carrying water on their head in the city (not that there is anything wrong with it). People have nice houses and cars, stoves, refrigerators and air conditioning. I've seen it firsthand. Now, there are plenty of poor people, as well as middle and upper classes, but you seem to have a very warped view from watching episodes of Tarzan and very little real knowledge about the availability of modern amenities in African countries.

 

Sure maybe if you only go to tourist places.

We looked at Google Street Views for a few cities in sub-Saharan West Africa, where the slaves were taken from to be sold in America in the late 18th / early 19th centuries, and we gave an accurate description of what's there. We have no problem believing that there are modern cities in Africa. But not where the descendants of American slaves would be living.

If it's so modern as you say, why is the death toll from Ebola so appallingly high there? Ebola seems no match for modern medicine, given its failure to spread in western countries.

 

It's the capital of that crap country.
They do have good roads in a lot of places.
They do have sanitation in a lot of places.
They do not have to carry jugs on that entire continent.
They have access to the internet.

It should go without saying that everybody would pick that sh*t capital over the slums of Detroit.
