this was the issue that needed addressed

"Netflix Responds to Comcast: It’s ‘Extortion’ to Demand Payment for Delivering Video"

    http://www.usatoday.com/story/money/business/2014/02/23/netflix-comcast-deal-streaming/5757631/

"Netflix downloads would result in a faster streaming experience for Comcast customers than before, Netflix receives no preferential network treatment under the agreement."

they got no preferential network treatment under the agreement, they just don't get slowed down artificially - talk about money for nothing comcast

glad Net Neutrality passed to prevent this nonsense

I have to laugh because I can't wait to rub it into my friend's face who dropped cable and signed up for 2 years of ATT specifically for this reason. I tried to warn him and now he is stuck in a contract. :roflol:

If we're going to allow state monopolies over transport infrastructure, tolls make sense. In the modern age they wouldn't be that difficult to implement.

Pure fail and fear mongering. Is your Netflix feed hampered?

I like that, so ok it's happened already, but was it happening to you?

.... No, but it was to those customers, could be to others without net neutrality

I have never been mugged before either, but glad to have laws against it....

What a load. You have really no idea what has happened or what is going on or any idea what the original issue was or how it was resolved but rely on the Administration's fear mongering as your guide.

instead of fear monger and telling us how evil this administration is, you could tell us what the right told you to believe so we know where your coming from as we did not get the memo

    No problem.
From my cloud here are PT files and a link for the PT app. Download the PT app and install, then open the Final PT and check the configs. User name for routers is 'admin' and password is 'cisco'.

You tire because your lack of knowledge frustrates you.

I didn't say that they will never be able to tell. I asked you if you know what to will take and are you willing to pay the costs added to do it. Also, how does the FCC get around the privacy issues involved in monitoring data? You also keep saying 'client sides' and 'server sides' while ignoring the vast middle where data can be manipulated.

LOL! This is what I mean by 'lack of knowledge' on this issue. Did you know that this was an 'EQUIPMENT ISSUE"? That Netflix was upset because Comcast did not have the requisite EQUIPMENT to ensure the download speeds needed given the increase in content flow?? So guess what that means?? More $$$ per month from subscribers like you and I to get the equipment needed to make sure the data flow is accommodated equally. Are you getting it yet? :wall::wall::wall:

Wrong! Netflix was trying to extort Comcast by saying they HAD to buy more and newer equipment to accommodate THEM. Guess what? Netflix had to pay if they wanted the equipment, not Comcast. Tell Netflix to open up their own ISP if they don't like it. Friggin mooches.

And Netflix tried to mug Comcast. Screw 'em.

    - - - Updated - - -

You want the left to let the govt peep into your data flow? LOL!

For all of you that want to make this about Netflix, you can rip many movies for free via YouTube. If you want newer movies, get a torrent app like BitTorrent and go to Pirate Bay.

The FCC routinely announces changes before issuing finalized regulation. Your Thorazine is awaiting you.

Netflix has agreements with L3 and the like already. They and others (myself included) have proven that last mile providers are the ones throttling traffic that prefers their own services.

Uh no. Comcast was purposely throttling Netflix by not updating their equipment to be able to handle what their customers were requesting even though their customer were paying for specific bandwidth (broadband) service. Comcast was screwing both their customers and Netflix all while at the same time promoting their service which competed with Netflix.

The government has had the ability to peep into your data flow since the early 90's.

All networks employ traffic shaping techniques in order to provide quality of service. Almost every hop in every network can identify traffic types at the packet level and every packet has some kind of identifier signalling the type of traffic encapsulated in the packet. The core is made of routers that look at flows of traffic based upon metrics designed to minimize delays and insure resiliency along the best paths available. This is all done dynamically or through complex routing and layer two standards such as MPLS, OSPF and so on. The FCC will not mandate which traffic gets priority but it will demand that all connections treat all sources of traffic equally. Many of the large carriers have bought up content which gives them an incentive to get you to watch that content over others. If they design the traffic flows to punish other sources of traffic in favor of their own content then they are violating one of the tenets of an open network. Verizon challenged the FCC over this issue and won because the FCC at that time classified data differently due to a horrible decision by the Bush FCC Chair which favored the big carriers. Because of this action, the FCC did not have the legal right to enforce net nuetrality. This just changed. All that happened was that the internet is now legally forced to abide by the de facto rules that ran the internet prior to the Verizon case. The idea that this will stop innovation is absurd. It levels the playing field for any and all content providers and forces the network to be content nuetral. All the right wing baloney is based upon the interests of a few mega-carriers who want to give their own content priority over all other content. Why? Because they make more money when they get you to watch their content. That is the essence of this ruling.

    How do you enforce it?

Bull. Throttling is tweaking the traffic via configs. Equipment does not throttle anything. It is what it is. Netflix had to pay meaning they were wrong.

Then we don't need NN if your precious govt entity is already peeping at you.

wrong, netflix was just asking to not be slowed down artificially, them paying Comcast got them no fast line or preferred services

their customers already paid for the download speeds, Comcast wanted to double dip and charge netflix too, be like charging both ends of a phone conversation

total bs, the minute they paid, the speed was restored, it was artificial not real, if they could not handle the speed, then they should not of sold that speed to their customers

if I buy 100\10 services, I expect to download at close to 100 if the service like netflix supports it (netflix doesn't even support a 1\4 of that speed in real world, so why should I be slowed down by my ISP when I paid to have more then 4x that download speed.... ?

keep spinning, same why cops get around it, if a rape victim says they were raped, they ask the victim for a rape kit, doesn't mean cops can collect rape kits on demand, but when they have vicitms, they usually do the rape kits voluntarily.... see how that works, when a ISP rapes it's customers, some customers will allow their internet connection to be inspected

we already provided links where volunteers are even crowd-sourcing this information for the FCC, and I am sure netflix is willing to assist as well

so now you admit it's possible to do, they what is the issue?

    Metrics.

Manure. All network equipment has the capacity to throttle pretty much everything. Netflix paid because their customers were complaining. You and Verizon are wrong.

Speak for yourself, you're paranoia is about 20 years late to the dance. I pay for a specific service of a certain level of bandwidth from Verizon, there is no contractual limitation on what that is applicable to. If I subscribe to Netflix or Amazon or SEN it doesn't matter, I am the subscriber and Verizon is obligated to provide the service I pay them to provide.

Explain what metrics and how it is monitored.

Manure is what you're shoveling. Netflix paid because it was an equipment upgrade issue. Not because a Comcast admin was throttling the traffic.

I have no paranoia but many of you NN freaks have an overabundance of ignorance. And everyone has a contract pal. We're talking about enforcement. Blurting out 'metrics' without defining it is weak and typical of the ignorant who know nothing about this. Take a number.

You don't have to log onto anything. You click and download pal.

You couldn't do my job pretender. Sit back, be quiet and learn something. I've done more troubleshooting the last 5 days than you'll do in your life. You're dismissed.
