Yanukovich backed out of the agreement when he realized that the trade with Russia wasn't only the few billions that the EU presented, but a hundred times more than that. When he asked the EU to cover the losses, they said no.

Yanukovich ran to every nation in the world asking for fifteen billion which Ukraine needed desperately and he was refused...even by China. Putin was the only one willing to forward the money...to the chagrin of the Russian people who were tired of supporting Ukraine. The debt of Ukraine to Russia for the previous four years alone was thirty four billion.

The Ukrainians also believed that they would be free to enter and work in the EU, but the EU was swarmed with Poles, and did not want anymore Eastern Europeans. Add to this the austerity and doubling of gas prices, and the lowering of pensions and you can see why Yanukovich backed down.
